Jetta Base model v Civic base model

FAW-Volkswagen is the joint venture between VW Germany and First Automobile Group of China to produce VW vehicles in China. Its lineup includes the Jetta. Question is, if FAW-VW still produces the Jetta, why didn't VW Philippines just import that instead of phasing it out here?

The PH Market Jetta TDI is not available in China. The nearest model to our PH Jetta is the Sagitar, which has a gas engine.

The Jetta Sportline that you were referring to is a different car from our local Jetta, it also has a gas engine. The Chinese Jetta is based on the MK4 Seat Toledo, compared to the PH Jetta that was based from the Golf MK6.

It also explains why the GOLF GTS Sportwagon will also be replaced by a Chinese made Santana GTS. The GOLF Sportwagon TDI is not available in China.

No question on the capabilities of the Focus Ecoboost but sadly, the unreliability of the DCT model has impacted the sales of this 6AT model.

That's good that you are getting 7+ km/L per liter which is decent for an engine of that output. My friend who owns the hatchback model is only getting between 6-7 km/L on Sucat-MOA traffic.

Medyo mababa talaga road clearance ng Ford cars (Fiesta, Focus). Sayad yung chin minsan sa mga humps or inclined parking.

For 1.08M, you can get the base model hatchback or sedan and you can get one quick car despite being heavy for a compact. Actual 0-100 kmh as per most reviews is just above 8 seconds which is about the same as the Mazda3 2.0L and other midsize cars (Accord 2.4L, Mazda6 2.5L).

6-7km/L seems about right for heavy traffic.

True, may stigma na ngayon yung Focus na unreliable daw ang transmission.
Even old Focus owners thought that this is still DCT.
Dami din nagtatanong sa akin bakit Focus daw pinili ko eh madaming issues daw sa transmission. Sabi ko updated na, balik na sila sa reliable torque converter.

The sales rep said I was the first one who bought a Focus in our city. Around 6 months may dalawa na akong nakita. I’d like to think I was able to influence them when they saw me roaming around.

Sobrang sama ng perception ng Focus. My friend bought his Focus in 2013 for 1M. Sold it in 2017 for 320k. Less than 1/3 of bnew in just 4 years!

But it was rightfully deserved - his DCT had issues requiring the car to be in the dealership for several weeks at a time. When he needed replacement for suspension parts, it would also take weeks to arrive.

The Focus has a great engine and a great drive. I doubt though if many people will see that as enough reason to buy one.

You are correct, parts will be a pain. But with the right connections, OEM parts are quite easy to find. It also helps that we have a good relationship with the Ford casa here.

I think the Focus leans towards the enthusiast side. Similar to the Mazda3. It prioritizes driving dynamics over practicality.

That's the point. The Civic, Jetta, and especially the Mazda 3 are all great handling cars with none of the negative perceptions of the Focus.

So as a buyer - why will I get a Focus when a 3/Civic/Jetta drives just as well without being a headache?

This is not a hypothetical scenario - all 3 of these cars sell far better than the Focus. So the buying market really doesn't see any reason to buy the Focus over those cars. There are outliers here and there (like you) but in general, there's no interest in the Focus.

^^^ I would gladly trade my Fiesta Ecoboost with a Focus Ecoboost if a situation presents itself. I will welcome the additional grunt of that 1.5L turbo engine. Puwede rin Civic 1.5L Turbo or Mazda3 2.0L.

As long as China is manufacturing the platform, parts will be available. Since the Jetta is still being sold there by the numbers, the local dealer (Ayala Automotive) will have adequate supply of parts for it.

As the other guy said, the extra grunt of the turbo helps and it is addictive as hell. All the car you mentioned cannot even come close in matching the Focus in terms of performance. The only car that can beat it is the Civic RS which now is around P1.4M? But that’s a TOTL model. Kind of unfair to compare it.

I bought the focus with the mindset that its such a bargain for P1.088M excluding discounts. We’re talking about base models here, and the Focus feels like one of the most complete packages out there. Leather thrones, torque vectoring, and a turbo charged engine.

It ain’t a headache, but that’s the stigma though. The DCT affected people’s perception. But with a little research the car in reality is quite reliable, its one of the highest selling cars in the world according to some reports. Dito lang sa pinas takot ang mga tao sa American cars. But then again, Japanese cars have always been generally more reliable in the past and easier to fix. I guess it really does depend in what you priorites are and what you grew up with.
