guys, haven't posted in the longest while. need some advise.

i wanted to replace the filter on the aircon, but only reached this stage (see pic by diesoline) i can pull the fillter partway out but it gets blocked by the plastic molding.

i don't want to shell out P700 for labor again to wheels just to put the damn filter in, so what's the next step? am i supposed to take something else off?

leo, let mang mario have a go at it. painless. just don't look at the disassembled lower (the tan portion) part of the dashboard. the usual charge for cleaning is "pang-yosi" -- whatever that means. the filter can be cleaned several times before replacing. i will have my microfilter replaced soon -- after four cleaning cycles.

    hi guys ...

need your help. Lately i have been experiencing massive turbo lag and i dont know what seems wrong. Here is what i have been experiencing:

    - lack pulling power (shifting from 2nd to 3rd)
    - turbo lag experience around 1250-1750 RPM. Previously i don't experience this or at least not so much noticeable
    - medyo smoke belching actually parang may barado tapos may biglang black smoke before the turbo start kicking. Once turbo is engaged ok na yung pulling power. I can still reach 120km/h smoothly
    - pulling power 1st gear seems ok
    - when in 5th gear at 70km/h, even if i try to step on the pedal no acceleration power at all (RPM range about 1500). Previously hindi ganito experience ko.
    - pag idle di naman mausok and i previously don't experience smoke belching in my 2000 Olive Carnival ngayon lang kapag tumatakbo. I am diligent in my oil change ngayon nga i tru to change oil every 3000-4000 km. Pero maitim na agad yung oil even less than a week after oil change.

I suspect baka madumi yung intake manifold. I remember somewhere in this thread nag accumulate yung dumi at carbon doon and my car probably needs cleaning. I would probably want to do this and check the effect. Any suggestion on where or how to go about it.

Appreciate din if you can help me diagnose what seems wrong with my car. Let me know if you need additional details.

    thanks.

    hi Raddie,

I think you're suspect on intake manifold is valid. I would highly recommend to have the in-take manifold for check-up. Turbo is basically forcing more air on the chamber in order to facilitate the combustion process hence more power. In issues relating to POOR response of Turbo, the 1st step should be to check the AIR, example... air filters, in-take manifold for unburned oil coming from EGR... etc.

For the unit to work more efficient, mixture of diesel and air should be ok. Black smokes at idle means more diesel and less/unpurified air or the other way around.

So, it's worth to check the air filter and intake manifold.

    Cheers!

raddie::: I second generic_boy's suggestions to check the air filter and intake manifold. I've also noticed that when my air filter is already dirty (when I'm almost due for an oil change), the amount of black smoke produced during hard acceleration may increase and pulling power slightly decreases, compared to when I have a brand new air filter installed.

You could also check your turbo hoses for leaks or damage.

    toybeats::: Welcome to the forum

AFAIK, the 2006 Sedona isn't out yet locally. You could call Wheels Inc or another local dealer to inquire about its availability and pricing.

The Carnival is the name of Kia's 1st gen minivan. It was given a makeover after a few years (2nd gen) and in some markets (e.g. USA and RP) the name was changed to Sedona. However, if you get a grey market unit intended for Korea, it will still be carrying the Carnival badge. Second gen grey market Carnivals usually have more features compared to their local Sedona counterparts, but the catch here is that you don't get the casa warranty (3 years or 110,000 km).

I had the same power loss and black smoke problem before (I have a 2001 Carnival LS) and it was more pronounced in the inclines. I took it back to Signet Mandaluyong and was told that Kia was anticipating this problem in the Phils. so they are replacing the muffler assembly plus some other parts for free.

After replacement my Carnival got its old power back, I also haven't experienced the same problem until now.

diesoline: ok, i've seen you mention mang mario before, but sorry, where is he? is it ok to post his details? everyone would seem to benefit.

guys, i've asked before whether a mechanical idiot like me can remove the turbo charger and other parts in order to clean the intake manifold and the answer was yes. unfotunately, i'm more known for taking things apart rather than together so i chickened out.

any chance anybody out there is willing to make a step by step procedure how to do this with pics? i had my manifold cleaned by wheels recently and the money sounds to be better saved, especially since it seems the intake should be attended to on a regular basis.

toybeats, welcome bro... just to share my experience on my CARNIVAL, the family loves the car's interior very much. It’s very roomy and has a good airflow of air conditioning system. We can fit in a number of passengers and yet everyone will feel the cold air flowing. Yung mga bulinggit, ginagawang playground ung loob, misan nga may nakikita ako laruan pag naglilinis.

In terms of engine response, once you get to 2000 RPM for few seconds, a slight pressure in the pedal will results to a significant increase in speed... or will speed up to 140KPH. Because the TURBO CHARGER starts to kick-in beyond 2000 RPM.

In terms of suspension, Carnival has a very good suspension system (front and rear), which is coupled by 15-inch mags. Very dependable talaga... especially at long trips.

So we will always find a place to visit specially during weekends. Sarap mamasyal kapag kasama si CARNIVAL.... he.he.he... Yun nga lang, I always clean and check-up my CARNIVAL... as they say, with TLC (total love and care) the CARVINAL will work perfect.

Mikey, ano ba ang magandang coolant... napansin ko talaga na medyo maiinit na and a good coolant can help ease-out themal stress on the engine specially on the rubber parts. Dito kasi nagsisimula ung over heat lalo na kapag lumutong and mapulbos ung component ng rubber... thanks.

    generic boy,

I'm sure they'd give you the info if you asked nicely. Their trunkline is (02) 416-3837/38. Or you could always make up a story about your having to top off the contents of the reservoir because it's running low

    Mikey, thanks....

I was brousing in the net and found a coolant which seems to be ok... features are:
    - Utilizes hybrid organic acid technology to minimize inhibitor depletion
    - Low-silicate, low-pH and phosphate-free formula
    - Provides protection against liner pitting and corrosion
    - Helps prevent rust and corrosion
    - Helps prevent hot weather boil-overs and cold weather freeze-ups
    - Protects all cooling system metals, including aluminum

Try ko ito sa unit and monitor performance...

Thank you for your suggestions. I guess i'll just do that, clean the intake manifold and replace air filter, probably ask wheels about the muffler assembly.

    generic boy,

it says in our manual on what kind of coolant we should use. and another thing. the data on the cooling system's capacity is wrong. from what i found out, its lower than what's on the manual.

anyone had problems with their alternators?

this must be the third time that my alt is acting up.

    obsservations:
    - battery warning indicator in dashboard is gone
    - alternator is not charging (lights & accessories become weak as i drive along)
    - starts normally
    - when i pick up speed it returns to normal

    what do you think guys.

benchph1, had similar problem before... only in my case, the battery warning lit up very very dim during idle condition (battery indicator is OK when the key is in ON position) and will go to normal when i rev-up. I let it in that condition for more than a week and then the battery indicator is gone (when the key is ON position) . When i use the unit one night with all electronics and lights are ON, the battery went dead and engine won't start-up.

I thought that the IC regulator is defective, so I went to electrician for check-up. And it was diagnosed that the IC regulator is confirmed defective plus CARBON brush is used-up or waer out. When we replaced the CARBON brush and IC regulator and the problem is gone.

According to electrician, once the carbon brush is used up and run the unit for sometime, the IC will be damaged as well. Sya nga pala... again according to eletrician, the aux FAN of canival is special... it's a high speed fan the consumes considerable high amount of current. He added that for a unit with 50T KM, it is not normal for the carbon brush to be used-up. Some factors that affect it's wear and tear is the current load of the battery.

benchph1, I also experienced that. The battery indicator didn't even light up. My lights were getting dim, the radio turned off by itself and i had no lights in my dashboard display. The next day wala na - dead na battery and will not start anymore. I checked for an original alternator and it will cost around PhP15k if I remember correctly.

Different topic - meron ba dito may alam kung saan makakabili ng hub cap lang na kia korea ang design not the normal kia local design. Nasira kase yung sa akin eh pangit ng walang takip yung mags. TIA.
