hello jordan.

i don't know about the others but 45k km for a four year old car is a bit too low (unless it was just utilized as a second car/out-of-town car). sometimes, i log that much mileage in a year's time.

re the brakes, your friend may be right. the hydrovac booster must have been compromised. i have experienced that twice before in my opel manta (my dearly beloved first car). the assembly was expensive during those times. pero opel part yun ha, hindi kia.

I got back from Quezon City late last night after having my Sedona checked up at Wheels E.Rod for the previously mentioned whistling sound.

Their findings were that the turbocharger assembly was already damaged, hence the whistling sound when the vehicle accelerates. When the service adviser gave me a quote for the replacement part, I nearly fell off my seat: P40,000

I said I would just bring the van back when it reaches 120,000-km (it is currently at 106,000-km) in about two months, so that if I need to have the oil chain replaced also, it will just be one inconvenience when they open up the engine.

The weird thing is, on my entire drive home to Pangasinan, the whistling sound was nowhere to be heard. Even when I took the van out again this morning, there was no trace of the sound. Para akong na-Twilight Zone, o siguro pinagdasal ni misis na maayos yung sasakyan na hindi malaki ang gastos namin kasi nagpapagawa kami ng bahay ngayon

Honestly, the service advisor didn't elaborate on which part was damaged, and I failed to ask him about it too. Pasensya na po. Sobra siguro akong natulala sa presyo ng replacement part at di ko na naisipan itanong yung details.

Anyway, I reiterated to our family driver this morning that he should observe the proper engine warm-up and cooldown procedures to maintain the good condition of the turbocharger.

Folks I hope you can help me on this one.

I had my 2001 Carnival Park II in for wheel alignment and to center the steering wheel. They said the alighnment was fine but they couldn't center the steering wheel after 3 tries.

They'd center the steering wheel, test drive it but as soon as the steering wheel is turned and locked to one side it goes out of center. The steering wheel would cant in favor of the side where it was turned and locked. Turn and locked the other way and the steering wheel will cant the other way.

Has my steering wheel developed bipolar disorder? Or is it the rack & pinion assembly (please, not that...)?

daco, could it be may pagka loose thread na ang steering wheel mismo connecting to the steering column? Or maluwag yung nut that connects the manibela to the steering column?

Guys, si victory belated nagpapahabol ng manual. Mahirap kung partial partial yung request. Takes me the whole day to send the whole thing, assuming di ako ganun ka busy.

Pero yung kay victory is the old carnival, while the manual is the sedona series. I think its not the same. The dashboard and indicators are quite different between the two designs.

daco tyan the Carnival I'm supposed to buy have the same condition regarding the steering wheel (towards the right).

Hope to hear from you guys to solve daco tyan's problem and help me decide before I finally take the plunge.
I hope this is just a minor thing at mura lang kung sakali may i-repair o palitan.

jordan, might be just a case of mis-aligned steering wheel. In which case, it should be easy to remedy.

Just heard form the local Kia dealer (RS Autosphere). Bad news: it is the rack & pinion. Good news (sort of...): apparently, it's only a worn out bushing on both of the rack & pinion bracket. They're now in the process of removing the rack & pinion then it's off to the machine shop to fabricate new bushings for the bracket.

As a side note, the mechanics said the rack & pinion's mounting brackets don't match any of the 2 service manuals they checked. Apparently, the local units have removable brackets while mine is fixed to the rack & pinion itself.

Got my Carnival back. Steering wheel about a notch out of center and it's much firmer than before. It could be because: a) new ATf for the PS; b) repaired bushing on the rack & pinion assembly bracket; c) something got over-tightened.

The car does feel better moving, didn't notice it was a bit squirelly before.

*Sigh* last time I'll buy a used car. But then how else can I afford a car?

ello... i read the threads regarding carnival in this forum. At the same time i searched almost everywhere for a 2nd hand carnival. Read some negative feedbacks which in turn is resolved by proper preventive maintenance from the "experts" (in this forum).

Was able to find one... 2001 Carnival LS, 2nd hand which is locally puchased (Wheels Inc.) Just like to have idea if the odometer is correct... (it reads 46Tkm for a 4.5 year old). What do i need to check before i close the deal?

Would like to know also, all in all the annual preventive maintenance cost... approx would be fine.

Also, in case the deal went smooth, what is the frst maintenace i need to do on the unit? consideing its millage done.

Hi, generic_boy.

To determine whether 46,000-km is realistic for a 4-1/2 year old vehicle, ask the owner what his daily route is and get the distance travelled per day, then multiply it by the number of days in 4-1/2 years. I find the figure to be low since I travel 120 km every day, so my Carnival has clocked over 100,000-km in just 3 years time.

As has been said before, it would be good to have a trusted mechanic with you when you inspect the vehicle. Do a road test and check for unusual noises, engine performance, smoke emissions, and puddles of fluid on the ground under the engine bay. Rev the engine to above 3,000 rpm and see if there is black smoke coming from the exhaust that doesn't go away after a few revs. If you can inspect the undercarriage, check for signs of rust or collision damage. Check for uneven tire wear and check the condition of the suspension. Check airconditioner cooling capacity --sa Carnival dapat kahit nasa 1 pa lang yung setting ng fan, malamig na sa cabin.

If the unit is casa maintained, ask to see the past preventive maintenance records to get an idea of how the unit was cared for. A typical PMS at Wheels Inc (change oil and oil filter) costs around P3,000+ if you use synthetic motor oil. The PMS should be done every 5,000-km.

Also inspect all electrical connections, function of all lights and lamps, wipers, washer fluid, fan belts, steering wheel play, clutch, etc.

Some suggested first maintenance items would be the replacement of the air filter, fuel filter and oil filter if these were not performed during the last PMS and if the condition of the vehicle indicates the need for such changes.

I once saw a Metro Manila based car that ran for less than 10,000 kms. a year. First time in 4 or 5 years the family took it out of town the water pump broke.

Appreciate these advises... but now am having a hard time to decide. I’m really impressed on the front wheel drive and the cabin (very accommodating and the children’s loves it very much). And to mention the suspension system. But the engine condition is a must!

Think, i have to do extra effort to verify it odometer reading (the main issue or gating factor). Does anyone here know a person from Wheels Inc., so i can do a sanity check on its odometer and the last PMS.

I did consult the seller if we can do emission test, but he said “ wala diesel engine pumapasa sa legal na emission testing “. Don’t know where he is coming from but his statement seems to be very general (true for all vehicles daw). I hope someone can give me clarification.

I’m serious in buying one for the family. This one or whatever unit… Does anyone here can refer me to a seller (pang 2001 na budget po). In that way, I can be confident that what I’m buying is a genuine.

I think the seller is not telling you the whole condition about this unit. Lokoloko siya to generalize na walang pumapasa na diesel. I supervise over 100 units of our company vehicles, and mostly are diesels. And trust me, I don't pay the smoke emission centers to fake the results. What for? The results are only for registration purposes. If it smoke belches, mahuhuli din yan sa mobile emission group ng lto! So I instructed our motorpool to keep the units properly maintained. Take note this kia's engine has a tendency to be a smoke belcher if not maintained properly. 2nd, since this unit is an analog type odometer, it can be adjusted. Some ways to verify the odometer aside from checking the records from the casa or the owner's service records:

1. at 50K mileage, you should still see the grooves on all the pedals. Di pa dapat pudpod yan, maski konti. Of course, this assumes he didn't put any after market pedal add-ons.
2. ask if he has replaced the timing belt. Timing belt for our unit I believe is set around 60-80K (I forgot). So if he says yes, magduda ka na.
3. look around the engine, sometimes they put a sticker on the last change oil or change timing belt and state the odometer reading.

Still, engine status is more important than an adjusted odometer, because majority of surplus carnivals could have their odometers reversed, yet are still good.

It's normal for our unit to smoke belch at 3K rpm, but should disappear in a short while when held steady at 3K rpm. This unit needs to be occasionally revved 3K and beyond to flush out accumulated carbon deposits, with or without biodiesel use. Make sure the idling is smooth and not erratic. Aircon is strong especially the rear.

I agree with altec on this note. I've never bribed an emission testing center to falsify the results of their test when I bring my Sedona in, but I always pass with a good clean margin.

Wheels Inc. keeps complete service record that indicate the odometer reading of a vehicle during each PMS, but I don't know if they will release such data to third parties.
