i have experienced that too and the cause is the fresh air intake opening located at the plastic lip below the windshield.

when it was time to pay up, i asked mang mario how much the damage was. i received his standard reply of "bigyan mo na lang siya ng pangsigarilyo". i gave the guy p200.

my 200-peso question is: how much should a "pang-sigarilyo" tip cost?
btw, that temporary fix is still working as of this time. they closed the intake by gluing on illustration board (i think) behind the intake flap. still good after nearly three years.

i just want to share this info to those who still have problems on smelling smoke coming from the outside even though the outside air intake flap has been disabled... yun sa akin kasi same situation sealed na lahat pero still i'm smelling a little bit of smoke coming from the outside...

here it is.. i found the culprit.... it is on the right side panel of the windshield!! there is a panel cover there that can be easily removed.. when i removed the panel, there is a small hole on the lower portion where the air outside is coming from.. i immediately plugged the hole and there the problem was solved...

Sorry sir, ngayon lang ako nakapag-bukas ng Tsikot uli after several days. I'm a bit toxic because we're setting up a new business.

Anyway, I hope your trip to Dagupan went smoothly.

It has been more than 7 weeks since I last posted on this particular thread and, unfortunately, my wish of not having any problems with my '01 Carnival after my maintenance run didn't come true. First significant item to go was my battery (understandable since it was quite old). Then the alternator wasn't charging anymore. Had it checked & they found out that an IC (a small electronic thing) was busted . Good thing it didn't cost that much. I'm not sure if I already mentioned that I had the radiator overhauled too. Then the aircon blower made a loud & strange noise (when idle or stationary) after an hour of running. Had the blower oiled but just this week it came back again. I'll have it fixed tomorrow, hopefully. Buti na lang the aircon is ok & still super cold (except during noon). Just this weekend, I noticed that my brakes were quite weak. Had the fluid checked & it was below minimum. I've been topping it up since this morning (may leak kasi). Right now they're replacing the part/assembly where you put the fluid on (brakemaster asssembly? or something). It cost 3000 sa Fronte. Among the numerous second hand cars I've owned (most as old as 10 years when I bought them) it's the first time that I'm replacing that part of the vehicle. I've probably gotten used to having this car repaired all the time that I'm already wondering what the next repair would be. In fact it's scheduled for one tomorrow (aircon blower). In fairness (parang line sa TV), this has taken me to Baguio & Batangas without any problems (except for a flat tire in Baguio w/c could even happen to a new car).

I also had a bad experience with Wheels * E. Rodriguez. Pina check ko kasi yung grinding noise sa steering wheel everytime I make a turn. They said it was quite normal for old carnivals so they corrected it (I think) by shaving off part of the steering wheel. So it worked but (they probably disconnected the battery & the stereo connection) after that the stereo didn't work. I had it brought back the next morning so they could fix it. It turned to be a bad decision since they didn't work on it at all. So I brought it to Banawe to have it fixed. It cost me another 100 (plus gas & waste of time) when it should have been free since there was nothing wrong with it when it was brought to Wheels in the first place. So stay away from the place.

Come to think of it, the previous problem I mentioned is again another 'first'. Now I'm having an issue with the front suspension (or part of it at least). There should be none since the shocks are new & the other 'pang ilalim' are supposedly ok. Problem arises not on big potholes (at least not during slow approaches) but on small ones. Imagine old cemented roads with uneven, grainy surfaces or uncovered small lines carved across subdivision roads that will be probably be laid with a steel hose for whatever purpose or just potholes small enough to be ignored. When the front wheels pass through, it has this uncalled for "thud" or continuous thuds in the case of cemented roads with the gravel visible on top, & the irritating part is that the steering wheel column shudders with it. I just remembered the white hard lines along SLEX/NLEX & other major roads that you pass through before an exit or intersection, at certain speeds, the front including the steering column shudders. The big question is "Is that normal?" I hope somebody could give me an answer. & somebody please convince me not to sell this car at a ridiculously low price in exchange for an older, most likely smaller, hotter (for passengers) but more reliable car (sedan) so that I could have more peace of mind when it comes to repairs & maintenance.

    Sir Guwardiya:

A bad stabilizer link, rack end, tie rods or ball joints may cause this thudding sound in your suspension. Have this check again by your mechanic.

    sir guwardiya,

suspension mo may problem pag may ingay.. try changing one at a time especially yung stabilizer links and bushings yan ang unang pinagmumulan ng ingay.. sa akin dati maingay din so pinalitan ko yung stabilizer bar bushing 50pesos each at Fronte, ayaw pa nga palitan nung mekaniko kasi buo pa naman daw.. pero nung nilagay yung bago eh tumahimik na

also yung "thud sound" normal yan sa kia carnival especially on the passenger side.. meron ka madidinig the "thud" pag small holes.. pero dapat slight lang hindi naman yung parang kalog na kalog.. i also have that sound but can only be heard when you listen closely..also you may need to change your torsion arm bushing

yung sinsabi mo sa SLEX/NLEX na white strip, aka RUMBLE STRIP may definitely cause severe noise inside the cabin as its purpose is to give WARNING to sleepy drivers that something up ahead is coming..

Bakit kaya ang mga lumang kotse, sensitive? While driving to Tarlac, I mentioned to my wife that when we eventually sell the Sedona, we should get a smaller vehicle like a Getz so it doesn't attract too much attention.

Any idea on what the cause is? The mechanic at Kia Pangasinan, whom I spoke with over the phone, said it might be the cam shaft pulley, but he won't know until he checks the unit out (if I can find a way to tow it there). Well, maybe Kia's really weren't supposed to last more than five years. Sigh.

What happened was that I was doing errands around Tarlac City midday yesterday, when all of a sudden, as I was about to park I felt sudden loss of power steering. Then, after a few minutes, when I was about to leave the place where I was parked, the brake warning and battery charge lights went on after I started the van.

Anyway, I'll have a better idea about the problem once the mechanic checks the van out.

Moral of the story: never let your vehicle overhear that you are planning to sell it

Here is the problem so far: When I turn the aircon on, the parking brake and battery warning lights come on and the power steering and brakes cease to function.

Actually, if I keep the steering wheel in a turn for more than a few seconds, the warning indicators also light up, and they go off when the steering wheel is centered again. However, the problem is most noticeable when the aircon is switched on.

The mechanics I consulted diagnosed it to be an alternator problem, but I already had my alternator inspected this afternoon. They replaced an IC and re-installed the alternator, but the problem still persisted.

Then, I remembered sir yapoy's post a few pages back:

Ask first the auto electrician to do what I did like; Re- Solder all connection points especially in the diodes area, replace carbon brush, Reinforcement of the charging pole, and checking the IC regulator for the right amount of voltage. If the alternator has LOW VOLTAGE, signs will be your ABS lights will turn ON, Tachometer drops, If HIGH VOLTAGE, OIL Pressure and parking brake lights will turn on.
I will recommend that these items be checked when I return the van to the shop tomorrow.

have your CRANK SHAFT PULLEY checked... possible that the main drive pulley is already separated from the belt pulley.. normally kasi meron "rubber" sa pagitan nung CRANK SHAFT PULLEY that separates the main drive dun sa belt for absorbing vibration... possible na natanggal na yung rubber... your power steering is mechanical so kahit wala kang battery as long as umaandar ang makina eh meron ka dapat power steering assist also your brake assist is mechanical vacuum pump at the back of the alternator.. i'll post the sample pic of that pulley later...same happened to our BESTA before... bigla lang nawalan ng power steering at brake assist.. tapos umilaw yung battery charging indicator.. pag on ng aircon mahina din lamig... yung pulley pala problema umiikot yung crankshaft pulley pero yung mga nakadikit sa kanya like alternator, aircon and power steering pump eh naiiwan kasi nawala na nga yung rubber damper na connector nila..

kaya nag ilaw yung battery charging mo kasi hindi na umiikot yung alternator mo naiiwan na especially pag may load yung belts when you turn the power steering... (alternator and power steering share the same belt) same thing pag nag on ka ng aircon.. yung parking brake lights nag on kasi connected yan sa battery charging indicator try mo na disengage yung parking brake before starting the engine you will notice kahit hindi ka naka parking brake eh naka ilaw pa rin yun.. but once you start it will go away together with the OIL pressure indicator and battery charge indicator

pa check mo agad yung CRANKSHAFT PULLEY medyo mahal lang yan...

^ sir, bullseye ang diagnosis mo sa problema.

The technician at the casa removed the wheel and the plastic guard covering the part of the engine bay where the pulley was, and sure enough, the inner and outer portions were not moving in synch anymore, especially when the aircon is on.

Now my only problem is waiting for the part to arrive from Kia Pampanga. Sigh.

you can order that part sa FRONTE dito sa banawe or good gear sa may pasay... more or less nasa 4,500 pesos yan.... yung sa akin kasi when i heard na may squeaking soung na pinalitan ko agad... same with our besta before parang every 5 years bumibigay yang part na yan...sa besta namin na 2times palit kami sa mazda 323 ko din nagpalit me ng ganyan when i hear squeaking sound (given that belts and bearings are good)

That's crazy to realize that the brakes are dependent on the belts and alternator, so if the belts snap (it happens) you don't have braking assistance. Now I'm wondering why Kia didn't just tap the intake manifold for manifold vacuum and route it to the brake booster, that way you can still get vacuum when the engine is on so you can safely pull over the side of the road. Is it a diesel?

Nonetheless ang galing ng bullseye diagnosis, I'm glad nothing worse happened.

On another note hindi ba pwede magpa machine ng metal part to replace that rubber component that allows the crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer to work in tandem? That way you don't have to worry about having to replace it in another 5 years again. Yapoy is right have the crankshaft seal done na rin and possible even the timing belt if it has a belt (or chain).

the rubber between the pulley is INJECTED so we cannot replace it by metal otherwise we need to have it permanently welded.. but it may have an effect on your crankshaft bearings as it was designed to absorb vibration to protect the bearings and other moving parts especially modern engine can do very high RPMs..

regarding the brake assist.. kia carnival has a vacuum reserve tank to provide vacuum assist in the event that the engine suddenly stall while running or during hard braking or the belts snap...intake manifold vacuum doesn't have enough vacuum to assist this very large and heavy minivan.. it is only applicable for light vehicles.. i know it is now a safety standard to every vehicle to have a vacuum reserve tank..

for sir mikey177 problem he lost the vacuum since the alternator was not moving at proper speed. unfortunately the vacuum is supplied by the vacuum pump of the alternator.. same thing will happen if it was placed in the intake manifold and suddenly the engine stalls like for example busted timing belt same thing will happen you will have loss of power brake assist!! bottom line is always be aware and do not rely so much on this power brakes and steerings you should be always ready for cases just like these and always know what to do...

sir mikey177 didn't loss the brakes , its only the vacuum assist that has been lost making the brake hard to apply...
