I might be too simplistic for me to say it helps save gas. I'm not too technical about it pero it could be an engine management thing...
I've been traveling to Bicol Region. And, these are my observations:

    1. The speed would gradually increase to 100 kph or more at the constant 2,000 RPM.

    2. If I revved it to overtake, the RPM would reach 3,000 RPM then suddenly drops to 2,000 RPM upon reaching 90 to 100 kph. So, at much as possible, I maintain my speed at 90 to 100 kph.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We've traveled to Legaspi City and back. Just arrived home yesterday. From the time we left and arrived back home, I saw two Carens only on the road - a black LX in Naga City and a violet somewhere along the highway of Quezon.

My average fuel consumption for the 1,101 km. trip was 11.5 kpl. Madaming traffic along the way, especially in town propers.

    Please check my blog.

It's probably because of so many traffics along the way, especially in SLEX and town propers.

Ang pinakamataas ko ay 14+ kph.

No offense taken. I was quite surprised myself because I'm actually dissapointed with the Caren's FC. Pag pure city driving, I hardly make 8k/liter. They told me kasi before I bought it, na average niya is 8-10km/l city driving. NOT!

Anyway, I noticed pag highway driving and you keep to the speed limit, ok ang FC. Sana nga lang puro highway dito.

For those with A/T: That's probably because in city driving, your speed is less than 69 km/hr. Our Carens is in 3rd gear only at that speed; hence FC is high.

Yes. It's really disappointing to not be able to shift to 4th gear unless your you hit 70kph.

I went to Baguio last Dec. 26 and went back on the 29th. My FC was only 10km/l (highway and Baguio city driving). 7 hrs. ang travel time to Baguio(no stops)... grabe ang traffic from Moncada to Urdaneta. I guess without the traffic sa highway, my A/T Carens' FC would be in the vicinity of 13-14km/l. Sobrang traffic din kasi sa Baguio mismo, much more than Metro Manila. Pure city driving in Manila averages 8 to 8.5km/l.

Hmmm... that's enlightening... Is it true that however fast you're going (above 80, or 100kph), if you only let go of the accelerator without pressing the brakes, the rpm goes down to about 1000 ONLY? That surely saves a lot of fuel! Can anyone here confirm it?

I've recently tried doing this on a Honda Accord, it doesn't engine-brake only if the speed is below 60kph. On my Avanza, the cut-off seems to be 40kph, and it still depends on how abrupt I let go of the gas pedal.

It's true with my Carens LX AT CRDi.

I took pictures on our way back from Bicol. For safety reason, I limited the speed to 80 kph while taking the pics. The same thing happens at 100 kph or over.
