maybe this is the pro version of the grand starex.. hehehe the one i saw at the motorshow had the fire extinguisher located by the side step of the driver side.. so basically the GRX 12 seater is better than this version of the Grand starex.. by the way the GRX 12 seater that i check out a few months ago.. had pretty much good leg room for me. im a 5'9 and kinda on the fat ass side. so i really wanted to see the legroom or knee room more like it.. so wat i did was sat at the back row and adjusted the seat that was in the front so that i will have enough knee room.. then i moved to the next seat and adjusted it too then adjusted the one in front. then i also sat in the seats that was behind the driver.. and for me it gave enough knee room.. so heres why im wondering how the grandstarex will have less room when its supose to be longer and bigger than the current 12 seater GRX,, the first grandstarex i sat in was the one at the motorshow.. and it felt smaller.. the other day i had the chance to have my starex driving side by side with a Grandstarex here in santa rosa and for the first time i felt it was bigger.. . i really hope someone will post some pics of the current GRX 9 seater and 12 seater side by side with the grand starex so we can tell the major size variations...

Sorry, i don't have the pics you're asking for, but I did notice a 9 seater GRX lined up after a 12 seater Grand Starex at Krispy Kreme Greenhills. The 9 seater did look small, though not as small as if it were lined up after a Grandia.

The current Jumbo should have less space compared to the slab-sided and boxy Grand Starex, then again, perhaps the interior layout, dash, etc, ate some of the interior space.

I visited Hyundai Global today. They had on display the 12-Seater TCI Manual Transmission Grand Starex. It was a white color model. Im too lazy to upload the camera photos I took but here are my impressions:

    1. While it certainly has the new look going for it, the exterior 'finish' of this entry level variant is very disappointing. (If you can call P1.2 million entry level). It had black plastic bumpers and ugly black plastic mirrors.
    2. It had NO third brake light. The spot where it was supposed to be was covered in a plastic mold. I find this skimping on a vital safety feature mind-boggling. Which car worth over P1 million nowadays doesnt have a third brake light?
    3. It had NO foglamps. Again these were covered with slatted plastic molds / placeholders
    4. Ok onto the interior.... it was a 12 seater version so it had a total of 4 rows. Front row was missing the fire extinguisher that the older Starex had. The guages were simple but readable and the aircon controls were simple to understand as well. It did not have automatic climate control. The stereo was a 1-DIN UNBRANDED !!!!! unit. Though to compensate it could play DVDs (there was no LCD monitor of course... that was an extra option) and it had an SD card slot as well. But still.... it looked cheap.
    5. The front row seats were nice and the fabric was very well done. The middle seat folded down to form a tray table with 2 cupholders. This arrangement is repeated in the 2nd and 3rd row.
    6. The 2nd row is NOT captains chair layout. However, the leg room is adjustable as they are on rails. Same middle seat as the front row.
    7. The 3rd row is a duplicate of the 2nd row except that leg room is NOT adjustable. There are NO rails for the 3rd row. When the 2nd row is moved backwards to give their occupants some leg room, the backs of the 2nd row seats literally are in contact with the edges of the 3rd row bench portion. This means you better just put infants or small children here. Or if its an adult... make him/ her just lie down LOL.
    8. The 4th row is bench type and can be folded down / forward for more storage space. The mechanism looks simple enough to operate with one hand so kudos to them here. However the leg room is also minimal.
    9. Like the older Starex, you CANNOT open the rear windows or the middle windows. You can only vent them. Very disappointing.
    10. There are no roof rails that come standard , they only come as an option.
    11. There are no body graphics and this makes the van look overly slab sided as there are no contrours to 'break the view'. The van look liked an ambulance or delivry van. It was so big and square.
    12. At least it had decent looking mags (I cant remember the size).
    13. The engine bay did not look cramped and they covered the old 2.5 TCI lump with a plastic cover thank goodness. I could only see 1 fan though so Im not sure about heat dissipation in our summer heat.
    14. Parking brake was hand operated and not the foot-pedal type.Whew ...

Thats all for now from my first impressions of the unit. Sadly, no one in Hyundai Fort had any idea about the configuration for the 9/10 seater version. I was asking if there was any exterior or interior detail changes and they had no idea either. Tsssk tsssk. They are introducing a new variant as well : a 10-seater A/T CRDi model (they didnt have this in their price lists earlier).

    that's all for now.
Ok na din yung current specs ng grand starex, kahit yung TCI M/T, best of all, they were able to retain the good old engine we used to love/ have. Kung frustrated kayo sa entry level, bilhin nyo yung top of the line Grand Starex!!! di ba? Hindi nga maitinda dito ngayon yung Toyota Alphard, Nissan Serena, Mercedes Benz Viano, Honda Step Wagon, Mazda Bongo Friendee, kasi talo sila sa market ng Hyundai eh. I'm not a fan of Hyundai but I'm a current Starex owner, lover, loyal, and believer. Let's all support Hyundai that this Grand Starex become the world's favorite van this decade. LOL.

Bro. where is the aux fan? Sa 12-seater TCI MT model na nakita ko sa showroom, isa lang ang fan,- iyong directly driven ng engine shaft....Nothing more was shown to me by the SA. Sabi mo earlier, may fan pero on a different (and higher) variant ng Starex. We are comparing it to the same variant of the current model.

EQAddict has given us a very good review of the current offering. Masyadong strip down version ang kanilang TCI MT model.... Tsk tsk tsk... I didn't notice it but no third brake light, no roof rails, no rear wing(spoiler?). And no fog lamps ???

It leaves a bad taste in the mouth, since this is more expensive than the current model of the same variant,- iba lang ang body. Well,- drivers/owners just don't go with aesthetics....Everyone who wasn't born yesterday surely knows that...

Commenting only on 2 of your observations bro (I generally agree with the rest). Very good observations... Did you notice the protruding antenna on the roof? IMO, it's a definite eyesore.... The glass mounted film antenna comes only with the higher (more expensive) variant....

    9. This is what I really cannot understand with the current offerings for people carrier. Why can't the rear window be opened independently? It is all so easy to stack things up at the back if you can open the rear window. That is why I still love my Vanette (of course, I love my Starex too). No van can beat it (the Vanette) when it comes to the convenience of loading it at the back.

Up close and personal, the TCI M/T does look very plain and bare with all these items taken out. It also does not have any side moldings (claddings pa tawag dun?) like the GRX.

BTW, when Hyundai launched the Grand Starex in Korea back in May this year, the press release of Hyundai Korea says the 'The price of the Grand Starex ranges from 16.95 mln won to 22.55 mln won. ( 1 usd = 929.10 won )'.
This is around US $ 18.2k to US $ 24.2k. This translates to a peso price of ( 1 usd = 46 pesos) around Php 840k for the lowest end model, to Php 1.12M for the highest end model. Comparing it to the local price list, ang low end model nila is Php 1.198 (TCI M/T 9 seater) tapos ang high end is Php 1.780M. Sana, i-adjust ng HARI - all time best seller ito if they do. Magiging profitable pa rin naman sila sa volume.

Are the features that you listed above (or even just some of them) available in the Automatic version? Ang layo naman ng price difference from an automatic to the manual kung transmission lang yung nagiiba.

    thanks

I could'nt see myself driving the Grand Starex the way I drive my GRX A/T. Another thing I like about the old Starex is the last row seats na pwede i-fold kung di kailangan, kasi in my case I only have 4 passenger most of the time pero madami gamit dala kaya ideal sa kin yung ganung set up ng upuan.

Fellow tsikoteers, please keep us posted here. This is pretty interesting. I can agree with Hyundai's SA on the intercooler as we cannot id where the air scoops were on the New Starex..... Whew!

And, I'll be looking for a replacement van in a few months, maybe a year... Hope that Hyundai bridges the various gaps by that time. Else, it looks like I need to take extra care of my precious precious and oohhh so precious Starex....

lui,- again,- thanks so much bro. You are a true tsikoteer!

kaya siguro talaga mahal 'to dahil LWB. for sure, they will introduce the SWBs but after disposing the LWB and realizing that the price is too high for regular car buyers.

starex SWB will be again be the saviour for van lovers with small families out there hehehe.

in our case, there's only 5 in the family whenever we have out of town vacations. the third row of our Starex GRX is used for baggages, and mineral water, golf bags, and our dog's vanity kit

we are still confused with what CRDi variant we will buy. we are still undecided between the 12-seater GLS and the 10-seater Gold... i hope HARI will change the 10-seater layout with this kind of layout: 2+2+3+3; captain chairs for the first and second row of seats, another set of captain chairs for the third row but with a jumpseat at the center, and bench type seats at the 4th and last row.

2008 Hyundai Starex (Gen. 4)
