To D or not to D

This is the most commonly asked question by owners of automatic cars: “Should I put the lever to N, or leave it in D while waiting at traffic light junctions?” The answer is, leave it in D and use the brakes to hold the car at a standstill. All modern automatic gearboxes are designed to cope with this, so there is no unnecessary wear and tear on the mechanical components.

Frequently shifting from D to N and vice versa, however, puts strain on the gearbox and its electronically controlled solenoids. In the long run, this may result in premature failure of some components, and a hefty repair bill. It’s also a common misconception that holding the car with the brakes leads to additional wear and tear on the braking parts. Since the car is stationary, there is no friction between the pads and discs, so there is no extra wear.

Many drivers of manual cars like shifting to neutral and letting the car coast to a halt when the traffic lights ahead are red. Not only is this practice dangerous as all engine braking is lost (making the car less stable if sudden braking is required), fuel consumption also goes up. Modern fuel-injected cars have a fuel cut-off system that operates only when a gear is engaged and the foot is taken off the accelerator pedal. If the car is rolling along in neutral, fuel still needs to be pumped into the engine to keep it idling, so more fuel is actually used.

    Hope this helps......
Thanks a bunch bolantoy! This is the exact thread that I remember. I do hope your posting it here will help!

If you feel that V-Kool is too expensive, the next best thing is SolarGard. They have nearly the same amount of UV protection at a fraction of the cost. It's better than 3M.

You can call SolarGard/V-Kool at 725-5570, look for Leslie. If you bring your unit to their shop, they can have sample sheets stuck to your window, so you can compare which shades you like best.

thank you for the recomendations, i think im going to go with V-Kool. i remember now their demo's nuon pag transport show sa megatrade. V-Kool really is cool

now that may mapagbibilhan na ng tint, dun na rin po ba OK mag pakabit ng tint? ive noticed sa ibang cars namin kasi na hindi ko masyado nagustuhan is along the edges, wavy ang pag ka cut and hindi straight, althou its going to be hidden anyway pag closed ang window, still im after quality talaga. Ok ba sila magkabit?

Yup! The shop I mentioned only does tints. You drive your ride inside an airconditioned room, para minimal dust contamination. That's where they do the tinting. You have to call them in advance, 'coz by appointment ang tinting. Dami pumipila, lalo't magsa-summer.

Compare mo lang UV deflection of SolarGard and V-Kool when you get there. I think they are made by the same company eh. For a Fortuner, SolarGard will prolly cost around P5T-6T for a full tint (including front windshield). Pag V-Kool, around P16T-P18T. You can buy an iPod Nano with that price difference...

Wow, this is great, I would definitely change my driving habits now, thanks guys

    Pero iniisip ko pa din, pano kung super tagal ng mga stop lights? parang nakakapagod na laging nakaapak sa "D" pag nagiintay kang mag-GO? I always put it to neutral kasi minsan I use the phone or just rest my legs/feet. Pag naka "D" kasi dapat lagi kang nakaapak sa brakes or else mag-momove yung car and you might hit the car in front -_-;

In this case OK bang mag-hand brake while on "D" para di gumalaw yung car, since you guys suggested na laging naka-D dapat?

peeps, ok lang ba pag minsan i shift from D to 3 when overtaking on a level highway? i admit naging habit ko na while driving along Slex, lalo na pag mabagal yung nasa harap ko. i usually do it below 3000 rpm. sobrang lakas kasi ng hatak pag naka 3 position. also, how long can i be in the 3 mode? as long as hindi ba umaabot sa red line ng tachometer? thanks.

Hmmm... From my understanding, you really don't need to shift to 3 when overtaking with your A/T Fortuner, lalo kung level ka.

For the D4-D models, you've good torque at a wide range of RPM. In addition, when you need extra power, the turbo will kick-in to give you that added boost to overtake a slow-moving car in front of you.

I'm not so sure about the VVTi lang... But, my colleague swears by the power of his 2.7G in overtaking along the NLEX. And, he says he just stayed in D.

Totally agree! "D" lang ako palagi. I just shift to 3 during long drives tapos your on one of those long, winding, 2-lane, 2-way roads with lots of tricycles. Putting it in 3 saves me the time and trouble of having to floor the accelerator (specially when your on overtaking a series of vehicles). Kasi if I keep it in D, when I ease of the pedal, papasok na agad sya sa 4th gear, eh minsan gusto mo um-overtake ulit, kelanga mo pa i-floor ulit, so I just put it in 3 instead. Now when roads clear up, balik na ulit sa D.

yes, it almost eliminated the "TAG TAG" felt like its a different car na. i bought it sa RIDE in Banawe. Thou7+ each.

sa front i heard Rancho will be coming out soon. Old Man Emu meron na.

a friend of mine is using Rancho sa rear & only about 20% lang daw improvement.

what i can say is that i am now happy driving my V Fortuner. dati kasi medjo sakit sa katawan bec of the "TAG TAG"

    peeps,

those of you who will travel for holidays this summer, you can now avail of BIoActiv ( biodiesel ) in SLEX and NLEX Petron Gas station. Sa holy week, Petron will have base camps along roadside for their annual Petron Lakbay Alalay. Bioactiv will also be available sa mga base camps nila. Thanks

Get the gas variant if you can manage to get one. Toyota claims the line is soooooo long for this variant. Yeah right!

The 2.5 D4-D is less than ideal on a vehicle with the Fortuner's weight. Surely, the 2.5 D4-D in a Fortuner body is a bit less efficient when it comes to the power to weight ratio. A friend who has one (4x2 D4-D) says its a bit on the weak side on a recent trek up to Baguio. He has also experienced the dreaded hard starting "problem". (read the thread "Toyota D4-D Problems" for more details).
