Need help...
1.) For daily top-ups, is it alright to simply pour water directly into either the radiator or reservoir? or both?
2.) Do you pour water only directly into the radiator or the reservoir? Or is a mixture of engine coolant with water really required/mandatory even for daily top-ups?
I read in the manual that you need to mix water with engine coolant. I think this is applicable after draining the entire radiator, but is this applicable for daily top-ups? I can see the reservoir has the pinkish engine coolant inside. Also, my previous cars received daily water top-ups through the reservoir and I never opened the radiator cap ever and it worked fine for than ten years until the car was sold.
Yes, on my end (my current ride and all of past rides) I just add water, then if the color of the coolant gets lighter, than that will be the signal for me to drain it and replace with a new coolant but with a mix of water...
On my part I don't do daily top-ups on the radiator / coolant reservoir.
I will just check the coolant level every couple of weeks, if it falls below the minimum level thats the time that I will add the manufacturer's recommended coolant at the suggested ratio. IMO if you just add water daily, the coolant concentration will be altered.
Works fine on my end but then my daily drive is only 5-10 minutes & traffic-free with occasional long drives (200Kms) every other weekend.

Just a question for everybody here, what's the normal level of the temperature gauge on ur Fortuners?
Just want to share to you what I did last week...
I tried the Ro-Ro experience Manila to Iloilo... and I would say it was a good experience and I had fun ...
By the way, I saw a lot of Fortuners newly shipped at Batangas International port, dami pa rin siguro ang order and naghihintay....
I just asked a Toyota service advisor and he said its ok to add only water for daily top-ups. Accoding to him, everyday use of the coolant+water may result to a bit too concentrated solution. The coolant+water is for after draining the entire radiator.
The normal temp gauge of the Fortuner is on the half way point.
Maganda kaya mag palagay ng Side Stripes sa Fortuner?
Sa mga meron na....saan ninyo nakuha? Can you post a closeup pic.
Ito lang ang nakita ko sa Web.
You are not supposed to top up the reservoir or open the radiator cap unless you are going to service the cooling system. As long as the fluid level is between max and min, DO NOT ADD any more fluid.
BMW and Land Rover even go to the extent of putting an adhesive label to detect if the system has been opened in between servicing and to deter owners from opening the system.
My rig is now almost 9 years old and I still don't add any fluid to the cooling system. I do change the fluids at regular intervals prescribed in the manual.

As a general rule with my previous vehicles, I never tamper with the radiator and stuff. But I do top-ups through the reservoir using water only. However for the Fortuner, I noticed that even the fluids in reservoir is also the same color (pink/red) as the liquid in the radiator. The liquid (in the reservoir) also seem to expand after operating the engine and it contracts back when cooled, as the evidenced by inconsistent levels upon inspection.

I'm curious, you mentioned "DO NOT ADD any more fluid.", does this means I can treat the radiator and the reservoir like a maintenance-free battery (by never tampering with them at all)? I dont know, for my previous car, the reservoir seem to dry up in a few days of use (btw, no leaks) so I got into the habit of constantly topping-up the reservoir with water.
I guess that's the same level I have in mine... thanks for the info...Originally Posted by number001
The cooling system is not maintenance free. There is a prescribed maintenance interval for it. In between intervals, you are not supposed to mess with it.

That's what I'm told by my SA, as well. They do the top-ups during each 5000km check-up, when found necessary.Originally Posted by OTEP
Yup. That's the way its supposed to be. Daily top-ups are not necessary for newer cooling systems. Otherwise, you might be covering up an unseen problem and further diluting the coolant mix (around 50/50).
If a top up is necessary, distilled (not purified, not mineral, not spring) drinking water is recommended since it hardly has any solids in it.
Even the newly rebuilt cooling system of my 77 Benz does not require daily top ups.

Tanong lang. Meron na bang fortuner na naka harman kardon drive + play dito sa tsikot? finally getting mine on thursday :jump: and i would like to know kung saan pinadaan yung wires for the installation. thanks!
Hi sean jedi,
I took the easy way out with the harman kardon:
- control box in glove box attached with double sided tape
- controller behind the handbrake then tucked/hid the wires under the
"plastic" running to the back of the glove box -- no wires are visible
- the lcd display wires running from the top dashboard then tucked behind
the door weather strip, going under the dash and finally the glove box.
You can make it really "neat" if you're willing to drill holes
- You can drill a small hole where the controller is placed and just run
the wire under the plastic...the cover for the handbreak/transmission
is really just a big hunk of plastic which is easily removed..this eliminates
the 2 or so inches of wire that would be visible
- You can also drill a small hole on your dashboard where you prefer the
LCD to be placed then drop the wire through it.
Alternatively, attach the display to the Rear-View mirror then run
the wire through the ceiling and the door panels -- they are easily
removed and put back -- similar to what people do for backup sensors
with the display on the rear-view mirror. I'm actually planning to do
this when I get the chance.
- put the control box under the dash so you have glove box space. I only
placed it there for easy access since I'm modding the LCD to display other
info besides the HK+Ipod data.
I'm assuming you're plugging the HK to your head-unit directlyand not using the FM transmitter -- and spare yourself the bad signals.
Enjoy!
thanks! great advice. can't wait till thursday. excited na ko. will post installation pics soon!![]()
