What I mean is---If price of gasoline goes record high like 4x or more the current gasoline price, there may exist a market for prius.

However, do you think the government would allow that?

Even if the price of gasoline would rocket to 4x the current price, it wouldn't make the Prius anymore sellable except to the uninformed what a hybrid can and cannot do.

If the price of gasoline was to go back to it's previous levels, people would simply choose smaller engined cars like the Honda Jazz/City, Toyota Vios, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 and Nissan Sentra 1.3L cars. Others would opt to keep their current cars but switch to a cheaper fuel like Auto-LPG.

As I have mentioned, unless the local Prius would be selling under P1M, it will simply be a curiosity.

Prius is a stupid car. They should just release a common-rail diesel vios and it'll have better fuel economy - and far more environment friendly.

the philippines is almost totally dependent on fossil fuels in generating electricity, save for the hydroelectric and geothermal plants. so having a hybrid does not have any effect on the carbon foot print of the vehicle. it will just be relocating the CO2 from the exhaust pipe of the prius to the smoke stack of the power plant.

now if electricity is produced without burning oil and coal, if it is exclusively hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, wave, solar and even nuclear, then that is a different equation altogether. almost no carbon released into the atmosphere means zero greenhouse gas. (note: except for geothermal since there is always CO2 and SO2 from the wells, but a lot less than a coal/oil plant).

another reason the prius will not succeed in the philippines is that the philippines has one of the highest electric power costs in the world. in fact there is an impending power rate increase again. what savings can the prius offer if the price of electricity is higher than that of gasoline on a per kilometer basis?

well, hindi naman "plug-in" hybrid yung prius. It should operate independently from the power grid.

having small displacement diesels are way better than having to "learn" how to eke out the maximum mileage from a hybrid. The bigbigcar comparo between the TDCi and the Prius drove that point home...

A lot of wrong info here since you're confusing electric cars with hybrids. Hybrid cars still has an internal combustion engine to serve as both motivation and charging system for the batteries. It also uses regenerative braking to capture the kinetic energy, convert it into electricity for storage. The Prius will work with just gasoline and a good set of battery packs.... no need to connect it to the power utility.

i was referring to the prius PHV which toyota said is coming in 2009. my mistake was thinking that the PHV, the one you can plug into the grid, is what they will bring. OLD generation prius pala na hybrid lang.

So bringing the SRP down to two million is pretty cheap. Hurray!:trampoline: Filipinos got richer!
I think that the prius only runs on electricity during low-speed and uses a combustion engine during high-speed that inturn charges the battery, so no need to plug it in. But I agree that they should have just introduce a common-rail diesel car like that of the ford focus. Mas cost-efficient para sa mga pinoy

MANILA, Philippines - Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) will bring the hybrid Prius into the country next week.

The announcement came despite a notable slowdown in consumer demand which has affected the local automotive industry.

TMP vice chairman Alfred Ty in an earlier interview disclosed that they will be bringing the Prius to the Philippines.

According to Ty, there is a market for hybrid vehicles here even if these environmentally friendly cars are pricier than normal vehicles. He said they have been receiving inquiries on when Toyota will sell hybrid cars.

“We will start with the Prius first. We have a go signal for this,” Ty noted.

Ty said they have not yet determined the local price of the Prius . “There is no price range yet.” The Toyota website stated that the starting price for the 2009 Prius is $22,000 or more than P1 million.

However, the price here may differ given importation charges and various taxes which will add to the cost of the car.

Ty said they will ask for incentives from the government to at least lessen the taxes.“The government has to help. It can’t be a one way thing,” Ty said. “We would like to get subsidies but that is still in the process,” he added.

In a previous interview, TMP president Hiroshi Ito said the Prius is very costly to import very costly to import hybrid vehicles. “The government needs to give incentives.”

According to Ito, they have not formally asked the Board of Investments (BOI) for incentives but he said Toyota is willing to spearhead the move to get more perks for being environment friendly.

Even though hybrid cars are more expensive, Ito said they have been getting inquiries regarding hybrid vehicles. “There is a demand,” Ito said.

Ito said they are projecting to sell 50 units per month should Toyota finally decide to sell hybrid vehicles in the country.

Toyota said they are unable to bring hybrid cars here given the road conditions in the country. When asked about this, Ty said “things have changed.” He explained that even if the road conditions remain the same, the Prius has evolved. [SIZE="4"]The Prius that will be introduced here in the country is the third generation Prius.[/SIZE] ”The technology for this has improved.”
