In response to numerous requests of the Innova Owner's Manual (2005 Ed in PDF). I finally finished scanning it from cover to cover. My apologies for not posting it sooner due some important errands to cover first. I hope the manual will help those who doesn't possess such. Safe driving guys.

I only avoid Kennon if its been raining hard (as rocks sometimes fall on the road).

The air filter should be cleaned everytime you go in for service and then replaced every 5,000kms. Diesels are quite sensitive to clogged air filters as compared to gas units. Another filter i replace every 20,000kms is the fuel filter element; although the owners manual doesnt call for it, the original element (not the fuel filter assembly) is pretty cheap at the CASA so i just change it since its a practice that i do with all our cars before.

Now that the topic on the foul smelling AC was brought up, i do recall that my wife was complaining about a palengke smell when i start up the AC on some mornings in our Altis. I thought it was mainly because of the trapo i used to wipe the interior at times.
Vinj, hindi ba baliktad? The fuel filter element replaced every 5K km or every oil change interval (at least using mineral oil) and the Air Filter, every 20K km?

Might be driving style nga. My innova was just a month old when I took it to Baguio fully loaded with 6 adults (myself included) and two kids. I was overtaken by a toyota tamaraw fx diesel (umuusok ng itim!!) loaded also.

Just been to casa to claim warranty for my fuel tank with huge mysterious dent just beneath the front strap.

Culprit of the Innova gas tank warp/leak was the filler cap, they disassembled the filler cap with me watching and viola!!! the air breather was clogged with soot like dirt that forms like a solid charcoal. They clean the filler cap's breather filter and vacuum buildup inside the tank was gone.

Evidently, Toyota knows this problem but no recall was done for the "FAULTY FILLER CAP DESIGN!!!". Newer Innova 2009 now has new design filler cap with larger breather holes and much more breather holes than its predecessor.

So if, you have older versions of Innova, Fortuner or Hilux be very cautious that one day your fuel filler cap's breather will get clogged and this will damage your fuel tank. While I was at the dealer's service area I notice another gas tank on the working table and when I look at it has the same large dent spot and same leak point (just beneath the front gas tank strap which is the weakest point).

Negative pressure builds up and thereby sucking the gas tank floor inward, and when the negative pressure is gone or when the car's engine is off for some time the gas tank floor will push back to its orginal form. The constant flippping inward and flipping outward of the gas tank will eventually crack open the corner bend just beneath the position of the front gas tank strap.

the would be or the current 2009 owners will have peace of mind.

Well, time will tell if the new design fuel filler cap will sustain road dirt and smogs that will accumulate in the fuel filler caps' filter.

I was just wondering why, this fuel filler cap maintenance is not included in the supposed Periodic Maintenance Schedule and was not even recommended by any dealer or any Toyota Service Advisor

Is there any such thing other than the Owner's Manual? in which the Periodical Maintenance services (PMS) schedule is incorporated within. If there is such in separate booklet issued after 2005 models, I'm afraid I don't have it.

    * Mile2 what does this filler cap looks like? And the breather? Mine is 2005 and my tank is still intact. As far as I recall sometime during 2005, the dealer just replaced the substandard tank strap and that's it.

I don't really know if Service Manuals are available for automobiles. If they are, which I would assume so for the sake of the dealer's technicians, then the dealer would not give them freely or are not allowed at all. When this was asked by someone, I thought that maybe this would really be available within the forumers. Just asking anyway.

Eto yung takip ng Fuel port natin (eto yung pinipihit ng mga gasoline boys para malagyan ng fuel ang tank), yung filler cap is two parts (the black plastic and the white inner plastic), naka snap lang yung white part sa black part, pag pinaghiwalay mo sila makikita sa loob yung filter and the breather. The small circular plastic mesh filter is removable, if you remove the filter...surely you'll find a charcoal looking grime blocking the breather hole. The breather hole should be always clean, but the problem was the breather hole was so small that in less time it will get blocked by road dirt and smogs/soot.

Ah ok. I thought meron pang iba, since unit acquisition, I never encountered any deformation on my tank. If such is the case that the clogging of the breather is the main culprit of tank deformation, I too am wondering why the dealers never included checking/inspection of it during PMS. It isn't, as well, never mentioned any in the manual's maintenance.

Same place where our innova was dented 3 times...

Did they replace your charcoal canister... Yung nasa right side ng engine bay when facing your innova? According dun sa SA na nakausap ko when there is a gas tank leak/dent they also replace the charcoal canister and the filler cap... Try to claim it under warranty or thru insurance coz I think the canister is about 7 to 8K...

    Hi to all Innova owners/forumers,

Ganda ng post ni sir Mile2, one concern ko lang is that could that phenomenon or defect contibute or trigger the larger problem being encountered by the D4D type Innovas?! I pressume na diesel engine yung kay sir Mile2 or assuming na ganito din yung nagyayari sa mga naka diesel engine-innova. Definitely kung nagkakaroon ng vaccuum sa tank, our fuel pumps will be working on a different condition (higher suction pressure) which is nor supposed to be, kung patuloy sa ganitong situation ang operation ng innova natin definitely it would stess out the fuel pump & fuel system. Could it be that this "thing" causes the dreaded "black smoke problem"!!!!!!

Pa request naman sir Mile2 ng pictures kung aling yung dapat natin linisin sa filler caps natin in oreder to avoid the "tank vacuum problem".

I hope that more of us share this idea & avoid the "tank vacuum problem" and hopefully help avoid the "black smoke problem".....

Good day & safe driving to all

I'm still in the process of fighting it out claiming warranty, I am collecting data and pictures to be included in my formal complaints to whoever can help me like DTI. TMP is claiming that my replaced gas tank was already over a year old and they denied my warranty request according to my SA, but the mere fact that the replaced gas tank was paid by me through insurance to restore the integrity of my car is still no reason for them to deny my claim, for I am claiming warranty on behalf of the faulty filler port design. I just don't know if my dealer can again debate this with TMP, my dealer assured me that they would re-appeal our request to TMP. I should have not pay previously on insurance claim and they (TMP) should reimburse me, for the fact that the previous gas tank deformation was not due to accident but was due to "faulty filler cap design". Prior to my second gas tank deformation, I have already installed skid plates and tank cage and my dealer saw this when they lift the car, the gas tank cage is very intact and no sign of deformation which is 2 inches away from the gas tank floor, but the gas tank is deformed like is was sucked inward.

The Dealer tested my charcoal canister and it was still within the specified specification, so the culprit was zeroed in to the "FAULTY FILLER CAP Design". As an immediate remedy, my dealer removes the small filter in the gas filler cap.

Your filler cap could still breathe from its diaphragm, but how can we know if someday the inlet pores could get clogged?, when it was not included in the regular PMS nor any written/oral advise don't exist!

Maybe you're pertaining to the oil filter. Pag oil filter every change oil (or inbetween 5,000kms takes when your on synth oil and extending the drain period). The fuel filter of the diesel, when i looked over the manual, did not call for any replacement interval, thats why i just changed the element every 20K as with the air filter.

Try to check the fuel element every 5k kasi mabilis talagang dumumi. My SA advised me to change it every 10K. As with the replacement of air filter, i believe it is specified in the manual.
