same here, mine is also a vvti and i also experience that sound. it must be the compressor since that some only occurs when the aircon is turned on...aside from the sound, any other thing seems normal...

Came back from my trip up north using a D4D Innova. I must say, i am impressed. Driving for long distances was ok. Suspension was stiff but i was expecting worst so it was surprisingly pleasant. If I was overtaking and have to downshift, it seems that the engine was having a hard time working with the gearbox in bringng the car up to speed, but when in 5th gear and running at 100kph, it was so quick for it to bring it to 120+kph.

I was surprised because it was effortless to bring it up to 150kph in SCTEX, then suddenly another Innova (the VVTI variant) zipped right by as if I was stationary.

Had a hard time with steering wheel though, had a hard time looking for a comfortable position for the long trip. According to my passengers, The third row seat was extremely uncomfortable for long trips.

Braking was very responsive. Was confused though most of the time if it was in 3rd or 5th gear as they looked very similar in position. Overall, the ride was ok.

"tik, tok, tik, tok" Yep, it's the compressor engaging. I dunno why it switches twice.

I think its better to switch off aircon upon shut down of engine. So that during cold starts it will lessen the burden on the engine since it will not have to start the compressor immediately.

The seating position is typical with any entry level Toyota, especially if you're used to the seating positions of Nissans, Hondas, etc...

    Hi Guys,

Need your advice on this one, heard a lot of problems with Toyota's D4D engine but friends are telling me that it is still a better buy than the Gas variant.Personally, im torn between the two. Here are the requirements

Planning to get an Innova, choices
    1.) 05 Diesel E Variant Manual 35,000KM
    2.) 06 Gas G Variant Matic 51,000KM

What will last longer? Preferably til 2015
Is there a big difference with the km/liter average?
    Which is easier to maintain?
Does the Innova have underchassis/performance issues?

Car will be used for only 3 times a week (2 codings and 1 Sunday)

    Hoping for your advice

Yep, I switch the A/C off before switching the engine off. And I don't start the engine up with the A/C on. My old habit...

I think the compressor engaging noise during switching at cold start is normal...

i switch off my a/c before i turn off the engine. and i make sure my a/c and other accessories are off before starting the engine. however during cold startups, after 10-15secs or so, when i turn on the a/c it makes a "tik tok tik tok" sound, it seems the compressor is having a hard time engaging in a cold engine.kinda like on, off, on, off sound. however when the engine reaches optimal operating temp (temp gauge a little over 1/4) , turning on the a/c only elicits a "tik" sound coming from the compressor. before i think there is something wrong with the a/c compressor but since other guys here are also experiencing the same, im inclined to think that the sound is normal, however on my other vehicles, whether cold startups or on normal operating temp, turning on the a/c, you will only heart a simple "tik" sound

Pay insurance participation fee, kung mags and tire yung nawala mas maganda ipasok mo sa insurance, just prepare affidavit.

Kung steel and tires yung nawala baka mas mura pa second hand sa Evangelista kaysa participation fee. Tignan mo na lang kung saan ka makakamura participation fee or second hand.

Me I don't turn off/on the aircon when turning on/off the engine. I let the aircon stay on all the time ever since it was delivered to me. This was my practice even with my 11 year old Lancer. I don't want to wear off my aircon switch by doing on/off, even my 2nd row aircon it stays on, all the time.

Wala naman daw masama pag iniiwang naka-on ang A/C. May nagbanggit sa ibang section ng Tsikot na hindi masama naka-on ang A/C pag start ng makina. Myth lang daw ika nga. Yun nga lang, old habit, di kasi ako agad naka-A/C pag malamig ang makina. Kadalasan kasi malamig ang panahon pag nilalabas ko yung auto. Tsaka mas masarap manakbo pag patay ang compressor. Hehehehehe...

As bro mile2 advised compare how much you'll gonna shell out for the insurance part fee as against a new or 2nd hand tire. Scout for the tire at either evangelista or banawe. This time do not forget to include in your wishlist the tire lock. The "akala" issue has always been unacceptable. Good luck!

I have a bias opinion....get the VVti and you won't regret it, the VVTi Innova is known for worry free engine. It may cost you more on fuel cost but saves you from worrying for years and your target of 7 years ownership is highly achievable with no doubt!

Well I have to agree with Sir Mile, vvti is worry free. I have one. I got it with 40km on odo, 2005 G M/T. No problem thus far and runs like new. Or maybe because the former owner took care of it well. I average around 8-9 km/li pure city driving with aircon. And the FC is getting better cause I'm learning the right gear shift.

Just an update, had my 40km PMS in Toyota Shaw this morning and it cost me P5,930.59, as follows:

    Labor P1,275.00
    Replace all fluids 900.00
    Brake fluid 237.54
    SLLC 2 ltr 722.73
    Transmision fluid 268.18
    M/T gear oil 638.07
    Diff gear oil 432.98
    Misc. 133.93
    Sand paper 20.36
    Fuel treatment 530.00
    Brake cleaner 136.17
    plus 12% VAT
    Total: 5,930.59

brake pads, change oil, air filter and oil filter not included. just had it done outside cost me around P5K.

People from TS said I need not replace my fuel filter.

I will get my unit this 11am.

Using the car for only 3 days in a week?, settle for the gas variant. The diesel variant is supposed to provide you with a better operating cost (fuel expenses) in the long term, but not when you will use it sparingly.

Tumpak. The diesel variant costs more and it won't be a tradeoff when it'll be used only occasionally. It's also more costly to maintain.

You may want to back read here, some D4d owner experience a sound like a boiling kettle or something like gas escaping sound.
I brought it to toyota last saturday afternoon. It did sound like a whistling kettle and not the 'tik' tok' thing. The SA told me it was not the compressor but more like an alternator-related thing. He suggested that I should allowed them to investigate further. He told me toyota had a 'stetoscope-like' thing that they may use to diagnose my unit. Since I cannot leave my unit for that whole day, I may be back on tomorrow or Thursday. The SA told me that the fee is more or less php400.

I think the fee is only for the check-up. I hope you can share the outcome after the check-up. By the way if it is an alternator-related problem then you should it to casa right away, it might affet other related parts of the vehicle...just me...
