    4 more showing symptoms...

Coronavirus Updates: Infection May Have Spread Through Hong Kong Building’s Pipes - The New York Times

Hong Kong officials evacuated and quarantined dozens of residents of an apartment building after two people living on different floors were found to be infected with the coronavirus, the authorities said on Tuesday.

The two cases appeared to suggest that the virus had spread through the building, perhaps through a pipe, raising new fears about the virus’s ability to spread.

Officials from the city’s Center for Health Protection said the decision to partially evacuate the building was made after the discovery of a unsealed bathroom pipe in the apartment of a newly confirmed patient, a 62-year-old woman. She lives 10 ten floors below a resident who was earlier found to be infected.

In addition to the infected residents, four other people living in three different units displayed symptoms of the coronavirus, according to Sophia Chan, Hong Kong’s health secretary.

IDC on China smartphone outlook 2020, impact of coronavirus outbreak

China’s smartphone shipments for the three months ending in March could decline by more than 30% from the same period a year ago, International Data Corporation said on Tuesday.

The virus outbreak will also “create uncertainty in product launch plans, the supply chain, and distribution channels, in the mid and long term,” IDC said.

Research firm Canalys earlier this month predicted smartphone shipments in China could drop by as much as 50% for the first quarter.

The world’s largest smartphone market could experience a so-called “Black Swan effect” in the first half of the calendar year due to the new coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 1,000 people on the mainland, according to the research firm.

A black swan is said to be a rare, unpredictable event with potentially severe consequences.

Coronavirus: Turn off air-conditioners and open windows to reduce risk of being infected, say experts | The Straits Times
    Audrey Tan
    Feb. 10 2020

SINGAPORE - On top of washing their hands and disinfecting surfaces, people need to switch off the air-conditioner, turn on the fan and get fresh air to reduce the chances of getting infected by the novel coronavirus.

The reason is that while many unknowns remain about the virus, earlier studies have shown that viruses thrive better in cool, dry climates.

That would make tropical Singapore, with its hot and tropical weather, less conducive for the virus to thrive.

This "good news" for Singapore was delivered on Monday (Feb 10) by the Ministry of Health's (MOH) chief health scientist, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, at a press conference.

"The likelihood of viral persistence outdoors is lower," he said, as he noted the prevalent use of air-conditioning in Singapore.

Prof Tan was one of eight infectious disease experts in Singapore present at the press conference to brief the media on what is being done to fight the virus, or 2019-nCoV, on both the science and health fronts.

OB was right when he said, "the virus cant survive tropical"?

I never liked AC because the air feels artificial, at home I don't use AC or fan, it's just passive cooling. Even when we eat out, I don't mind outdoor seating but most of my family and friends like it indoors (esp guys mainitin)

Pero sa kotse I will die without AC saka feeling ko babaho interior ng auto with Manila air

49 positive cases... biggest outside of China and the Cruise liner in Japan

Coronavirus: seven more cases confirmed in Hong Kong, taking city’s total number to 49 | South China Morning Post

The Centre for Health Protection’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said on Tuesday one of the new cases was connected to a shared family hotpot meal during Lunar New Year while three more were related to the 42nd case, who lives in Hong Mei House in Tsing Yi’s Cheung Hong Estate.

The woman’s son and his wife who lived in the same flat, as well as the son’s wife’s father, were all infected.

“They had some gatherings and activities during Lunar New Year, but no travel history,” Chuang said.

Here's a blow by blow blog of an American board on a quarantined cruise in Japan.

Interesting to see the life of a quarantined person.
