dr.d, I mean most here assumes those DOH tallies are quite conservative. We hear news na mga crematoriums are working 24 hrs. na, and frontliners are getting overwhelmed. Then we read rumours pa na mga namamatay na derecho cremation na without being classified whether normal death, or Covid-related case? So, we need reassurance about the real situation and the true numbers right now, and Igan just voiced out the concerns of many. We might say he's being proactive even, as sooner or later mag-viral din yung mga rumours na yun.

What's the real killer?

Doctors on the ground report that severe cases don’t develop a high “viral load” (concentration of virus) but a cytokine storm syndrome.

“The cytokine storm is a problem we face quite often in intensive care” says Rafael Máñez, head of intensive care unit at Bellvitge Hospital, also close to Barcelona. Other infections and even some drugs can trigger it. “The problem is that we don’t have a treatment, neither against the virus nor for the inflammatory response” Máñez tells Euronews. “We only have supportive treatments, to protect the patient's vital organs”. Doctors use respirators, or drugs to control blood pressure or corticoids to reduce inflammation.

Another lead is using drugs to block interlukin-6, a pro-inflammatory cytokine produced by the immune system.

He says cytokine storms do happen during the flu season, but patients admissions are gradual. “Due to the exceptional infection rates of COVID-19 we get more patients than we can manage".

Máñez highlights a nuance in the consensus that having strong defences are better to cope with the disease "you don’t need a strong immune system but a balanced one” he states.

Dr. Paredes is leading a clinical study in cooperation with the US National Institute of Health using remdesivir. It will take three years.

even before covid, marami talagang namamatay araw-araw sa big, tertiary government hospitals.
this is not so much a reflection of the hospitals' in-capabilities, but, in my opinion, more of the patients' "already morbid situation upon consult".

todays, while it may be true that there are people dying because of covid, some folks may be mistakenly thinking that all hospital deaths now are covid-related, which is simply not true. majority of the deaths are still the ordinary non-covid deaths that they used to get.

bodies piling up in the hospital morgues?
perhaps it is because the relatives can not tubos their dead relatives, because of financial constraints, what with the lockdown.

Just as what doc said in his post, many deaths in hospitals were not always covid related. If there is such an order from DOH, it could only be to ask caution in categorizing covid deaths from non-covid deaths.
