CDC cuts recommended isolation and quarantine time after coronavirus exposure : Coronavirus Updates : NPR

    Susunod kaya tayo?

People who test positive for the coronavirus need to isolate themselves for only five days if they don't show symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. This cuts in half the earlier recommendation of 10 days of isolation.

Data shows that the majority of coronavirus transmission "occurs early in the course of illness," the CDC explained — generally in the one or two days before symptoms begin and two or three days after.

"Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others," the CDC said in a statement.

The CDC has also updated its recommended quarantine period for people exposed to the virus. It says unvaccinated people should quarantine for five days, followed by five days of "strict mask use." Exposed people who are more than six months past their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or two months out from a Johnson & Johnson vaccine, should also quarantine for five days.

People who have gotten their booster shot don't need to quarantine after exposure but should wear a mask for the next 10 days.

"The Omicron variant is spreading quickly and has the potential to impact all facets of our society," said the CDC's director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, in a statement. "CDC's updated recommendations for isolation and quarantine balance what we know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided by vaccination and booster doses. These updates ensure people can safely continue their daily lives."

Omicron is “not the same disease we were seeing a year ago” and high Covid death rates in the UK are “now history”, a leading immunologist has said.

Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University and the UK government’s life sciences adviser, said that although hospitalisations had increased in recent weeks as Omicron spreads through the population, the disease “appears to be less severe and many people spend a relatively short time in hospital”.

Fewer patients were needing high-flow oxygen and the average length of stay was down to three days, he said.

Registered last Sunday and got my sked on Monday.

Had my booster this morning at NPF drive through. Took 2 hours to finally get vaxxed. Mas matagal ang waiting for boosters for obvious reasons...

Only good di na susunod yung schedule. So be early regardless what time you're supposed to be there

South African Covid cases fall by nearly 40 per cent in a week

The seven day rolling average for new infections plummeted by 35 per cent from an all-time high of 23,000 nine days ago to 15,000 on Monday.

While the new data must be taken with caution because of the Christmas migration of millions of people from the commercial capital Johannesburg to rural areas where there are fewer medical facilities, experts say it is clear that the country has passed its omicron peak with “substantially lower” death rates than with the delta variant.

However, experts have warned against extrapolating South Africa’s omicron data to their own countries because of the high levels of immunity in the South African population due to devastating beta and delta variant waves.

"We should interpret the data from South Africa with a lot of caution," John Nkengasong, director of the Africa CDC, said. ”This is early days and public health practice is local."

Considering surges come and go in 2-3 months

France recommends COVID-19 booster jab 3 months after initial vaccines - CNA

It justified the cut to three months by citing studies showing that vaccines are 80 per cent effective for one to two months against the non-serious symptomatic forms of the Omicron variant, but lose their effectiveness more quickly than with the previous variants.

The effectiveness falls to just 34 per cent four months after vaccination with the Pfizer vaccine, but the efficacy rose to 75 per cent two weeks after a booster dose, it said.
Booster shot can be given after 3 months for all vaccines, says KJ

He said that “strong evidence” collected over the past three weeks indicates that booster shots may increase protection against the Omicron variant, adding that initial results of a study of 21 million booster doses administered in the United Kingdom has shown “very convincing” results.

He added that the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) has conducted PCR genotyping assay tests on 366 samples of Covid-19 positive cases among travellers from Dec 21-25, with 306 of that number likely to be of the Omicron variant.

    let us still be careful.
kasi, "not all viruses have read the edict" (or the textbook).
'tis a favorite quote of our infectious disease teacher.

I'm so happy, my friend called me, negative daw siya sa retest ng saliva! Nagfa false positive pala ang saliva?

Anyway, may binebenta bang Binax Now (home test kit) sa Pilipinas?

^Yeah kahit dito yata may false result ang saliva.

AFAIK Roche ang brand ng antigen widely used by clinics here. Pero wala pa ko nabili self-testing kit.

    i wonder,
how many of these positives are vaccinated, had booster, or are fully un-vaccinated?
    also, what's the age distribution?

i don't understand why people still think vaccinated people can't be infected

when you inhale the virus it will attach to your ACE2 receptors regardless if you're vaccinated or not

    -

the swab will pick up the virus in your nose even if you're vaccinated

    you'll test positive
