Omicron multiplies 70 times faster in the airways than delta yet replicates 10 times more slowly in the lungs, which may explain why it is very transmissible but less severe, scientists have said.

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong studied how quickly the virus replicates in bronchial and lung tissue in the lab.

They discovered that the virus was capable of replicating far faster in the bronchus - the tubes that attach the windpipe to the lungs - with more infection present after just 24 hours than delta produced after two days.

However, the research showed the virus struggled to reproduce efficiently in lung tissue, which may explain why people are experiencing cold-like symptoms, but few cases are progressing to serious disease.

He adds the VEP is expected to issue its recommendation next week.

A group of seven German visitors to Cape Town, aged between 25 and 39, were infected at some point in late November or early December with confirmed cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant. A copy of the study seen by Reuters said they all suffered only mild to moderate symptoms and none required hospitalisation.

Of the group, six were fully vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech (PFE.N) vaccine, of whom five had also had a booster Pfizer shot while the sixth had received a booster dose of the Moderna (MRNA.O) vaccine.

A seventh had received an initial dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine (AZN.L), followed by a second and then third booster dose of Pfizer. None had reported past infection with COVID-19.

The infections occurred between one and two months after receipt of the booster shot.

US panel recommends J&J shots be sidelined after clot deaths - BBC News

A panel of US experts has voted unanimously to recommend the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines over Johnson & Johnson's, which has been linked to deadly side effects.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 57 J&J patients have developed a rare blood clot disorder.

Nine people are known so far to have died: seven women and two men.

A total of 16 million US residents have received the single-dose J&J vaccine.

On Thursday, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that the J&J vaccine be reserved for cases where patients are unable or unwilling to receive the more widely available Pfizer and Moderna jabs.

The CDC must still decide whether to accept the panel's recommendation.

i saw a scientific article that shows that using a face shield has an added protective effect.
it's not based on theory, but on actual data.
medyo maliit the added advantage, but it's there, nevertheless.
that's why i do not criticize the face shield too much.
i wish i can post it here, but i seem to have misplaced it.

i believe the wind engineer's evidence is based on theory only?

These Vaccines are Less Effective Against Omicron -MSN NEWS

COVID-19 vaccines from U.S. drugmaker Johnson & Johnson and China's Sinopharm, as well as Russia's Sputnik V shot, had no neutralizing activity against the Omicron variant, according to a study that has not yet been peer-reviewed.

The study – conducted by Humabs Biomed SA, a unit of Vir Biotechnology, and the University of Washington, among others – compared the activity of some widely-used COVID-19 vaccines and treatments against Omicron and against the original virus strain first detected in China.

Vaccines from Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and partner BioNTech retained activity against Omicron, but the antibody response was greatly reduced when compared with the original strain, the study found.

It also found the decrease was less pronounced for vaccinated individuals who were previously infected.
