Also, My Toshiba laptop has a dualcore 1.8ghz Turion X2 cpu with 2gb ram and a crappy ATI X1200 for video. It should be in the same range as a 1.6ghz Core Duo or just slightly quicker.

Once the slow hard drive settled down, Windows 7 RC was fine. It's that 4200rpm hard drive that drove me nuts (until I put XP on which was light enough to yield satisfactory speeds).

On an unrelated note..... If you like to easily replace stuff in a laptop yourself, don't buy a Toshiba. Replacing a hard drive require tearing the laptop apart.

I plan to install Win7 on my netbook using the 250gb hdd. It's currently upgraded with a 500gb wd hdd. Just looking when I have the time to spare, I expect half a day including tinkering time and apps install.

Some people have been running Windows 7 on their netbooks with Intel Atom CPU and Intel950 graphics. Runs well enough based on their reports.

Just upgrade to more RAM.

So long as the hard drive is decent in addition to more ram. The hard drive in my Toshiba is a 4200rpm SATA Fujitsu. It's waaay better than a 4200rpm IDE hard drive. It's not even close, actually. But, it still lags a lot compared to 5400rpm and 7200rpm SATA laptop drives with Vista.

I'm just complaining because my expectations with multicore laptops have greatly increased.

Not sure how much is it there. But, the prices here (newegg) is outragous.

I decided to buy the 64-bit Windows 7 1-Pack for System Builders. It's $107 and cheaper than the rest. It's a full version too. The only drawback is once I install it on my new pc, it's forever associated with that pc. No transfer to a different pc.

I have seen on youtube, people installing Windows 7 on P!!! 550 Mhz to Athlon XP 1700+. Windows 7 is not as big and bloated as Vista. It will definitely work on the Core Duo processor. The key here is to find the right compatible drivers esp. for the video card, sata raid, sounds, lan, etc...

I installed Win7 (x86 and x64) Ultimate on my AMD 64 3200+, 2 gb ddr400, etc..desktop and it is definitely much faster than Vista! The x64 version feels more sluggish than the x86. I also have a driver problem in x64 while non in x86. I guess its also bec. its a ULI chip (now a defunct company).

Windows 7 works satisfactorily on netbooks. Maybe not XP quick, but it won't drive you nuts like Vista did. Satisfactorily because netbooks aren't built to provide commendable levels of performance.

On pre-RTM builds of W7 though, battery life isn't spectacular, but the RTM build provides battery life in the same league as an XP machine.

My Asus Eee 1005HA is running Windows 7 now and no problem so far. I'm very satisfied and pretty much happy. The only thing I haven't done is re-install my Super Hybrid Engine to my Eee, it's telling me to update my bios first. As far as performance, I don't see any performance lag (even if Aero glass is enabled) compared to when it was on XP.

It's probably because the minimum ram requirements for 64-bit Windows 7 is 2gb versus 1gb for the 32-bit version.

Anyway, if someone installs the retail Windows 7 on a laptop with a slow 4200rpm drive, post the performance here. I'm still tentative about buying it for my Toshiba. Perhaps the retail Windows 7 has been further optimized compared to RC1.

I have the professional version installed on an atom 1.6 ghz machine, 1gb ram, and 20GB ide drive that is a relic from my old computer. Its running fine without any issues. but my kids just use it for chat, type, and simple 2d games. Works well. So it depends parin kung saan mo gagamitin.

From what I read before, it works pretty much as is without additional drivers.

this will check your current setup / drivers if it is compatible in win 7 so that you can do the preparation before starting to format.

That's not always the case. My Compaq M2000 is supposed to be underpowered for Win7 as indicated on the Upgrade Advisor's specs. But now I'm running RC build 7100 for 5 months with no problems. Not even BSOD!

It can't even run Vista decently!!! It's far from the speed of Win7 on my P4 desktop (3GHz, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 8500GT), but heck, it's more stable than XP. I'd take stability over speed anytime.

As far as drivers....... The very newest hardware will always require a driver disc or download since there's no time to add them to the OS dvd. That's just the way it is.

I did test Windows 7 RC on my 2005-era Athlon X2 4200+/GF 8600GT or ATI X800XL pc. Windows update found all the drivers on the first try including the printer/scanner/twain drivers for my HP C4100 All In One printer.

I'd imagine hardware support have improved since.

Plus, worse comes to worse, Vista drivers should work with Windows 7 which is what I used when I tested Windows 7 RC on my Toshiba laptop.

Congrats! I agree, can't seem to tell the difference (in terms of speed) from XP to 7. Using Windows 7 Home Premium on my Asus Eee
* tidius1203, did you re-install Super Hybrid Engine on your Eee? if so, I can only assume you also updated your bios in order for it to work. Pls let me know.
