what asean allies? SEATO has been dead for many decades already. ASEAN is not a military alliance nor do we have any defence arrangements with any of them. we have "talks" with vietnam and indonesia about joint patrols but there are no treaties that say we share logistics and intelligence.

The countries in Southeast Asia who are concerned with China's growing influence in the South China Sea will have to band together sooner or later unless they have no problems with the region becoming a Chinese pond.

If not, then the PH will be in a tight spot. Being non-aligned requires a lot of effort and delicate decisions. The PH may have to make a pact with China to avoid trouble. That's not bad in itself. But, it would be disastrous to the US and the US government will have only itself to blame.

Cigarettes were taxed higher recently. Did it reduce the number of smokers or did it changed their habit? I don't have the numbers but I see a similar number of smokers around.

soft drinks. it probably won't diminish the number of lying mandaraya-betics, but it will raise the cash.
fossil fuels. it might even decrease traffic!
rice. but give the farmer their cut.
