Both the Pajero and Montero sport uses a hydraulic power steering system.
The steering system of the Montero is rack and pinion. Same as in most road cars. Offers better steering feel, simpler to build, costs less. But less robust under adverse conditions (e.g. off road driving, fitment of bigger than stock tires, etc.).
Pajero uses a recirculating ball (aka worm and gear or worm and nut) system which offers poorer road feel, is more expensive to build but is tougher and is commonly used on trucks and heavy duty vehicles.
Steering effort is more a product of the power steering asssist system and not of the steering gear design.

Thanks to all posts here. Been reading the past couple of weeks here and yesterday afternoon, already ordered a black 4x2 GLS-V.
This vehicle represents a lots of "firsts" for me:
1. My first Mitsubishi. I hope I won't be disappointed, after coming from Toyotas, Nissans, Isuzu, and Suzuki - both cars and SUVs.
2. My first diesel. I've finally had it with the oil price hikes these past few months. This has been burning a hole in my pocket like there's no tomorrow.
3. My first SUV that is a 4x2 and not a true 4X4. I have 3 true SUVs with real low range. Never aspired for softroaders or crossovers. Ironically, I've never encountered road conditions or weather which compelled me to use my 4x4 in all 3 SUVS. Yeah, what a waste. So I figured, this time, might as well get the GLS-V 4x2 and maximize mileage since the 4x2 will be more economical.
4. My first SUV that is pickup-based. My other three are not based on pickups. I'm not so worried about the Montero Sport being pickup based since it is ladder chassis based and all my 3 SUVs are ladder chassis based as well.
I test drove the latest Everest and the aircon vents on the 2nd and 3rd row trumps the Montero Sport's AC. Downside is stiff ride, only marginally better than the Fortuner. Plus the biggest setback from what I gather if the thirsty Duratorq engine. That would be a step back for me. Liked the 18" mags though.
Never even test drove the Fortuner 4x2. Their 4x2 diesel is a joke - 0-100kph is 7.5 .....days.. Don't want to ruffle feathers, but the Fortuner design never appealed to me. I'm in my early 40's. Does that mean I'm too old to appreciate it's design
? Moreover, that legendary cart-like ride is a major handicap. I've tried the Fortuners of some friends - about a hundred of them
. . . . Kidding aside, I see a Fortuner on the road every millisecond. They're everywhere. If you want to be anonymous and Mr. Everyman, the Fortuner is it for you. Maybe on its next incarnation, when we're in the market again.
Finally got to test drive the Montero Sport the other day - unfortunately, the test unit was an old 4x2, not the new VGT model GLS-V model. Drove it on the Skyway for about 10 kilometers. Did notice the turbo lag, but this was the old model, so I'm expecting no lag in the new one. The ride was firm but supple enough for me. Engine noise was surprisingly acceptable. AC at setting 2 on the blower was sufficiently cool.
I am excited about the prospect of finally getting more than 3km/liter from a full size SUV on city driving and a paltry 5-6 on the highway. The best I've gotten on my smaller gas 4x4 was about 8 on pure highway driving. I've always wondered what it would be like have a diesel SUV. Hope I won't be let down with this first diesel SUV.
The biggest clincher for me was the MID head unit with GPS and iPod integration. I've installed Pioneer DVD head units with direct iPod integration and touch screen direct iPod interface controls on two vehicles I use and there is just no going back with other ways of connecting.
Never in a long time have I been this enthralled about a new vehicle, and this is because of all I learned in this thread the past two weeks. Again, thanks to all who posted here for generously sharing your thoughts and experiences!![]()
When I test drove the old GLS MS its the same as the old tucson that requires 2 hands sometimes in order to properly turn maneuver without the chances of slippage.
Your SA is either scaring you away or he/she knows nothing. IMO find another dealer, or talk to the accessories shop inside the casa, or you could also buy the europa out of casa like winterpine warranty will be voided only for the horns. And I think if the installation is done perfectly then you wouldn't have any problems at all.
Monty VGT 2x4 and 4x4 owners... please share your average Fuel Consumption on your unit, it may vary from your driving style, but still any information's better than nothing. I was just wondering if it has a huge difference in FC compared to the 2010 model. Thanks

yes sir done that. i properly adjust my seats specially when driving at mountain roads. there is really a big difference on the stiffness of the steering, comparing to our strada, mas magaan sir ang steering. very nice in driving around the city and small streets, but not that fun to drive at mountain roads, unlike the montero its the other way around. i can't explain why is that,(mechanism or ....dunno) pero both happy for it.
Drove our co-employee's GTV Montero lunchtime yesterday. Ride was bought also at Diamond Motors Valle Verde....
Some observations:
1. Ride is not as stiff as Fortuner
2. Forward visibility is way better than Fortuner
3. There is a noticeable turbo lag (hesitation) when accelerating. After that, smooth all the way
4. Brake is too soft for my taste. Parang hindi titigil....
5. Steering is a bit heavy

Congrats to all who will own the new Monty GLS-V or GT-V. Just a question sirs. is the price difference between the GLS-V and GT-V worth it? lets say i don't need 4x4, is the climate control, leather seats, power seats, 5 speed with paddle shifts, carbon fiber finish spoiler (which i don't care also), headlamp washer, wood trimmings. actually sa 5 speed with paddle shifts ang medyo hahabulin ko, pero looking at the gear ratios of the 5 speed and the 4 speed INVECS II there is not that much of a difference (correct if I'm wrong) 1-3 gear may slight edge ung 5 speed but 4-5 there is no big difference.
and lastly, may nagtanung na po ba if the paddle shifter can be installed on our old monty? i think sa thailand pwede daw... i red it somewhere here in this thread.
