Ok..went to a local Kia Showroom today and asked around for the new 2007 Kia Sorento. When I asked the saleslady about VGT, she said "what?" She then pointed to a black Sorento displayed and told me that's the newest model they have...2007 model.

Indeed it was! Different exterior than the previous versions - new front & rear bumpers, new grill & projection type headlamps. But when I opened the hood, it was the same old CRDi engine - 140ps. The manager told me they are not going to release the VGT version here in our shores this year. I guess if they do, it would directly compete with their sister Hyundai Santa Fe.

Checked the interior - no passenger & side airbags, no cruise control, no sunroof, no rear sensors and the price is 1.488M!

However, they have a promo which is good till this day only - May 31,2007. Free 3M tint, floor matting, seat cover, freight & handling, comprehensive insurance, 3yrs LTO registration & 3yrs warranty.

They also said they are not offering anymore variants other than the 2.5L CRDi Diesel 4x4. Wala ng 4x2 variant? Btw, can't seem to find in the new brochure or in the local website that it has ABS w/ EBD?

What do you think guys? Go or no go???

There was never a 4x2 variant for the local market. All Sorentos came equipped with a knob operated Borg-Warner part-time 4x4 system.

Formerly, the Sorento was available in EX V6, LX CRDi, and EX CRDi models (M/T or A/T). This has since been simplified by only offering one model. The EX CRDi 4x4 with 5 speed A/T (with manual override).

VGT has never been offered in the local market. But the fixed geometry turbo offered does have enough power to drive the Sorento. Consider that the Fortuner 2.5 D4d only makes 102bhp and has to flow power through only a conventional 4 speed A/T. There is no known major issue against the Sorento's engine in all the years that it has been offered in the market.

Can't confirm or deny the presence of ABS. I couldn't find an ABS pump when I peered under the hood.

Mahirap na tanong yan, go or no go ..hehehe. Depende kasi yan kung talagang gusto mo siya. Ako kasi gusto ko Sorento talaga una ko pa lang nakita sold sa states. I'm very happy with my Sorento and never had problems with it 3 years now I've owned it. Performance wise, malakas at mabilis talaga sya. Masarap ihataw. Para sa akin, it's bang for my buck talaga ang Sorento and I'm sure you won't regret it if ever na siya maging choice mo. Good luck!

the new sorento daw has upgraded suspension settings. baka totoo to kase iba ang rear shocks mounting ng new sorento compared to the previous model. and yes capable na capable ang engine ng sorento. we were using a lexus 470 travelling at 160kph and the sorento was in our tail waiting for an opening to overtake.

Hi - I know I mentioned this previously.. but can anyone visit the Kia Shop along EDSA (Signet) and look for Mang Danny (Sales). He is so sure that the Sorento being sold is a VGT model (daw).

    Jeanpierre,

I 2nd the motion, when I saw the Sorento in Germany in 2004, I really fell in love with it and the Picanto too, that is why we have it both, and never looked back again, one of the wisest decision I have ever made...

    jlo,

Frankly, there are some sales agent who doesn't know what they are selling...

Although I really like the Sorento, can you justify purchasing a 1.5M suv without ABS/EBD. For that price, they should have made it standard..even the passenger airbag.

Consider that there was also a time when the Nissan had only one airbag and no ABS. And they were selling it for tons of cash more than the Sorento.

Consider also that the Patrol is very bare:
    *No gauge dimmer
    *No MP3 capability
    *No foglamps (initially)
    *No auxillary power outlets
    *NO 4x4!
    *Cheap looking interior

Among the mid-size truck-based SUV's, the Sorento is my favorite. Too bad it's out of my budget.

    hi foxxy

that's why i really liked it when they offered the LX Ltd that we bought for 1.27M because it's basically the same high-end truck minus some bells and whistles.

and yes, mapapaisip ka nga kung worth 1.5M without ABS/EBD and passenger airbag. pero kung makina, transmission at pang-ilalim pag-uusapan, maganda sya.

now am more confused. just read the specs of the new ford everest 3.0L CRDi 4x4.

it has driver/passenger airbags, side airbags, abs w/ ebd, reverse parking sensors, more horespower, more torque and was surprised to find out it has VGT! even the 4x2 is VGT already.

Go with whatever floats your boat. On paper, the Everest does look very good. But the overall execution leaves a bit to be desired. The Everest was obviously built to be an entry level SUV for Ford. A lot of the interior trim shouts cheap, there are some rough edges here and there. Obviously, there has been some penny pinching during development forcing a lot of carryover components from the Ranger including the leaf spring rear suspension. The Everest is also driven by a 5 speed A/T also but without a manual override.

The Sorento on the other hand was developed to be the flagship, top of the line SUV for Kia.

I don't know why people obsess over VGT, it's just a turbo with vanes that move (hence the variable geometry), even the 140bhp of the Sorento is enough for me already. The 170bhp VGT Sorento does sound yummy, but the base engine will suffice. Btw, how much power does the VGT Everest make?

for the Everest 2.5L 4x2 XLS MT:

    power - 143 ps / 3,500
    torque - 330 / 1,800

for the Everest 3.0L 4x4 XLT AT:

    power - 156 ps / 3,200
    torque - 380 / 1,800

    both are VGT on paper

I 2nd the motion sa sabi ni otep "Go with whatever floats your boat" ..hehehe
I can sense that you're in dilema chosing between the two. A true SUV( Sorento) vs an AUV trying to be a SUV( yan ang description ng ibang tsikoteers sa Everest). Everest HP claim can be just on paper unless they have the dyno test to prove it. Mas malakas pa nga compare sa Fortuner though the later have ABS. Tapos sa suspension coil and spring ang Sorento at everest naman is still leaf spring pa rin (correct me if I'm wrong). Pagdating naman sa interior at exterior, mas maganda ang Sorento compare sa Everest. Saka isang advantage pa ng Sorento is his trans which is 5-speed AT with Tiptronic/sportmatic option. Everest wala nyan. No offense sa mga Everest owner ha. Kung ako bibili uli at tong dalawa pipilian, Sorento pa rin ako lalong lalo na pag may VGT variant na... Peace ( Note: OT Kung Everest bibilhin mo, kuha ka na dahil may price increase daw )

The Everest has a 3 horespower advantage (PS is just French for HP) over the Sorento. If they needed VGT to acheive that, it's hardly worth writing home about. True, that VGT does offer advantages like faster spool up (almost zero lag) times but then again, the Sorento 2.5 is hardly a slouch from a standing start.

The 3.0 liter will obviously make more power. That's a given already.

And the Sorento was designed to be sold in Europe and the U.S., hence the more upmarket interior when compared to the Everest.

    OTEP,

Maybe, with the same engine (AFAIK), adding VGT enabled the 2.5L CRDi to produce 170hp compared to the 140hp it used to make with the prevous type of turbo.

maybe that's why people are obsessed with VGT. hehehe.

Hyundai CRDi VGT can produce 150hp/335Nm out of 2.2L. If chipped, it increases to 185hp/395Nm. Makes one wonder what further developments are up for today's diesel engines.

With Ford's Duratorq though, it makes me curious how come their 2.5L can only produce 143hp and their 3.0L can only produce 156 (which is lame) despite the same Bosch CRDi design/system and BorgWarner VGT (AFAIK).
