January 25th, 2006 12:44 PM #931Need help. I need to stencil the engine number of my carnival. I tried looking for it yesterday but I cannot find it. I found some serial numbers but I wasn't so sure if that was the engine number. Can someone tell me where it is? TIA

ericmm,
The engine number is deep in the bowels of the engine bay, and it is hard to reach if you don't know where to look.
If you have the time, you'll need to take out the air intake manifold, and then, using a mirror and a flashlight, you should be able to see the engine number malapit sa ilalim ng engine block. Otherwise, you can just have the stenciling done at a Kia casa, although they charge a fee for it.

January 25th, 2006 09:58 PM #933Hello to everyone, well am buying a 2nd hand 2002 white Carnival by weekends time. di ko sure kung gray unit or gen1, the odometer is still mechanical so maybe gen1 nga. Am buying it from 2nd owner. Milleage is 49k. Based on the CR, 1st registered end of jan2002 so okay lang ang takbo, n d 1st owner is a company.
How did i came across this thread, well my friend know someone selling a minivan but not sure sa make and model. So we went and tinignan namin yung unit and it was Kia Carnival. Love at first site agad. Kasi i tought the resale value of the carnival was high dahil malaki na car/van. And the owner was selling it for 450k. I accepted w/o asking for a price reduction. Then and there i decided agad. Inspected the unit okay. kailangan nga lang replace ng tires.
After that nag search na ako sa web forums for reviews and i happen upon this thread sa tsikot. And lalo lang ako nakumbise that i made the right choice (1st choice ko kasi is Adventure).
What tires do you recommend aside from Dunlop Le Mans, mukha mahirap maghanap kasi nito?
I'll also have d unit check at Kia Casa for some repair estimates.

January 25th, 2006 10:35 PM #934Helooo everyone, i have been reading this forum since i got my used Sedona 2002 last November. I did not purposedly register until i finished the last of the thread para hindi ako ma-off sa usapan. I was both happy and sad because...happy first bec. this forum is available (great!) and my Kia in spite of many drawbacks stil comes out best value for the money. Sad because some of the misery of the Carnival/Sedona owners have actually happened to me. My car is 2002 LS, A/T with some 36,000Km when i got it. Runs well, good airconditioning (very good infact) and for its size quite economical. Makes 7 to 8 on City and 8.5 to 11 (best) on highway (1% Biodiesel of course) sarili natin ito.
Speed, it can go far beyond 140Kph loaded with 8 pax. Suspension is great except for some heavy roll and understeer in high speed curves (oops...i forgot im driving a minivan pala!) The second row seats medyo slightly thinning yung foam. Otherwise, the interior is great. Amoy malinis pa rin.
Last December 22, i went to Bicol with my extended family (8 pax) and managed zigzag at Quezon park with ease and handled rough broken pavement of Quirino Highway with great performance. I coul have clocked less than 7.5 hours including 1 stopover at Quezon for breakfast and 1 alimango buying in Ragay. "i could have" because i made it 7 Km short of Naga City. Running at 120 Kph, my engine stopped and when i noticed my warning lights all turned on, i right away moved slightly towards the shoulders while stil in high speed motion. Cranked the engine a few times, mabilis ang cranking walang effort, fuel was there, no air in line, battery is strong. I suspected timing belt and i openned the hood, removed the oil filler cap and asked my wife to crank it briefly. To my dismay, hindi na umiikot ang cams ko. I decided to tow the car hanggang bahay. Made several calls to service supervisors in Manila but to my dismay, ang lalayo ng mga analysis. Another sad factor is, Batangas is the southernmost Kia center in Luzon. It was Bong of Signet who made a specific and reassuring analysis (buti na lang, non-interference type ang engine natin). Ordered the parts mostly sa wheels e. rodriguez and some local purchases. Spent some 6,600 on Timing belt, new a/c drivebelt, 1 plastic idler pulley, lower timing belt cover, valve cover gasket and 1 tensioner bearing for a/c. Paid 3K on labor of 2 mechanics from Mitsubishi Naga (including tip). Pag-andar, parang walang nangyari! Thank God.
Mahab na masyado ito. Pasensya na matagal na akong gusto sumali dito. Will continue on my next log.
P.S. Dont worry, ngayon pa lang i tell you, its a great car...

January 26th, 2006 09:28 AM #937Part 2 Bicol Travel!
On Dec 26 it was fixed, drained all coolant and filled it up with mitsubishi premix coolant, tama yung observatins nyo, mali yung capacities ng manual slightly more than 6 liters lang. Isang consuelo lang, apart from the dirt that the shredded timing belt left, my front end (pulley side) of the engine was so neat with mil spec finish green metals and shining aluminum. There were only very faint radiating lubricant from my idlers. I plan to change the rest of the bearings by 80K na lang. The plastic idler had to be replaced because it was the culprit. The previous mechanic (out of warranty) cannot install back the timing belt so he taperred the pulley into a conical shape. Natural the belt had the tendency to slip out of the cone!
There you have it guys, hindi palpak ng KIA yun kundi we are sometimes so impatient we make remedyo. The guys from misubishi alsmost insisted on using the conical idler kasi hindi rin nila ma install ang new belt. 152 teeth that was the specs, the older model had only 151, lalo nang di magkasya yun. Aside from the eccentric cam para sa tensioner, meron palang lever sa likod that will give the right clearance for belt installation. Thank God!
I used the van roaming around Naga City. Came back to Manila Jan 2, it was a pleasant drive. I did almost 11 on highway, may hatw pa yun. Among the little things i did while my engine was down are: clean each and every bolt, covers, plastics etc. in the engine compartment. Removed the headlamps and wiped out the soot in the lenses and bulbs. My travel back brought my odo near 40K na and i felt that the engine was suffering the oil degradation. Na change oil ko na rin and wow! ang ganda lalo ng andar.
Help me on this guys! Should i be paranoid of my oil pump/chain too? What are the symptoms? Maingay ba? May knock? Pare, timbre nyo naman...On that engine repair, i saw that my right upper engine support has a through and through crack, should this be a cause for more vibration? I dont know, this is my first diesel car. I need to see a very smooth engine running sedona so i can compare.
By the way, this car had 36 dents when i bought it. Now 1 na lang thanks to the great filipino "denters". Magaling talaga tayo dyan!
By the way, i had a suzuki LJ-80, Sentra 1.5 SGX, Vitara JLX and my Last one a 1998 CRV matic. I bought a "Haynes" Repair manual for each of these cars. Itong diesel natin na Sedona hindi listed sa mga 3rd party repair manuals kaya im really hoping dito na lang tayo magtulongan pag dating sa repairs.
All for now!
All for now.

January 26th, 2006 10:52 AM #938Hello Nanotech,
Replacement of the engine support will cancel all vibrations. This I experienced with my recent repairs. The oil pump problem is a grinding sound caused by a worn out sproket teeth. This should have been discovered when the timing belt was replaced. Since this was not replace and all your bearings where replaced check for the grinding sound. I have high confidence that your oil pump is ok.
tnx

January 26th, 2006 12:22 PM #939Tnx Rodski.
May i know which side of the engine should i watch for the grinding sound? Ano kaya ang cause ng premature wear out ng sprockets. I read in a foreign post sa France ata, it also happened to a 2 year old Sedona. Galit na galit yung frances na owner. I guess one good reason is prolonged oil change di ba? The metallic component of used oil is so abrassive.

January 26th, 2006 12:26 PM #940I also learned from many accounts of burnt wiring harness sa alternator, have you heard of this? Di kaya, hihigpitan lang yung connections from time to time para di mag-init yung high current bolt on connector sa main charging line?
