it's obvious that i've been backreading.
leolop's experience is my reality. hehehe! imagine having the steering act up on you when you are in baguio. now my that my research is finished, the legwork to find a good shop to do it begins.
so far, here is my list on the things to check up on:
- lubricate power steering universal joint
- check steering couplings
- check crankshaft pulley

Hi KCar peeps,
Does anybody know if any of the local gasoline player ATF is compatible to our Kia Car recommended ATF, Dexron II E/III M? I noticed that Mobil is also DexronII E compatible. How about the coolant, any recommended brand as well?
Thanks in advance.

after hearing a similar high pitched grinding noise near the alternator, i did some backreading as well and i'm a little freaked out.
e. rod told me that my 2001 carnival does not have the oil pump chain problem. can you guys confirm this? the idea of an engine overhaul is giving me nightmares. i take it that if the oil light goes on, it's too late and you're dead?
diesoline: where would you bring your carnival to have this checked? speedyfix? budget's a bit tight and i'm wary of the casas after everything i've read. thanks in advance!

hinlog, dexron III atf should be ok with your car. mine is on ac delco dexron III. i would have wanted to try out diamond SP-III as it is specifically designed for front wheel drive A/Ts. diamond SP-III is not sold in the auto shops in baguio city but i heard that they are sold in mitsubishi service centers at around P600/liter.
BUT: somebody posted of poor transmission performance with dexron III which was promptly fixed when it was flushed out with dexron II. the only dexron II i've ever seen lately was valvoline's dexron IIe.
an overhaul is a different thing from an oil pump chain replacement. diesel engines are made of material superior to gasoline engines. as long as the engine is properly cared for and not subject to severe duty, it should easily surpass 150K km before any overhaul. the sd33t diesel engine in my patrol was overhauled 4 months ago * 415K km (approximately 95% highway kilometers).
ideally, the check engine warning should turn on if there is an issue with the engine. with the oil light, what one has to do is to stop the engine asap. i assume that if the oil chain gives way, there would be sudden engine failure. i hope somebody can pipe in on this.
imo, any competent mechanic can do the oil chain replacement. more importantly, original parts should be used.
re my power steering problem, it's my power steering pump that's shot. i think that a replacement is in order. the pump costs 4.5k at goodgear. i wish i have an option to repair the pump but as there is no leak visible that hope seems far off.

September 9th, 2007 06:45 AM #1886sorry, havent accessed tsikot for over a month until now as diesoline called me up about his steering problem. I told him to check out the universal joint. It happened to me before where you would suddenly feel the steering go heavy on you on certain turns, but it was only for a second and then goes back to normal. It started occasionally, becoming more frequent. Had it checked by Casa several times as it was under warranty then. They only checked the steering column system and lubricated it several times and it did go away, but would come back after a week or so. When it became more frequent and unfortunately it happened after my 3 year warranty expired, sent it back to the casa as I was afraid it was either the pump or the gearbox, they replaced the universal joint. Until now, wala na ang problema. That was a year ago na.
Right now, I have a bearing noise whenever I switch on my aircon compressor. My truck motorshop says its the adjuster bearing or adjuster pulley. It costs 3000+ at the casa. I just want replacement. But here in the province, the replacement part shops want a sample so it means I have to remove it and sample it, which means down ang kotse ko. So until now, haven't had it done.

September 10th, 2007 09:43 AM #1888diesoline: how's your unit?
here is one project that might interest gen1 owners who are diy enthusiasts - adding auxilliary jack to our head unit (for gen1 owners lang, iba kasi hu ng gen2).
last weekend i added an auxilliary jack to my hu to accommodate the portable dvd player i installed. i initially used a cassette adapter but i got annoyed by the clattering sound coming from the cartridge and the intermittent sound interruptions.
a few posts back i mentioned that the cdplayer of our hu simply uses the radio as amplifier, so what i did is to tap into the audio wires connecting the cdplayer and the radio. the audio wires are black (negative), red (left channel) and white (right channel). i connected the wires to a stereo jack which i placed to the right of the hu. to activate the jack you need to insert a cd first (so that the hu stops receiving radio signal) and press pause (so that the cdplayer also stops transmitting audio signal). the jack is now ready to be connected to any audio device (warning: if the gadget has a volume control place it in the lowest setting first then adjust to about 1/4 to 1/2 after the gadget has been connected. if there is none set the hu's volume to minimum as the signal may actually be very loud). the good thing about this set-up is that i still can control the volume from the steering wheel .
sorry i can't post any pix right now as it means opening the dashboard again. although i might take a picture of the set-up including the dvd player later (pag naalala ko)
what's more? i also mentioned before that the cdplayer of my unit doesn't want play cds but for some reasons after doing this project it is suddenly playing cds again (although original cds only)
welcome novo_d

September 10th, 2007 02:44 PM #1889Novo, welcome to the site for sedona/carnival owners!
New observation I made today. Sa lakas ng ulan kanina, I decided to switch on the aircon blower, push the recirc button, but didn't press the A/C button. Mine is the local sedona unit. Last night, I put the thermostat slightly above the coldest setting kasi ang lamig ng aircon. With the thermostat setting still at that setting, napansin ko medyo mainit ang buga ng hangin. Out of curiousity, I turned the thermostat knob to the right, lalong uminit ang hangin!
Main Question 1. Does this mean that the a/c button controls the cold compressor section, while the thermostat setting is different from the a/c compressor? Does this mean that if you move the thermostat from coldest to somewhere to the right, the compressor continues to run while the air is regulated by mixing the cold output with the hot output? What does that make our aircon system-climate control? Mas sanay ako sa pure cold aircon compressor setup. If this is the case, does anyone know IF our compressor gives out, can we use those typical sanden or denso compressors?
Main Question 2. Where does the hot air come from? Is there a separate unit or does it get its heat from the engine compartment? But there is no engine fume smell. And it can't be coming from the engine because when I did the above, it was still cold startup status.

September 10th, 2007 03:10 PM #1890Hi,
I have a question. I have a 2002 Carnival and lately when I shift from neutral to park medyo matigas na pag shift but when releasing from park to drive hindi naman. I press the brake naman firmly when i shift to park pero medyo matigas pa din. Any idea what could be the reason? Any preventive maintenance ideas here how to take care of shifting?
TIA
