EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION
This is an emissions control technique for reducing oxides of nitrogen emissions in the tailpipe. A small amount of exhaust gas is recirculated back into the intake manifold to dilute the incoming air/fuel mixture. Contrary to what you'd think, it has a cooling effect on combustion temperatures that helps reduce the formation of oxides of nitrogen (See NoX). The EGR valve is the main control device in this system.
The EGR valve is the main emissions control component in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The valve is located on the intake manifold, and opens a small passageway between the exhaust and intake manifold to allow a metered amount of exhaust to flow back into the engine. This reduces combustion temperatures and helps control the formation of oxides of nitrogen. The EGR valve is opened by the application of vacuum to its control diaphragm. Some also require a certain amount of exhaust back pressure before they'll open. On newer vehicles, the valve is electronic and uses one or more solenoids or a small stepper motor. The valve should remain closed while the engine is cold and at idle. It should only open once the engine has warmed up and is running at part-throttle. If the valve sticks shut (or is disconnected), NOX emissions will soar and detonation will often result (See Detonation and Spark Knock). If it sticks in the open position or fails to close all the way, it acts like a vacuum leak resulting in a rough idle, hesitation and possible stalling.

rodski afaik did a diy cleaning of his carnival's egr valve which he detailed in some posts early in this thread. the eqr cleaning can also be done in any kia casa or reputable repair shop. afaik it is a half-day job. the turbo cleaning can be done in one day and one can elect to have the egr serviced at the same time. the only problem with having them done at the same time is that one will not be able to see which service has done the better improvement to performance. if one has the time, i think it is better to have one service done after the other.
following mikey177's advice i searched the tsikot threads re turbo cleaning. this one came up. interesting. anyway, this is the key post

Well, I don't know what the solution is, but my '02 Sedona just manifested the same symptoms as yours.

September 4th, 2006 04:01 PM #1265Hello Tsikoteers,
hello From Singapore, To those having problems with the power steering. I had the same experience with my carnival recently lah. So since my carnival will be bought by my sister pina da works ko na kay Zee. They fixed the power steering, strut bearing, refilled the shocks.
For those with the egr problem. The best solution now is to go for the PEtron carbon clean. They put the chemical on the fuel system and the intake manifold. So dali lahat ng "gunk".
Currently Driving the Mercedes Vitto in Singapore. Since this is a commercial goods Van this is diesel. Walang usok ito. I am studying how the mercedez guys did it. I will keep you guys posted on my discovery. I see canisters and stuff in the engine bay.
tnx

September 5th, 2006 12:03 PM #1267Hello GUys,
What Zee did to the power steering was to pull down the pump and replace o rings and stuff. Then they sand the spinning rotor to make it flat again. After that they will purge the entire power steering mechanism with a fluid with cleaning properties. Ayon solve ang problema.
The symptoms I had was that matigas ang steering. gagaan pag high rpm. tapos pag menor mo to turn ang bigat ulit. Also a month before that pinalitan namin yung PS hoses as PM (Preventive maintenance) dahil nakababa ang engine for the timing belt and oil pump PM. Ayon pinalitan din yung power steering fluid.
Hope this helps.
tnx
Rodski

September 6th, 2006 09:31 PM #1269Hello. I experienced a similar problem. In my case, my Carnival's engine would crank but not start. Tried to start it several times until the battery almost ran out. Then all of sudden it just sprang to life. While driving though, I noticed that the RPM would drop to Zero (O) everytime I release the accelerator pedal. But inspite of that the Carnival's engine did not stop. Finally, after another week the Carnival was really dead. No amount of cranking would start the engine. The problem was traced to a busted fuse (No. 18, 15A). This fuse protects what the mechanic said was a soleniod that controls the fuel going into the engine. It opens a valve to let fuel in when you crank the engine and closes it shut when you turn the engine off.
After this I had problems with my alternator. The battery was drained too. I had the alternator checked and the mechanic said that the alternator did not give out sufficient power. I replaced the alternator (85Watts). I believe there are two types, one for manual and one for automatic. Mine is automatic, 85Watts, the manual comes with another brand. Cost of new Kia alternator, PHP 16.5K. Ouch. I have a 2001 Carnival LS.
If any of you need a good Kia mechanic and access to original Kia Carnival parts let me know. I have been having my Kia Carnival serviced by Wheels and Delta Motors only UNTIL I realized they were charging me so much for the parts. Worse, they did not tell me what the real problems were plus the quality of work was really shoddy.
I ran into my friend's brother whose company imports Kia/Starex parts direct from Korea. Their company supplies Wheels and Delta motors and Kia casas. He works for a Korean national and supplies the Banaue and provincial auto outlets as well. He was the one who recommended the mechanic. So, I have a good mechanic and access to original Kia parts at dealer prices.
