Kia had a demo of its four models on hand at Glorietta 3 today. Out of the whole lineup I was most impressed with the Carens' build quality (admittedly, the Carnival had a lot more toys in its favor though). It feels small enough to be maneuverable in urban gridlock, but spacious enough to transport seven. I tried shaking the demo Carens' controls and dials---none of them elicited the plasticky glint and clatter of our old Pregio.

Kia has a nice car on their hands here

Fuel consumption ko at average 10.5 km/liter, CRDI LX M/T. 50/50 highway and city use, medyo gigil pako sa tapak.

I'm satisfied with the consumption, considering it's my daily drive to/ from las pinas - makati and my errand drive.

The newly opened Kia Diliman dealer (along Commonwealth) had a 3-day exhibit at Ever Gotesco Commonwealth. Since I live near the area, I went over to check out the exhibit. They had a beige LX on display and a silver LX for testdrive purposes. Syempre, I testdrove the Carens again, this time with my parents as well. We all found the ride very nice and car-like.

It goes without saying that I was sold on the Carens for some time now... I'm just waiting for what apparently is forever for the approval of my car plan...

One thing though... I noticed on the beige LX that it no longer had an illuminated keyhole like some of us here had noted before... I hate that. That and the fact that they no longer had the small cabin light at the back. Oh well... really cant win them all...

But, at the end of the day, the features of the Carens will STILL win me over and I'm STILL excited to finally be able to drive one home.

YOU SAID IT!! Ewan ko ba kung bakit ang tagal... kating-kati pa naman ako to get a car that will look exactly like yours! :D yup, we've really decided to get the white Carens... peace.

Hmm... the brochure that Kia hands out says that the illuminated keyhole is standard on both LX and EX variants... and I sort of remember seeing the illuminated keyhole in an LX variant displayed in one of the dealers I went to before... but now, I can't be too sure if it was an LX or an EX...

marga, just go around the dealerships. since you have the purchasing power, use it to your advantage. some dealers are very helpful and will go the extra distance (they need your business anyway) to get your attention. keep asking questions, have them run you through the vehicle, what to expect after you've bought one (service expenses and all).

do a test drive. with a bunch of people in tow so you can try her out in realistic terms. and during high noon.

marga, afaik, transmission lang talaga difference nila. ang maganda sa carens kasi 6-speed mt transmission sila. great for fuel consumption.

guys, eto pala pic ng work around ko for the missing cargo area light... you can get this at ace hardware for P200. yung pinaka switch niya is just pressing on the leds. so walang switch sa gilid or likod. and since led siya, tipid sa battery..

That looks great, Mari! Just a question though... how will you attach it to the side? Will whatever adhesive you use ruin the interior moldings (where it's actually attached) in the long run?

Its a very good idea. I'm pretty sure I'll do that when I finally have my new car.

Bro marga25ph, I actually had the same dilemma when I began running through the choices that I would have, given the budget. True, the Tucson and the Carens are roughly in the same price range and both offer the economical and yet powerful CRDi models.

HOWEVER, one of my main considerations was space for passengers. While the Tucson had a spacious cargo bay area at the back, it was still strictly a 4-5 seater vehicle. I'm married with two small kids so that means that I needed a car that would fit me, my wife, my two kids and one or two yayas (not to mention, the occasional parent/s and/or siblings). So, that kinda clinched the deal for a Carens for me.

Besides, the Carens actually kinda looks like an SUV (without the high ground clearance). AND, if I'm not mistaken, the Tucson CRDi is not VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger - tama ba?) while the Carens is definitely VGT - which means more power despite both having a 2.0L engine.

The EX variant of the Carens has driver-side airbags but the LX variant doesn't. Also, the locally-available Carens does not have ABS - I'm not sure if ABS is standard in all Tucson variants.

With respect to the features removed from the 2008 model, I have to be honest that this got me a bit pissed off. Simple things like the cabin light at the back, glove compartment light, and possibly the keyhole illumination (although I'm not sure if this applies only to the LX variant) were removed from the 2008 model - something that really baffles me since I'm sure the cost of these features would not have affected the overall cost of the vehicle as much.
