I DID say it MIGHT be what they're trying to do. Hard to believe naman that they'll just abandon such a successful market niche -- their execs shouldn't be earning much kung ganun. I did say much earlier na hihina ang Gen 4 Starex kumpara sa Gen 3 in terms of unit sales kung hindi sila magba-backtrack. It's a gamble pero ganun talaga ang negosyo eh.

Innova vs Carnival opens up a whole new can of worms -- starting with whether or not they have the same market, for starters. If I were in the middle of the Starex market before and I'm NOT a loyalist, I'd be waiting as long as I can for something else to come along which is what I'm doing right now. Kung nagmamadali naman ako, I'd be looking at lesser-known brands hoping to discover buried treasure.

    Opinion ko lang po.

HARI should really do something about the grey market Starex, because their name will be on the line... yung grey market starex 1 year lang ang warranty tapos you don't really know what is included so if anything goes wrong and the grey market dealers are unwilling to fix it, their goes the name of Hyundai... remember when people hear of problems that might come up they won't care if the unit was from the grey market or HARI for them there is a problem with Hyundai, and it will have an effect on the efforts of HARI (including the other models that they sell)...

Bro.,- yes, I agree that it could be a market repositioning strategy of Hyundai/Kia for the Starex and the Carnival.... But the latter has not really enjoyed that much market acceptance compared to the Starex and the Innova.... So, there's the real opportunity for the Innova to creep in the market segment that is left vacuum by the Starex....

"Malaki tubo,- kaunti benta **or** maliit tubo,- marami benta".... that's Hyundai's choice.

Sad to say bro.,- it will be very hard for Hyundai to backtrack on their pricing and product repositioning strategies because they're already in the mud.
Doing so will alienate and agitate those who already bought their Grand Starex.... It could have been better if they started their pricing strategy a bit on the low end and slowly increase it (with additional features or accessories) until it reaches the flex point in their sales... It's a totally different ballgame for them now....

Also, I have to admit that I was a 'loyalist' for Hyundai vehicles as I saw them as great bang for the buck (then). Actually, we were keen on buying a Tucson AT in a few months time. And, replacing our Gen3 AT Starex (used to own a Gen2, too) with another Starex in a little over a year... This development has tremendously disappointed/ (alienated) us.... hu hu hu...

Bottomline,- don't get me wrong,- I respect your opinion...

Well, their executives are getting greedy. Or maybe it's their chance in trying to project an upmarket image, by going squarely against the GL Grandia and Super Grandia, thereby alienating their loyal following. Perhaps they had the impression that whoever buys Toyota, still buys Toyota no matter how stingy Toyota can get, and the same thinking would work for Hyundai, at least in the Starex's case.

Well, it could also be that they didn't know they had a SEPARATE market niche from Toyota -- both Hiace AND Innova. Kasama kami ni CVT dito kaya medyo disappointed kami. They definitely had their own niche in the Gen3 kasi sa seating pa lang, ang Gen 3 sat 6-10 while Hiace had 8-12 and Innova 6-7 (depende sa taba. hehehe). Also, the Gen3's pricing was IN BETWEEN the Innova and the Hiace. In releasing the Gen4, they went after Hiace sales (na hindi naman karamihan at puro loyalist ang laman) -- leaving their current niche open for anyone to grab.

Also, maybe the fact that HARI is now offering 5-year warranties on new vehicles has something to do with the higher price of the Grand Starex. Kumbaga, gusto nila may buffer sila kung sakaling maraming mag-warranty claim within that period. Just my idle speculation

So they don't have enough confidence in their products that they need a buffer in case something goes wrong within the warranty period.

Correct. They got greedy and went after the Hiace market, alienating people looking at Innovas and Gen 3s. My Dad, for instance, chose to go with an Innova just a few days ago when he was looking for a replacement to his '98 11 seater Gen 1. We have a Gen 2 big face (or is it Gen 3) 9-seater CRDI already, so he was shopping for something as flexible and capable, but newer. We included a visit to the Hyundai showroom in his search. He was impressed with the Gen 4's external size, but not its price and internal flexibility. Tsk tsk!

May plano kaya silang ilabas 'tong gasoline version dito? But then again, baka sa presyong walang bibili din nila ibenta 'to.

if that's the posted fuel economy rating (7.1 Km/L), what would the actual be? Around 5 Km/L? i'd stick with the CRDI engine.

Agree bro.... Even the SAs, who I was conversing with a few days ago could only shake their heads in utter disbelief on their marketing and pricing schemes...

Who wouldn't? Especially when the numerous feedbacks they're getting from their current customers are more of shock, frustration and disappointment.... (isa ako roon......)...

Again, they're deep into this strategy. I wonder how they'll pull themselves out of this pit....

Hehehe! Interesting.

I think there are one or two so far. How has the van performed so far (power, maneuverability, overall driving impression)? Did it live up to your expectations? What kind of seating configuration did you choose and how do you find it? Is there anything you as owners would like to change about the Grand Starex if given the chance?

We're planning to buy the Grand Starex at the grey market. I don't think the grand starex the released here won't be any better than what the grey market has. If you guys plan to buy that grand starex crap by HARI... you're just wasting you're money. well that's for me... ^_^

AYOS! Hehe!
