^im also buffled with the sludging issues of the altis
Folks we have our self a winner, You got it crazy boy, it's the number on reason for sludge, second is other contaminates like coolant. Some engines are just sluge monsters due to a bad design, Toyota's 1997 to 2002 for example.
If you use a low detergent automotive oil then you can expect to have a sludgy engine. If you have a coolant system leak expect the same. That's why it's always best to know what's in your oil, It's good to pull your valve cover from time to time just to check if everthing's good to go.
thanks doc! for the quick reply and information you shared, the sample was run on TDI diesel engine, is it safe to use this on gasoline engine? thanks
dvldoc, thanks for you input hehe. cause locally, i have seen dealer maintained toyota cars running on OEM oil filter and OEM toyota fully synthetic oil (Chevron rebranded), OCI of 10,000km, and sludge started to form as early as 30,000km.
however, on our toyota cars, we use Delo engine oils to flush the motor every 30,000km. we use it for 1,000km and then drain it and then back to our oil of preference. currently, we are already using Baldwin filters and Zic oil, with OCI of 8,000km. hope that our motors will not sludge.
OT:
I have been receiving different response with regards to how often do we need to change the fuel filter element especially for diesel powered engines. We all know that an excellent filtration capabilities of a fuel filter is equally important as to an oil filter. Some people change their fuel filter element during every change oil and some do it every 15 or 20K PMS. Do we have a norm on how we often should we change the fuel filter? Toyota recommends that "Fuel filter need not change periodically" as stated in the manual. Your inputs will be very much appreciated.![]()
it would really depend on where you load up. if the station is old already, chances are the storage tank is full of rust already. for me, i used to change fuel filter every 10k km. but upon checking, the filter is still clean. the diesel is also clean. so i extended to 15k km fuel filter change now and observe the quality of the filter after 15k km. using seaoil diesel. cleanest compared to the big3 so far.
my gf owns an altis (2008). had a change oil performed to it a week ago. now using baldwin oil filter + Elf excellium FS oil. Before elf, it was a mobil1 0w40 oil + VIC, after draining it, surprised that the oil was still looking very good (though it only ran 5k kms, its VIC so...)
Doc, im still hesitant to run a 10k kms OIC with it. Car's mileage is 25k. Used Mobil at 20k. Castrol Magnatec at 15k. Toyota M/O at 1, 5 and 10k.
That Mobil is one heck of an oil. Hope I can say the same with this Elf. Will find out on my next change.
Diesel oils will normally offer you much better engine protection than just regular automotive oil. The only thing you need to know is don't run oils with more than 1200ppm zinc or phosphorus. I don't like the low calcium because it can lead to sludge in your engine.

5000klm oil change intervals are a complete waste of money, 8000klm to 10000klm is more inline with 1000's of oil test have shown to be a safe and recommended oil change interval. 12000klm is a normal oil change interval here.
Just like to ask where can i find the filter base for baldwin filter in Manila. I am planning to install coolant filter, transmission filter on mitsubishi engine.
BT839 , B5134 and maybe BD28/ bd7028 for bypass engine. Tia
You can go around 10000 easily on mineral oil and 12000 to 15000 on synthetic but it also depends on the API rating. Oils like Delo 400 which are group 2 will go 12000 on a diesel so in a gas engine expect a much longer life out of it. Diesel oils are more robust and have a higher TBN so they last longer.
It's not me that busted it that for sure, the availability of engine oil analysis to the average person has shown clearly the facts on oil changes.
If your green, which I am not but try to be, it's much better for your environment as well, less oil used less to dispose of.

Indeed sir dvldoc. Not to mention savings in oil change interval. Imagine, if you have 5 or more cars..... that is already a big savings on extending the oil change interval.
They're near the 5th Ave. LRT station along Rizal Ave. Some word of caution with Pacer though. We bought a couple of Fleetguard filters from them a few months back and per checkings with dvldoc and cross-referencing the pics of what we got with what can be seen online, there's suspicion it may be fake. We're trying it now with a 5000km OCI and will open it up right after to confirm whether the filter is good or not.
I know this has been discussed so many times before in this thread but I'll ask again. The main reason why some people change oil regularly at a short interval is to avoid the formation of sludge inside the engine. Having said that, is it bad oil filtering that causes the formation of those sludges? or is it the oil itself which at some point will degrade and sludge the engine? sa oil ba ito or sa filter?
