Unlike sa North America, kada state may guidelines sa allowed use ng hazard lights. And in some states allowed na gumamit ng hazard lights while moving in extreme weather condition, in some states its not allowed while in motion for cars but mandatory for moving trucks also in zero visibility or extreme weather conditions.

In the absence of LTO guidelines in the use of hazard lights, the use of hazard lights is left at the discretion of the driver.

The fact that some states allow it, while others don't, mean that this practice of turning on hazard lights in a downpour (extreme weather condition) is not completely, 100% wrong, as James Deakin says. It's a grey area and still open for debate at best.

Kaya yata wala rin guideline ang LTO natin. Bahala na daw tayo kung sa tingin natin tama na gawin ito kapag umuulan ng malakas o hinde.

Eh yung ginagawa ng mga Hapon na pag gamit ng hazard light to say "thank you", mali din ba yun o tama? Ba't di natin sila gayahin. :D

I actually just have one question for those who use hazard lights. Aren't your tail lights enough?

In all the times I've driven through zero-visibility rain, I've been able to see cars that had their tail lights on.

For this reason I don't see the need to use signal lights during heavy rain. Using tail lights can address the visibility-to-others issue. Doing this will free up the signal lights to be used for changing lanes.

Dami kasi during heavy rains, pag magpatakbo, ang tutulin pa din, kala mo nangangarera sa ulan.

Besides, I think a driver's spatial recognition will notice that the red lights he's tailing is moving slower than usual, even without hazard lights.

Fast lane hogging. Dati rati sa NLEX wala yan. Ngayon almost EVERYBODY wants to drive on the fcuking fast lane, isama nyo na dyan ang mga inutil na GT express.

Kaya wala na choice kung minsan kung hindi mag overtake sa slow lane. Which is what I am doing.

Ang laki ng difference during heavy DAYTIME downpour sa mga expressway, mas visible yung hazard light.
Normally you will notice many use the hazard lights in heavy downpour mostly in the expressways, very rare in intercity highways like EDSA. The reason maybe is because of the speed you are driving and the longer braking distance in a wet slippery road.

Most of these bad habits eh "nakasanayan na", mga turo pa siguro ng magulang. Just like anything na turo ng magulang or nakasanayan na, mahirap kumbinsihin sila na mali iyon at dapat baguhin.

I agree, bad habit na tinuro nang nakakatanda na mali din pala.

Using nunh hazard at yung flashing when doing something wrong yun sobrang nakaka-asar.

On zero visibility, if your cars are equipped with rear fog lights, use them. These can be seen far more better.

It will take great efforts to unlearn wrong driving practices which are already deeply-rooted in the Pinoy driver. While we are at it, might as well update the "road code" to a more comprehensive one. Pansin ko yung mga pinoint-out ni Deakin ni wala nga dito eh:

btw you react sa highways mas delikado ka, kasi ang kultura nga ng pinoy use hazard sa heavy downpour let say 10-20m visibility, tapos ikaw wala, isa ka sa kakaunti na di mag hazard, at karamihan sa sikolohiya na ng driver pag ganyan ang ulan may hazard lights flickering meron sasakyan doon.

di pede i-insist sa karamihan ang nakita mo sa ibang bansa, at idagdag ko na din kasi nga walang definite ruling.

sa dyip talaga nao-obliga magpatay ng headlight pag may nakitang pasahero, di makikita ng pasahero kug anung byahe ito, pagkukulang na naman ng ltfrb yan dapat noon pa nagawan na ng solusyon nyan. di ako sang ayon sa pagpatay ng HL, pero ako nung sumasakay dyip di ko makita kung anu nakalagay sa windshield.

kung naabutan po ng bagong buhos na ulan, then nasa 100KPH yung speed ko, nasa fast lane na ako pero yung nasa likod ko po gusto pa mag-overtake!

Di lahat dumaan sa basics ng driving, patunay dyan mga jeepney driver na kahit sign ng no parking hindi alam. Yung ibang driver dyan "learn as you go" type. Alam lang sa umpisa eh paandarin ang sasakyan. Sa umpisa di nila alam yung kelan tamang gumamit ng hazard, then makikita nila sa ibang motorists na nag hahazard pag umuulan, ang mangyayari ia-adopt na yung ganung gawi.

Lalo na yung naturuan ng magulang ng maling gawi sa pag da drive. Sila mga mahirap itama.

Dapat magkaroon ng wide Information drive para sa mga motorista. Sa ibang bansa gumagastos ang gobyerno nila para sa mga ads sa TV for information campaign for road safety. Sana ganun din gawin sa atin.

We really need an upgrade on our traffic laws and a better implementation of existing ones. yaman na sana nang Pinas kung mga bus, trikes at PUJ jeepney laging hinuhuli.

as mentioned already.. in some countries you are allowed to use your hazzard lights in really bad conditions.. but then when you do, the weather conditions are so bad that you are hardly moving at all.. if you are moving its because you are driving to find a safe spot to stop and wait for the conditions to get better...

i agree also that the visibility of your red parklights are almost the same with your yellow or amber coloured hazzard lights.. and besides in the US majority of cars still use Red colored lights for their signal lights. so the argument that yellow is brighter than red is defeated.. in europe you are allowed to use your hazzards lights if you are driving fast and suddenly have to slow down.. but it goes down to how you can communicate to others if you are turning left or right, with your hazzard light on.. you cant communicate..

If really heavy downpour, visibility is down to about 10meters i think during one time, HL on talaga ako at pabagal mga 40kph na lang.
