I'd like to elaborate more on what I've previously said...
My dad chose the gas (VVT-i) version of the Innova because:
1. It's cheaper than the diesel version (SRP).
2. He wanted to play safe and avoid possible reliability issues surrounding D4D. But I didn't say probable.
3. He doesn't use it everyday so the cost of running it is not that relevant.
4. When he does use it, he drives long distances and not much gas is wasted. Hence, longer fuel mileage. He doesn't get stuck on traffic jams so gas consumption and cost is not much of an issue. The car runs 9km/L on average.
5. The 2.0L engine's power and torque is adequate even when the car's full of people.
You ought to choose the diesel (D4D) version if:
1. You could shell out the extra cash in exchange for...
2. ...WAY BETTER fuel mileage. My uncle gets 14-15km/L when he used to drive his D4D Innova. That's combined highway and city driving.
3. You will use it everyday to go places and/or short distances, because...
4. You'll probably spend more on fuel if you'll drive it everyday to work and go through all the hell of traffic jams. Diesel is still a bit cheaper than gasoline AND you would still get better gas mileage on a diesel engine than the gas version, even on city driving conditions.
5. You need pulling power. It's a fact that the diesel engine can pull the same amount of passengers and cargo with less effort compared to the gas engine.
So it boils down to this: both cars are exceptional cars, but it's just the matter of the probable purpose of the car is that will determine which one's the best for you. That's just my opinion!!! In my dad's case, he wouldn't mind if gasoline is more expensive than diesel because he won't be driving it a lot anyway! That's the trade-off he got because fuel efficiency won't be an issue in his case, and the diesel version is more costly by PhP40,000 by the time he got the car last year.
And finally, let's be optimistic. Don't immediately have a mindset that the diesel is unreliable and costly to maintain. Give the car the benefit of the doubt and try it for yourself. The risk of defects automatically come with the purchase of anything! Regrets will only come if the car breaks down when it's already out-of-warranty.
Whatever Innova you choose, I'm sure that you'll enjoy it a much as I've enjoyed driving our own car and reading about the experiences of fellow Innova owners. I hope this helps!!!

yickks!
