i visited an apv showroom yesterday to check on this model that i've been researching on (sa totoo lang, drooled on -- after seeing the pimped apv pics of our malaysian friends) for the past weeks; i wanted to check if one would really feel like a bus driver on the apv driver's seat as i've read somewhere in this forum.
i was happily surprised to discover that the 2008 variants are now the current offerings. new grill, coil spring rear suspension, much classier grey-beige combination dashboard, adjustable steering wheel, mp3 na ang head unit, captain's seats ang second row, more color choices. my first view of its interior (i was shown a black sgx m/t unit, yun lang ang nandoon e) made me feel like i was looking at a proper -- albeit more compact -- van, one where your passengers, including those in the third row, would feel comfy all the way to baguio and back.
the way i felt at that very moment, i would have told the other customer waiting for his black apv unit inching its way through traffic from the taguig (taguig ba yun?) bodega something like this: painumin na lang kita p're, bigyan pa kita kateybol, pero ako na muna mag-uuwi nung apv mo, total isang tawag lang nila may mapapasunod namang isa pang unit e, hehehe! that is, if i had the money plus a few extra then. pero wala naman akong cash e, just an average lower middle class guy squeezing whatever amount of intelligence he has to give the P700 plus cash na mauutang niya the most value it could get from the range of "affordable" cars the market temps him with.
sa totoo lang, you'd feel you're getting the most value for your money with the 2008 apv.
most of my other concerns on the apv's design just whizzed by as i tried my butt on all its seats. hindi tinipid ng suzuki, even the third row seats had thick foams!
i don't think driving it with the engine burning fuel just a few inches below your butt would even give you the idea that you'd be toast. noh, it won't. malamig din pati ang aircon.
greasy-handed mechanics soiling that great interior? well, i told myself that i would preempt that by putting some kind of protection before letting one actually access the engine.
confined foot area up front? well, feel ko ito. the wheel wells eat into 1/4 of that space. but your feet won't be needing that much space anyway as you drive, i told myself. if i wanted to rest, i'd get into the second row, push on the captain's seat's backsupport, and there a bed awaits me. and this is one of the features i like in the apv's seat configurations. you can actually have a bed inside your van!! two beds pa nga, and my dirty mind goes to work, hahaha!!
but the philippine variants of the 2008 apv still comes with the g16 engine. single overhead cam, 16 valve, 1600 pa rin. not electronically fuel injected to give me at least some psychological comfort. the SA entertaining me yesterday couldn't seem to present a credible fuel consumption data. he was quoting me with an 8-10 km/l consumption, but couldn't look me straight in the eyes. my present ride is a 1300 sedan that eats up 7 or so km/l. i intend to keep it, and we've learned to live with its fc.
i was only hoping that a new car would be more fuel efficient.
any thoughts? data? thank you all.
