Urgent need for mass testing | Inquirer Opinion

It is understandable that the DOH advocates the PCR test for hospitals, because each confined patient needs precise diagnosis for exact medication. But city and municipal health workers are monitoring residents in communities blindly, because they don’t have access to any test kit. They should be provided with rapid test kits for them to accomplish the “detect-isolate-treat” strategy of the government. We will flatten the curve by doing fast and mass testing in the communities, not by doing few and slow tests in the hospitals.

Even if we say that the rapid test can only correctly identify 88 out of 100 persons who are positive for the antibodies, that’s 88 infected people disabled from being “spreaders.” And even if the PCR test gives more precise results (although it can also yield wrong results), its precision advantage is cancelled out by its slowness and scarcity. While long lines of people are waiting to be PCR-tested, the undetected positive ones continue to spread the virus.

the test should be as accurate as possible because the virus is very contagious. that one false negative could be out of quarantine and infecting other people

re mass testing using rapid test kits

it may not be as accurate sa PCR but if you catch those with IgM antibodies (indicator of 1 or 2 week old infection) it's better than nothing

the point is to bring down the R0 number

if the virus R0 is 2.5 to 3, isolating those who test positive for antibodies can bring down R0 to 1.0 siguro

it slows the spread not eliminate it

General Carlito Galvez, the chief implementer of the national government’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, needs the two weeks after April 14 to ramp up massive testing and put PUIs in quarantine. They are hoping to get better numbers by end April to justify loosening the quarantine measures.


“We must increase our testing by at least 10,000 specimens per day, contact trace and isolate with the best logical and technological means available (mobile tracking, GPS, mapping, etc.).

What looks encouraging now is General Galvez himself. He seems to know what to do and is determined to get things done. We didn’t have that kind of leadership when DOH Sec Francisco Duque was calling the shots.

Kailangan talaga extension. Para mas mahilig yun mass testing ng mga target nila dahil nasa mga bahay paga tao. Pag ni-lift saka mag test kung saan saan na pumunta mga tao, tapos yun mga umuwi ng Probinsiya babalik na. Kaya dapat habang naka lockdown mag test na sila.
