Today and in the coming days you will be making decisions that have life and death consequences for every Filipino, young and old, rich or poor. As ordinary citizens we have no choice but to depend on you. We are therefore begging you, please do not fail us.
Nobody forced you to be in that position. You sought it. You have reveled in it. You and your families enjoyed its privileges. Now a crisis has come upon the world, with a potential of becoming perhaps the greatest crisis ever faced by humanity since recorded history. Regardless of whether we think you are the best set of people to lead our country in this time of grave crisis, you are there and we are stuck with you.
We do not want you to fail. We will do whatever it is in our power to support the government. The frontliners will be at the frontlines. The workers will keep the factories running. The vendors will keep selling the basic necessities. The rest of us will stay at home. Everybody will do their part. But please, lead us. Lead us properly, lead us in the best way possible.
We implore you to summon all your wisdom, all your courage, all your abilities, all your righteousness, all your humanity in responding to this Covid-19 crisis. We are beseeching you to find the best version of yourself, because anything less will not be enough.
Those of you who are incurably corrupt will find in this crisis an opportunity to further enrich yourself;
Those of you who are hopelessly power-hungry will find in this crisis opportunities for self-advancement;
Those of you who are depravingly selfish and self-centered will put your own self-interests and those of your families above those who are most in need;
Please, please, do not.
To those of you who are physically, intellectually, and morally weak, and incapable of giving your best self, we hope you find the courage and patriotism to step aside and let others more capable to do the job.
To the decent, well-meaning, and honest people in our national leadership, we hope you find the courage to assert yourself, to say “no” when no is the answer required, regardless of the consequences to your positions or political careers.
If you fail, we will all fail. Not just us, but you too. You and your families. Because this crisis, this disease, does not know class or privilege. It threatens us all.
We thank you for your service and we are hopeful that you will rise to this greatest challenge.
