‘I was stupidly overconfident’: a South Korean coronavirus survivor’s tale

-University professor Park Hyun took pains to ensure his health, but thought the outbreak was ‘not his problem’

-After recovering from Covid-19, he turned to Facebook to share his experience with friends and loved ones looking to ward off the disease

Park Hyun, a 48-year-old university professor, took pains to ensure his health. He went to the gym five days a week and maintained his personal hygiene, washing his hands all the time and “overusing” hand sanitiser – but that didn’t stop him from being infected with the coronavirus
    .

Park, who has since recovered, turned to Facebook to share his experience “to help my friends and loved ones to ward off the highly contagious virus”.

South Korea has reported more than 8,000 cases of the virus
    , along with 72 deaths.

“We must be cautious! But no panic and no fear,” Park wrote in a Facebook post on March 8. “I was naive and stupid to think that [the outbreak] is not my problem. Yes, as usual, I was stupidly overconfident.”

I was naive and stupid to think that [the outbreak] is not my problem Park Hyun

Busan City, where he lives, reported its first confirmed case of the coronavirus on February 21. The same day, Park said he felt a “very mild sore throat and very mild dry coughing”.

Over the next two days, he felt mild but growing pressure on the chest and decided to stay home and skip his daily gym visit, “not because of feeling bad but due to coronavirus patients being reported near my place”.

On February 24, he had breathing problems early in the morning, which Park said scared him as the Oncheon Church – where a cluster of patients was reported in Busan – is in his neighbourhood.

He frantically started placing calls to the health authorities, who first said he did not need to take a coronavirus test as there were long queues at test centres and there was a high risk of catching the virus. Also, his case did not appear so severe.

However, Park’s symptoms worsened, and on his third call the authorities told him to go to a nearby hospital to take a test.

Though it was early in the morning, there was already a very long queue outside the hospital’s test centre, where he was told he would have to wait in line for four hours.

“After about 30 minutes waiting in a queue, I had dyspnea [shortness of breath] again and collapsed, hitting my head on the floor,” Park wrote. He was treated for a head injury and tested for the coronavirus.

He then quarantined himself at home, and the following day received a text message confirming he had tested positive.

Park was told to stay home for another 24 hours before being admitted to a hospital for treatment, but a health official then called him to trace his movements and close contacts.

During the conversation, she realised the severity of his condition, prompting her to move Park up the queue for treatment. Close to midnight, he was warded in a negative-pressure room in the quarantine section of Kosin University Gospel Hospital’s intensive care unit.

There, he underwent a CAT scan and several other tests before he was medicated and hooked up to an oxygen tank.

Park said he was breathing a bit easier by February 26, but his chest pain was still severe.

“I felt a burning pain in my chest and stomach, although I was not sure if it was because of the drugs I took or the virus,” he wrote.

“I had a slight fever and my condition fluctuated. At first I felt as if some heavy iron plate … was pressing on my chest. The stabbing pain gradually eased to the point it felt as if someone was squeezing my chest hard.

“I sometimes felt very hungry … I knew I had to eat to survive but it was very difficult to swallow due to my difficulty breathing.”

He was discharged nine days after being admitted, and is now in quarantine for 14 days as he recovers.

Park said all the people he was in contact with the week before he was admitted to hospital, including his mother and sister, have tested negative for the virus.

He expressed thanks to the medical staff who looked after him “as if they were my family members” and “did their best to avoid causing any unnecessary pain while treating patients with injections, bringing meals to them and even cleaning their room”.

Park Chan-kyong is a South Korean journalist who has worked for the Agence France-Presse Seoul bureau for 35 years. He is now working for the South China Morning Post. He studied political science at Korea University and economics at the Yonsei University Graduate School.

Anyway, do not chabge the topic yet.

What i meant by my reply to bratpaq's photo is " first time ko nakakita ng health worker nagrereklamo " and no, nobody is asking them to man the checkpoints.

What we want is since medical emergency to, so natural medical solution dapat. Yun yung mas focus dapat ng gobyerno.

    did i change the topic?

that healthcare worker who complained about sila-pa-ba-dapat-mag-man-ng-checkpoint was reacting to people who made martial law comments

maybe the reason why you're the only one here in this thread who reacted so strongly to what that healthcare worker said coz you made a martial law comment

How certain are you na he was reacting to people who made martial law comments?

Also, i reacted kasi first time ko nakakita ng healthcare worker na nag rereklamo. i said that earlier, didn't i?

    Hindi kaya Mema lang siya?

    Also, you sound triggered.

Maybe we should change topic na. Lest we get banned. Yikes!

    My 2 cents.

The fear exists and the fear is valid. It does not help that our people don't trust this government by a large margin. Our Beloved President has sown distrust among the populace since day 1 of his term -- the case of De Lima is just one instance, I won't mention the many others anymore.

Add to that is the fact that Martial Law was really a horrifying experience for many people, and one of the worst times in our history. Maybe not to us personally, but this is like Deja Vu for those people. The mere presence of soldiers on the streets give them nightmares.

Lastly, this is a poorly planned response-- action-- to an enormous and growing problem. People can see that our officials are not on top of the situation.

So given the above 3, how do you think the government can rally the people to come together at a time like this when Filipinos need to be united the most? Our Beloved President did not work to earn the peoples' trust in the first place. Instead he worked his a$$ off to alienate more and more people. It did not have to be this way but that's the way it is. We have to accept that.

So don't blame the people, blame the government. They are just reaping what they sowed. And that's the fact.

140 have been identified, and 220 are still waiting to be identified. those 220 are the target of our movement limitation and social distancing program.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is it not correct that the SWS came out on March 6 that the net satisfaction or approval rating of this administration was excellent?

Let's assume for a moment what you said above is true, sir. But please, pray, tell me how the equitable distribution of wealth in Q.C. is connected to keeping malls (and all other business establishments where people "gather") open with shortened hours in Q.C.? You haven't answered that.

Not everyone has the luxury to avoid going to work. I totally get that. But if you can avoid it, please do. Again, only if you can. I woke up to one horror story after another this morning and while it’s true that there have been a lot of lapses and inconsistencies and no shortage of people to blame for it, at this point, you really have to reframe the situation and ask how are you helping as an individual?

This is an unprecedented situation. There are bound to be hiccups, eff-ups, and general chaos simply because the government cannot cope with the surge. And I’m not taking a dig at them by saying that. It’s just fact. We’ve seen it worldwide. Even the most developed countries had issues. This is precisely what they are trying to avoid with our healthcare system.

There’s only a small window here. If we don’t do everything we can to flatten the curve NOW, we will totally overwhelm the system and our hallways of hospitals will end up looking like this. It’s not too late. But it’s getting there.

I know people are genuinely scared or anxious. But trust me, now is not the time to panic. Now is the time to do everything you can to comply. Because what you do NOW will have an exponential effect on the outcome—bad or good. Imagine the difference of trying to put out a fire that has just started compared to an hour from now. That’s the mindset you should have. Because that’s what we are dealing with.

So please support the stay at home movement for all NON ESSENTIAL interaction. We can do this. We just need to cooperate. We need to unite. We need to all do our bit. This is everyone’s responsibility. And it starts by sharing one united message. #flattenthecurve

Or thank Master Xi again for all the help China has given the Philippines. And maybe highlight sen. Bong Go's hardworking ethic for the nth time.
