The last time I lived there, there was a military arm called the Philippine Constabulary or PC. I remember them as having a really bad reputation under Marcos. You know.... The kind where people in their custody were never seen again or they ended up dead in a canal somewhere. Whatever happened to them?

No, doc, democracy is fading in the land, and the evil that we drove away three decades ago is rearing its ugly head now.

During PNoy, it was finger pointing. Now, it's witch hunting. The essence of McCarthyism is all over the place.

Yes, that's right. But to a young republic? The same reason you buy a crib or walker to your young. He doesn't have a choice. But some people label it unpalatably-- BOBOTANTE. Rightly or wrongly, maybe so.

Here's a quote for the day that was shared online:

I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left.

Thing is, they could conceivably change the President after only 4 years. We have to put up with 6.

LP senators rally behind De Lima amid Duterte’s tirades

    August 18, 2016 09:03am

Liberal Party (LP) senators have rallied behind their partymate, Senator Leila de Lima, urging the Senate leadership to make a stand on what one described as an "unprecedented attack" on its member.

"The Liberal Party will stand by and support Senator de Lima," LP vice chair and Senate President Pro-Tempore Franklin Drilon said in a text message to reporters Wednesday night, reacting to President Rodrigo Duterte's accusations against de Lima.

Duterte earlier called De Lima an "immoral woman" supposedly for having an affair with her driver, who he said had allegedly collected drug money for her campaign in the last May elections.

Asked if the Senate should take a stand on the issue, Drilon said: "Yes, the Senate President should take a stand on this unprecedented attack on a senator."

Senator Risa Hontiveros echoed Drilon's statements, saying the Senate should rise to the occasion and defend the integrity of one of its members. Hontiveros is a senator of the Akbayan Party list which is in coalition with the LP in the Senate.

"I also hope that the Senate, as an institution, will rise to the occasion and defend the integrity of one of its members, even as it tries to find ways to peacefully and prudently resolve this matter," Hontiveros said in a separate text message.

She said Duterte's remarks against de Lima were "unpresidential" and were a "breach of parliamentary courtesy."

"It unnecessarily sets the Executive and Senate on a dangerous collision course," said Hontiveros.

"It is also a sad display of "ad hominem politics", which gave premium to personal attacks over real arguments, and appealed to prejudices rather than discourse. It betrayed the government's commitment to transparency since one of the best ways to pursue truth is through healthy deliberations driven by facts."

As a fellow woman, Hontiveros said she was offended by Duterte's remarks against De Lima, saying it was a 180-degree turn from his apology to all women who were offended by his rape joke during the campaign.

If the President would not immediately correct or take back his latest statements against De Lima, then Hontiveros said this would give the impression that the government "tolerates, if not encourages, [misogyny]."

"President Duterte must exercise great restraint in making injudicious statements. I again remind him that his public political statements have the force and effect of policy. While the President is known for his colorful language, it is not an excuse to target, without basis, a person' s integrity," she said.

"I hope that in the coming days President Duterte will make concrete steps in rectifying his statements and in building a more conducive environment for healthy and mature political exchanges," Hontiveros added.

Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, who is also part of LP, said he was saddened by Duterte's attack against de Lima

"Nakakalungkot dahil akala ko tapos na yung issue dahil nasabi ni Pangulong Duterte nung nakaraang linggo na ginagawa lang ni Senator De Lima ang trabaho nya," Pangilinan said.

(It is saddening because I thought the issue between them was over since President Duterte had already said last week that Senator De Lima was only doing her job.)

actually, we are a republic by design. there's an important distinction between democracy and republic.

democracy tends to stray from rule of law because anything goes that pleases the majority. In this case it's Duterte's majority. a.k.a. MOB rule.

republics are limited and restrained by rule of law. This system protects minorities so that tyranny of the majority is prevented.
Damn, son! Where'd you find this?

Duterte hits ‘stupid’ UN criticism of PH anti-drug campaign

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday hit out at “stupid” United Nations’ criticism of his controversial crime war that has claimed 1,000 lives, warning the global body not to interfere.

The political outsider, who swept to a landslide election victory in May largely on a pledge to kill tens of thousands of criminals, said he would continue his anti-drug crackdown despite mounting criticism, including from UN chief Ban Ki-moon.

“Why would the United Nations be so easily swayed into interfering in the affairs of this republic? There are only 1,000 (killed),” he said at an event marking the 115th anniversary of the police force.

Duterte criticized the “stupid proposition” where the killings done by drug and criminal syndicates were being attributed to his government.

Ban Ki-moon in June condemned Duterte’s apparent support for extrajudicial killings, saying they were “illegal and a breach of fundamental rights and freedoms”.

The UN’s anti-drugs office also this month said it was “greatly concerned” by reports of extrajudicial killings of suspected drug dealers and users in the Philippines.

The UN has made “a very stupid proposition”, Duterte said, warning them not to meddle in the country’s politics.
“What’s the problem? You inject politics. Only one thousand died and you put my country in peril, in jeopardy,” he said.
Self destruct ang poon PGong. Sige kalabanin mo ang UN basta wag ang BFF mo sa China.

Singit lang ako, I was born post Edsa revolution and it is really hard to know who to believe. My parents (in heaven) did not mention that their lives where bad. My officemate who is about to turn 60 says that her life is better during those times than today. My uncles too.

I do not think that they are Pro-Marcos too.

I really think that it is the fault of past admins for not including it in school curriculum.

If it is the truth, dapat sinama yan.

the point is at the end of the day, oppression, corruption and crimes is still rampant. poverty is still high.

people power is a success in giving its people a voice but does it end the other issues that crippled the country?

we can say we cant solve it overnight. yet, it seem we are ok with erap still holding a government post, the marcoses and rumualdez still having a stronghold in the north, gma is going on vacation. rampant corruption still exist in many government agencies.

you see we have failed to re-invent or change our identity. we are still the same poor and corrupt nation just without the usual bloodshed... that is if you dont consider people dying everyday from crimes or the ongoing war with the separatist group not a bloodshed.

good luck getting shafted becuase it seem you also have no confidence in the current administration. all of you experience people power as you claimed but it seem you all forgot that its success is on its sheer size, number and unity. so yeah keep fighting your own wars. 6 more years of shafting people. lube that well.
