I did my best to look into the merits of each presidential candidate, to try and see what their supporters see in them, to help me be certain about who I'll be voting for.
To be clear, I think that the current administration has taken many small steps in the right direction. They've had many booboos, but overall I think the country is better off than how it was in 2010. I'd like the next administration to build on what the current one has done right, and to acknowledge its shortcomings and rectify it.
MDS has a great resume, with a stellar academic background and extensive experience in government. No doubt this is the reason why she tops university polls, most recently DLSU's. However, while I believe she can craft great solutions to our country's ailing problems, I haven't seen how she can lead the rest of the government to carry out her goals, especially without strong political influence nor a party to back her up. Her health is also a concern for me, not because she might die in the next 6 years, but because I think her cancer has left her a mere shadow of her former mythical self. Lastly, Marcos is a line I will never cross, and I don't see any justification for someone who chooses BBM as running mate.
Binay is charismatic and connects with the Filipino in a way that Mar and MDS can only wish for. He exudes an aura that he can get things done, which is perhaps why people believe his grandiose promises. However, he has no concrete plans to back them up, so to me his words are mere wind. And lest I forget, he's unabashedly corrupt, and I know that we have better options. Though if I'm being honest, I'd like to meet a genuine Binay fan to understand why he keeps a solid 15% of the voters pie.
Duterte is the frontrunner because of two words - political will. For a time I tried to believe that he'd be able to solve the problems our current administration couldn't. His charisma has earned him the fervent loyalty of many, and a government is more effective when it has the full support of the governed. However, the closer Digong gets to the presidency, the more I see that the change that's coming isn't necessarily for the better. I'd be willing to let his gutter language pass, if only it didn't endanger our country's economic growth and diplomatic ties. He talks tough yet has failed to snag any bigwig villains. He says he's not a trapo yet his campaign backers include the same bigwigs he's not willing to go head on with. His brand of leadership has given rise to a mob of online bullies that exhibits the complete opposite of discipline and decency. And for all his promises of changing our broken system, he has nothing concrete except to say "stop".
Grace Poe has such a broad appeal because her blank slate lets voters see in her what they want to see. Those who think that the current administration did a decent job and would want continuity see her as a more charismatic alternative to Mar, without any of the admin's baggage. For those who think that change is necessary but see Digong as too brash, Grace is a tamer, more palatable agent for change. She does seem competent, and is seen as refreshing amidst all the entrenched trapos in government. But then, there's Danding. And Chiz. And the annoying mentions of FPJ every single time. All formulaic Filipino politicism, but she gets away with it because of her motherly charm. Campaign tactics aside, I think she is able to get a good grasp of the problems that our country faces (unlike Duterte who shudders when presented with data). Her inexperience makes her a risky proposition for me, but at the very least I'd say that voting for her won't put the country in jeopardy.
And then there's Mar. The man is so uncharismatic that everything he does is seen in a bad light. He presents the good things that the current administration has done (with facts and figures), but is construed as a mere apologist. He strived to fix the terribly anomalous MRT while still working with our bureaucracy, yet is seen as incompetent. He stayed for weeks trying to help out after Yolanda, yet people chose to mock his sincerity and dismissed him as epal. Few people bother to learn about how massively complicated these national issues are, but running a country was never simple. Yes, our government is still far from perfect, and Mar would be better off if he was more empathetic about acknowledging this. But remember, we're no longer the Sick Man of Asia, we're Asia's Bright Star. I can only hope that the next president will continue to build on the foundations planted over the past 6 years. Among all the candidates, Mar has the clearest and most detailed platform. Despite all the flak thrown at him, the man actually has a clean and productive track record (rise of the BPO sector, cheaper medicines, tax exemption for minimum wage earners, and so on). Mar may not be the cool and popular choice, but I believe in his ability and his cause. I'm voting for who I think will be the best for our country in the long run, and my vote goes to Mar Roxas.
Many will disagree with me, but I welcome the discourse, as long as we stick to facts and figures and avoid ad hominem attacks. May the Philippines win on May 9.
