Richard Gomez is proclaimed as the mayor of Ormoc, Leyte. Jenette Fariola-Ruedas, ABS-CBN News
Actor-politician Richard Gomez was proclaimed mayor of Ormoc City in Leyte by the board of canvassers after he defeated Liberal Party candidate Ondo Codilla.

The 50-year-old Gomez ran under the Nationalist People's Coalition.

Gomez won the mayoralty race with 53,234 votes against Codilla's 44,453, according to data transmitted by the Commission on Elections.

This is Gomez's first win in several tries for an elective post.

Party-list group Mamayan Ayaw sa Droga (MAD), which named him as a nominee, was disqualified by the Supreme Court in 2001.

In 2007, he ran for senator but lost. He again tried for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2010 but was disqualified due to residency issues.

In 2013, he lost the mayoralty race to Edward Codilla by a slim margin of fewer than 3,000 votes.

Gomez' wife, Lucy Torres, the outgoing Ormoc mayor, also secured a seat in the House of Representatives. She won as the congresswoman of the 4th District of Leyte. --with a report from ABS-CBN News' Jenette Fariola-Ruedas

    DU31 ... Change is here.

You have to admire the team that comes up with these slogans, absolutely brilliant marketing. Apparently, the netizens / internet trolls know how to go out and vote. The so-called internet trolls beats the political machinery.

Hopefully we can now go back to regular programming.

Duterte plans parliamentary system – spokesman
    Published May 10, 2016 10:00am

DAVAO CITY - Maverick Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who is leading the presidential race based on partial and unofficial count, is planning to overhaul the Constitution and will propose a shift to a parliamentary system of government, his spokesman said Tuesday.

"That will require a wide national consensus beginning with asking Congress to call for a constitutional convention," Peter Laviña told a media briefing.

"There will be major rewriting of our Constitution," he said.

That's a lot of political capital to be expended in amending the Constitution. Does he even have the numbers to back that up in Congress since they stand to lose their seats? Remember in a parliamentary government, it's the MPs who elect the prime minister or head of state. Parang hindi tama coz now people won't be able to elect a head of state via popular vote anymore.

Just a thought...what a spectacular fall for Jojo Binay and his UNA party. Imagine, he led in the surveys for President up until D30 filed for his candidacy.

Looks like voters really remembered his inability or refusal to answer for his unexplained wealth.

    +1

    Never liked that smug SOB.

It's likely we've witnessed the death throes of UNA as a political party. Good riddance!
