    hi!

i've been using the regular 20w-50 oil on my '78 beetle. i've tried petron ultron & the shell helix brand. oil change is every 2-3months regardless of the number of kilometers. it only consumes 2.5L [and no oil filter change!] some guys said that the caltex delo multigrade diesel engine oil is the better choice for the aircooled bug because it's thicker and would protect the engine internals more than the regular gasoline motor oils can. is this true? would it also be better if i use semi-syn like the valvoline durablend or shell helix blue or mobil1? how about idemitsu eco, top1 and repsol?

    thanks!

how about the 4G50series mitsu gas engines? is it okay to use synthetic 5w-40, 5w-30, 10w-40? or stick with the mineral 20w-50 and change every 5 months / 5000km [whichever comes first]?

i've been using the semi-syn mobil1 10w-40 + FRAM oil filter every 5months or 3000km [whichever comes first]. overkill?

i also want to try other oils i.e. royal purple, top1, repsol, and idemitsu. please share your thoughts and experiences on these oil brands! thanks!

Okay, thank you for the info regarding diesel oil sir. I must admit, mostly sa sinabi ng mekaniko usually ang mga nalalaman ko sa technical ng kotse. Good thing, may mga expert tsikoters dito.

Been using Shell Helix HX7 for 1 year and a half na. Has better cleaning additive IMO kasi less darker yung oil after a month of using vs R3. Less noise also for the engine, smoother ride in the first 3 months. So I can say that its better than R3 and comparable with Mobil Delvac MX. Afaik Shell Helix Diesel HX7 kasi is 5w30 na viscosity, not good for our climate and since it's CF rated only, may not provide the best protection for diesels with EGR(even though Shell say its ok). I think ayaw na lang ng shell magbayad sa API nung test kasi mahal pala yang mag-pa-approve. Kaya hindi na ako gagamit ng Shell Helix Diesel HX7.

Just to mention also, my brother-in-law who has a ford ranger xlt non-crdi (with egr) has been using Vic oil filter and OCI of 5,000kms with Shell Helix Diesel HX7 for the past 5 years and 250,000+kms in the odo and engine and performance is still very good. I guess okay naman talaga siya, ewan na lang ngayong 5w30 na rating, sinabihan ko na din siya as well as getting bosch oil filter instead of vic. Ayaw niya lang maniwala sa 10,000kms OCI. hehe

Will use Delo Sports next oil change since there is a promo (P200/ltr). hehe.

Sir ry_tower, ano pagkakaiba ng Shell HX7 and HX5? Ung HX5 pa lang kasi ang nakita ko which is rated API SL/CF. Additive lang ba ang pagkakaiba?

Yes sa ratio ng additive package kaya mas mahal HX7.

mga chong, ayos lang ba ang shell helix diesel plus sa 10 year old diesel ride ko? parang nalalabnawan kasi ako. and since madaling mag sludge oil ko for having short trips only, is it ok if i just change oil as usual? without engine flush, o kailangan na talaga?
    TIA sa mga sasagot!

Ano ba sir diesel ride mo. After reading so much I beleive depende din kasi sa ride mo yung ideal oil. Kung puro short trips, much better talaga na early yung palit mo at 5,000kms kesa extended tapos multigrade mineral oil na lang.

Hindi na ako bilib sa Shell Helix Diesel eh. Mas ok pa nga specs ng Shell Rimula R3 if you come to think of it.

Sa crosswind okay na yung shell rimula r3, caltex delo gold ultra, Mobil delvac mx or any cheap API CH-4 or CI-4 rated oil since 5,000kms ka mag-change oil.

No need for engine flush IMO.

HX5 ang ginamit ko ngayon, parang tumahimik naman at gumaan ang takbo ng 4ja1 ko parang Helix diesel plus. pakiramdaman ko lang after some kms. btw, the mechanic strongly advised that i have my engine flushed since malapot na yung oil at may gunk na talaga. i was convinced then he used Shell Rimula R1 SAE-40. i dunno how effective this is but i saw what came out after making my engine gargle.
anyway thanks a lot bro Ry and have a nice day!

Mineral , semi synthetic or fully synthetic?
