Agree, the Pajero is rally-proven in the Paris-Dakar rally. But these are short-wheel-based (AWB) highly-modifed rigs. The Everest has also been proven by Malaysian expedition teams in the desert and the jungles. But again, these were modified rigs.
Stock-to-stock, I'd still pick the Everest over the Pajero. It has a higher power-to-weight ratio. The Pajero engine is powerful but the body is just too heavy. It really sinks in the mud. And without M/T tires, it would go nowhere. The Everest, on the other hand, is a lot lighter and could thus "float" even with H/T tires. On rocky trails, again the Everest's light weight is an advantage.
Modified, well it would depend on the mods you make. But definitely, it is easier and cheaper to modify an Everest. My mods were just done by 199 ORH, a local outfitter.
One reason why offroad enthusiasts shy away from the Pajero is the lack of aftermarket mods available in the market. And if you can find any abroad, it's quite expensive.
On the other hand, the Everest has a lot of after-market mods available in the US and are priced reasonably. These are actually for the Ranger pickup but you can also use them for the Everest.
But then again, we are comparing apples to oranges here. The Everest and the Pajero is not on the same class. It should be Everest vs Montero and Explorer vs Pajero. On the latter, I have no say.![]()
