Clean with vinegar or dab of Turco, if still not clean use industrial grde hcl acid. The silting on the cover numbs the sensor w/c is just usually a thermistor wrapped in polymer.

seems like everybody is helping you chase your tail.

check the voltage at the dlc3 terminal. see link:

    Getting Started with OBD-II - learn.sparkfun.com

it is more than likely communication problem. please, give it a try and provide voltage readings after the test.

no offense to anybody trying to help.

what are the colors of the wire insulation connected to this component? is it a sensor or is fan thermo switch?

engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) will have pink wire on terminal 1 and light blue on terminal 2

    ALLDATA

on this one, the fan does not run when you unplug this sensor. this is, a negative temperature coefficient resistor or a thermistor (NTC resistor). unplugging it will simulate the coolant temperature is below freezing

this link has a very short shelf life. open link, print the information ASAP

your old pump still looks practically new.
it must be those new coolant formulations.

the trick now is, how to store that new pump, so that by the time you need one years from now, you still remember where you tucked it....
you know.. the old "i know i have one somewhere here... now where did i put it... that was back when hindi pa ako grandfather...?" heh heh.
or, go back to the store and exchange it for something else.

We won't really know the condition of the water pump motor ... Until it conks out ... So replacing it early is a good thing to do ...

Tingin ko pareho lang eh. Piliin mo na lang mas mukhang bago. That is if both are legit.

If it fits and mounts directly to the fan shroud it should be okay. Try running it direct to the battery and measure the current draw and compare. If the current draw is higher you might need to change the wire size to carry the load without overheating the circuit
