Dead man lies on an empty street at China's virus ground zero

Wuhan (China) (AFP) - A grey-haired man wearing a face mask lies dead on the pavement at ground zero of China's virus epidemic, a plastic shopping bag in one hand.

On what would typically be a crowded street in Wuhan, an industrial city of 11 million under quarantine, there are only a few passersby and they dare not go near him.

AFP journalists saw the body on Thursday morning, not long before an emergency vehicle arrived carrying police and medical staff in full-body protective suits.

The man lay straight on his back in front of a closed furniture store. Medical staff in blue overalls gently shrouded his body with a blue blanket.

The ambulance left, and police stacked supermarket cardboard boxes to hide the scene.

The dead man on the street on Thursday lay one block from the Wuhan Number Six Hospital, one of the main medical centres for treating those with virus symptoms.

A team of forensic experts who examined him were immediately sprayed with disinfectant by colleagues after removing their hazardous material suits.

In the two hours that AFP observed the scene, at least 15 ambulances passed by, attending other calls.

Finally, a white van with blacked-out windows arrived to take away the man.

The body was zipped into a yellow surgical bag, and carried into the van on a stretcher.

Staff immediately began to clean the ground as the van drove away, disinfecting the streets where the body had lain.

But in a later text message to INQUIRER.net, he said the 56 are only “events” related to the novel coronavirus. He has yet to explain what he meant by “events.”

nag i-increase ang number of people with symptoms coz as the days pass tapos na incubation period

like i said earlier in this thread sobra imposible wala pa pumasok na n-cov sa pinas sa dami ng mainlander pumupunta

kasi december pa nag umpisa kumalat ang virus sa wuhan pero january lang naging headline news

The woman, in her 40s, is believed to have contracted the virus from her husband, who returned from the Chinese city of Wuhan Jan. 12 and developed respiratory symptoms on Jan. 22 that were not immediately identified as 2019-nCoV by the doctor after seeking treatment, said Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中).

The symptoms the husband had were too mild to qualify as a suspected 2019-nCoV case and be reported at the time, according to Chen, who heads the epidemic response command center.

If people start to panic big time, the panic could kill them more than the actual virus itself. Look at the long lines at medical supply stores for masks and alcohol, etc. I've also read that some Filipinos are even panic buying at supermarkets for canned goods, etc. So government really has to be on top of things. But I understand what you mean sir.

actually gumagamit sila (China) ng anti-HIV drug laban sa n-CoV

since antiviral ung drug, sabi may bisa daw laban sa n-CoV

pero don't know if the drug is easily accessible

and you don't wanna take anti-HIV drugs unneccessarily coz may side effects yun

Suggestion lang though, don’t give people ideas. During the Anthrax scare in the US, people began hoarding Cipro, creating an artificial shortage, self medicating (and suffering the side effects) and worse, fostering antibiotic resistance from improper use.

A little knowledge is dangerous in the wrong hands…

Fear is indeed powerful.

Some people will panic talaga. Ako, aminado ako na paranoid ako pero i keep a clear head in this situation and let my logic and facts prevail over our feelings and thoughts.

The least the gov't can do is at least address our concerns properly and issue factual advisories from time to time to keep the public informed.

First to calm the nerves of the people, ban all flights from China. Mas mahirap ma contain kung meron papasok ng papasok dito. Stop the entry first or ng new possible carriers then address yun andito na.

We will be overwhelmed kung hinde I ihinto pag pasok dito ng mga mainlanders.

There's a lot of cr*p going around nowadays, and I'm not just referring to this bug.

There are those who, for whatever motives known only to them, play on the fears and anxieties of people. I don't know what they get out of that. It just makes no sense.
It's like mischievously yelling "fire!" in a crowded place (na wala naman), then getting a kick out of seeing the people fall over themselves, trying to save their lives.
