Elon Musk says ‘coronavirus panic is dumb’ as other Silicon Valley execs tell workers to stay home

Apple among companies telling employees to work from home in they are able

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk late Friday surfaced from a 24-hour Twitter break to criticize the “panic” over the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak.

The tweet quickly gathered nearly 200,000 likes and more than 40,000 retweets.

An email to Tesla TSLA, -2.90% on whether the company had any guidelines and work-from-home arrangements due to the outbreak was not immediately returned. Tesla had 48,016 full-time employees as of December, according to a recent filing.

Companies across Silicon Valley are asking or allowing their employees to work from home because of coronavirus risk, with Apple Inc. AAPL, -1.32% the latest to do so on Friday. U.S. equity markets ended another week in turmoil as investors feared the impact of the virus on economic activity.

Plans for several conferences and large gatherings worldwide have been scrapped, the latest in the U.S. being the late-Friday cancellation of the South By Southwest conference in Austin a week before the event was to start.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency this week in an effort to contain the spread of the virus in the state, where 60 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus and one person has died as of early Friday. Cases worldwide topped 100,000 on Friday.

The virus has been called a “clear headwind” for Tesla, whose expansion plans hinge in large part on demand in the Chinese market and the performance of its newly built factory in Shanghai.

Tesla shares ended the week 5.3% higher, outpacing the S&P 500 index’s SPX, -1.70% 0.6% weekly advance. Tesla has rallied 155% in the past 12 months, compared with a 7% gain for the index in the same period.

I think worldwide kulang talaga ang testing kits. Even sa US bigla na lang may sumusulpot na COVID-19 fatalities na supposedly wala naman infected cases, nalalaman na lang pag serious na. May friend ako na nag travel to/from LA recently, wala naman daw ginagawang containment sa airports if wala symptoms.

China, Korea and Japan lang ata ang medyo maayos ang numbers, every one else underreporting due to lack of testing.

not surprising since the US is like us, kung walang insurance hindi pupunta magpa-checkup until malala na.

    2. I just want to show everyone the difference between their photo of BGC today, and the photo I rushed to take this afternoon of the SAME EXACT area right after I saw their story; just so people do not panic, and cause a lot of the businesses in BGC to suffer because of their article.

That's a good example of today's narrative-driven media. They want to report that people are panicking and hiding indoors, so they post pictures intentionally taken when the streets are vacant. Evidence that runs contrary to the narrative they want to push is conveniently ignored.

Well, there's some truth in Elon's statement. The stupidity of some people is currently evolving faster than the virus. The greatest danger from this pandemic comes from public panic, not from the disease itself.
When the public panics, politicians get involved who then start relocating funds from other infectious diseases like TB, dengue, hepatitis B, etc. to combat the new hyped up virus. Such action sets the public minds at ease but it results in more deaths from other infectious diseases than the new virus could cause.
