Last year:
3/4 of people in Manaus had antibodies
scientists thought meron na herd immunity
Then....Dr. Faria and his colleagues started tracking the coronavirus when it exploded in Brazil last spring. Manaus, a city of two million in the Brazilian Amazon, was hit particularly hard. At its springtime peak, the cemeteries of Manaus were overwhelmed by the bodies of the dead.
But after a peak in late April, Manaus seemed to have gotten past the worst of the pandemic. Some scientists thought that the drop meant Manaus had gained herd immunity.
Dr. Faria and his colleagues looked for coronavirus antibodies in samples from a Manaus blood bank in June and October. They determined that roughly three-quarters of the residents of Manaus had been infected.
But near the end of 2020, new cases began surging again. “There were actually far more cases than in the previous peak of cases, which had been in late April,” Dr. Faria said. “And that was very puzzling to us.”
The researchers tested these possibilities by tracking P.1 from its earliest samples in December. By early January, it made up 87 percent of samples. By February it had taken over completely.
Combining the data from genomes, antibodies and medical records in Manaus, the researchers concluded that P.1 conquered the city thanks not to luck but biology: Its mutations helped it spread. Like B.1.1.7, it can infect more people, on average, than other variants can. They estimate it is somewhere between 1.4 and 2.2 times more transmissible than other lineages of coronaviruses.
But it also gets an edge from mutations that let it escape antibodies from other coronaviruses. They estimate that in 100 people who were infected with non-P.1 lineages in Manaus last year, somewhere between 25 and 61 of them could have been reinfected if they were exposed to P.1 in Manaus.
The researchers found support for this conclusion in an experiment in which they mixed P.1 viruses with antibodies from Brazilians who had Covid-19 last year. They found that the effectiveness of their antibodies dropped sixfold against P.1 compared with other coronaviruses. That drop might mean that at least some people would be vulnerable to new infections from P.1.
yes i've read that antibodies generated by natural infection may fade after 3 months
and yes i've read that vaccines generate more antibodies and are more durable
actually they use convalescent plasma as a benchmark
if your vaccine can generate more antibodies than amount of antibodies found in convalescent plasma then your vaccine is pretty good
BUT we're no longer talking about the amount of antibodies or how long they last
we're now talking about IF those antibodies can recognize new variants
it doesn't matter how many antibodies you have or how long they last...
if those antibodies don't recognize new variants you're gonna get sick parin

me in January:
i may be exaggerating but meron talaga reduced efficacy mga bakuna laban sa new variants
been saying that since Jan

Hindi pa tayo full throttle sa inoculation eh bawas na efficacy ng mga vaccines. By the time we reach our target 70 million for herd immunity eh immune lang sa old variants.
Sana lang yung mga darating na vaccines na hindi pa manufactured eh ma update na to new variants bago pa dumating dito.

napost ko ito dati pero nobody cares coz di pa nag sink in sa karamihan
now that the topic is brought up this morning........
this is what happens when Pfizer and Astra are challenged with regular variant and B1351 (South Africa variant)
Pfizer starts at a high level of effectiveness so even when challenged with B1351, kahit humina siya, may laban parin
Astra starts at a much lower level of effectiveness compared to Pfizer
so when challenged with B1351, it's almost useless
maari
we will find out soon
coz all those people (here in PH) who completed their 2nd dose of sinovac....
we'll see if they'll get severe covid
if they do then the vaccine wasn't protective
But vaccine manufacturer will eventually come out with booster shot right? for new variants such as SA, brazil and P.3 to update the existing vaccine.... we need to catch up.

we should expect people who completed sinovac vaccination may catch the virus and test positive
ang gusto natin malaman kung asymptomatic sila o mild lang...
pag severe... that's not very good
Okay. But can vaccine developers think in advance because virus eventually mutates and might have other sort of spikes different from the original wuhan spikes. I mean we should be one step ahead and outsmart this virus or else we will just keep on catching up.

Wait, what? Actor Mark Anthony Fernandez reportedly gets the AztraZeneca vaccine
The World Health Organization has warned the Philippine government that it should follow its prioritization list, or else the country will no longer receive vaccines from the COVAX facility.
“If we cannot demonstrate that we are following this prioritization, unfortunately, the COVAX may have to consider other options where the impact of the vaccine rollout will be more useful and practical and will contribute to saving more lives,” the organization’s representative to the Philippines, Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, said earlier this month.
It was just this week when Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romauldez was inoculated with CoronaVac, a vaccine donated by China. Romualdez defended his decision, saying that he wanted to inspire medical workers, but he will be facing an investigation from the Department of Interior and Local Government.
But politicians jumping the vaccine line has become the norm. CNN Philippines reported that Mayor Elanito Peña of Minglanilla, Cebu was also jabbed with AstraZeneca. Three mayors from Bohol province were also reportedly inoculated: Mayor Victoriano Torres of Alicia, Mayor Virgilio Mendez of San Miguel, and Mayor Arturo Piollo II of Lila.
