I don't want to worry much about editing, though I also don't mind doing some editing. Another friend who I talked to before I got home and who has the D70 says he used to set it at raw for editing purposes, but now uses jpeg because of a certain software (I forgot the name) he is using that can now edit jpeg pics already.
Sorry, but RAW beats JPEG hands down regardless of software.

I should also add that if you're not planning on advancing far up the Canon product line as far as their USM lenses and prosumer bodies go, you might be better off with the D40x. The Canon gives the most flexibility and "best" upgrade path, but the D40x gives the greatest short-term results.

but for its price the nikon D40/D40x really made damage to the entry level DSLR....

get the feel for the cam.. i did... when i was at hidalgo dalawang cam din pinagpipilian ko...i choose what's comfortable and what's easy to use... even for my wife...
Kimpoy, that's what I am thinking, sayang yung existing gears ko. Pero with regard to the feel for the cam, cramped yung feeling ng hand ko when handling the 400D, yung position ng shutter button niya forces you either to bend your pointer finger if your surround your palm around the grip, or let your finger stretch out more naturally but your palm has to have a gap in between.

Ito ang sabi ng friend na sumama sa akin sa hidalgo. If I buy the D40 with the 2gb SD card, plus SB400 flash worth 6K, I save 7K versus the 36K 400D. D40X, on the other hand, is 33K +6K na SB400 flash, I add 3K for a smaller better handling camera.

Hayyy, tempting choices, valid points given by differing opinions.

    Bossing Altec,

Think twice on getting the D40 or D40X. Once you'll start buying some lenses, you'll disappointed that there are el-cheapo good lens (e.g. 50mm f/1.8) that cannot be automatically focus with the D40/D40X.

SB-400 speedlight, if you'll require bounce flash then this model cannot cater your need. You may consider SB-800 or SB-600.

The 400D (Canon EOS Kiss Digital X in Japan) - body only - costs around 72,000 - 89,000 yen last time I checked - 'bout a week ago 'coz I was also thinking of asking a friend of mine (Japanese) to kindly get me one and I'll just wire transfer the payment to him once I received the camera.

At 89,000 that would be around US$ 740-745...so that's around Php 35K+. Manuals, software & quick guides are all in Nihonggo.

    MBT: Ano, decision na! hehehe

Altec: Any EF mount lens would work (completely, metering, AF, etc) on EOS bodies. EX series flash will work fine as well.

As for which one to get, don't bother asking others bro kasi it's your money... Owners of each brand will try to sway you towards one or the other anyway.

Based on your list, the 400D makes the most sense, since you have a lens already, don't get the kit nalang siguro so that you can spend the extra dough on CFs and stuff.

As for megapixel count, while yes, RAW is superior to JPEG, if you've tried taking 1GB worth of RAW files and need to process all of them, it's a real pain in the tush... 10 vs 6, like what your friend said, chances are, you won't need 10mp, I've printed 14x18" prints with a 6MP with no issues of quality and resolution at all. I doubt if most hobbyists will really need anything more than 6 anyway.

As for those asking whether or not to get units outside the country, well, all I can say is, if you think the price difference is big enough, then go for it, but don't complain if you can't replace a lemon unit locally (let's say the lens backfocuses or gives a wrong exposure, etc.)

Regarding the D40, there are a lot of lenses that are compatible with it anyway... You really have to ask yourself "how many lenses will I really buy anyway?" If you'll probably own 2-3 lenses tops (ultra wide - walkaround - tele), then just get the any body you feel that's "sulit".

A lot of Canon folks don't want to commit to EF-S lenses because "what if I go full frame, EF-S won't fit".. Chances are, most of those users will never jump to a 5D/1D series anytime soon anyway.

I've been considering shifting to Pentax actually mainly because of built-in IS... I'm not a pro and won't be one anyway, I need something to cure my shaky hands... A decent L-lens with IS costs me the same price as the K10D already hehe.

and to top off what theveed has already said....

what's important is what will make you happy... if you think that the 400d will do that... then go for it. ;)

but in reality... it doesn't matter what system you go for... for as long as it suits your needs and for the most part... it doesn't matter what equipement you have... it's how you use it. :D

Compares the d40 vs d40x vs d80 vs canon 400D
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm
    compares the d40, d50, d70, d80, d200, canon 5D and 400D

These are two websites that helped influence my decision to go for the D40. My canon speedlite and lens will stay with my canon eos88 film slr. Anyway, the EF lens is just a 28-80mm, which would mean around 40-120mm when installed in the 400D.

From the websites, picture quality output of the d40 is quite competitive with the 400D, and based on my personal view, I agree with the website comments
that the 400D loses out on the kit lens. You have to upgrade lens to maximize the 10MP of the 400D. And as what you guys said to get the feel, after I held on to the 400D and the d40, the d40 feels more comfortable to hold than the 400D. Feeling ko gripping the 400D for a long time, my fingers may feel arthritic! Anyway, with the d40 price plus the extra sb400 flash, will still have extra moolah to invest in a longer lens, though the 18-200mm's price is way way out of budget as of now.

To compare prices again, hidalgo offered 36K for the canon 400D with kit lens (versus local 400D at 44K), while the d40 is priced at 25K, while someone offered me 3 months warranty only at 23K with a 2gb sd card, gray market brand new. With watsons at hidalgo (beside henry's) offering the sb400 at 6,000, my cash out with the d40 will only be 29K. Was willing to fork out 36K, so still have 7K leftover, which actually is almost 9K, with a 2gb card valued at P1,500-2K. With the flash, I don't intend to buy it yet. Have plans to go to Hongkong in July. Tingin tingin na muna ako doon.

Walang atrasan na ito! I hope tama ang decision ko.
