Carpio was more senior to Corona, but he rightfully abstained from the selection process of choosing the next CJ when Reynato Puno retired. But I'm also hoping that he ecline the nomination and/or appointment, for the sake of unity.

Binay says acting CJ Carpio 'a landmine'

MANILA, Philippines – A landmine. This is how Vice-President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday described acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio amid reports that he could become the permanent chief magistrate.

It was the first time that Binay spoke up about Carpio after he took over as acting chief justice last week.

Carpio, being the most senior among the justices at the Supreme Court, is acting chief justice after the former chief magistrate, Renato Corona, was convicted by the impeachment court.

Binay did not elaborate on why Carpio is a landmine. He said the next chief justice should come from the academe since he should not only be knowledgeable in law but also in administrative work.

It also doesn't follow, he said, that the number two man in the Supreme Court will be the next chief justice citing the case of Artemio Panganiban.

Corona earlier accused Carpio of conspiring with Malacañang to push for his impeachment and ouster. He said Carpio had long wanted to be appointed chief justice.

Former Arroyo spokesperson and Inquirer columnist Rigoberto Tiglao earlier claimed Binay is the real target of the Corona impeachment trial. He cited a source who said the appointment of Carpio as chief justice could affect a pending electoral protest filed by Mar Roxas against the vice-president.

Avelino Cruz was the head of Mar Roxas' legal team called Bantay Balota during the 2010 elections.

Cruz is the co-founder of CVC law together with Pancho Villaraza and Antonio Carpio.

Binay arrived from Kuala Lumpur and the US on Tuesday. He said the Malaysian government has spared three Filipinos from the death sentence.

Another Filipino, Eliza San Gabriel, was also sentenced to death for drug smuggling in Malaysia. She is now receiving assistance in filing her appeal before the proper court there.

The Vice-President said the newly-formed United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) coalition will be meeting next week to thresh out rules on no coalition with other political parties.
