imho the presumptive president shouldn't have said that we won't go to war with China. i felt that that remark kind of weakened whatever bargaining power we had on the negotiating table. At best, it didn't really help the morale of our military, or that of the people involved in the disputed islands issue.


Just giving Duterte the benefit of the doubt: he has this habit of needing to give an answer or retort to all questions/issues thrown at him, even if the response is not worded properly, overly simplistic, or just plain wrong. i suppose for a tough guy like him, a delayed response, admission of guilt, etc. is a sign of weakness.

imho, people expect more sophisticated, comprehensive answers to complex problems, and when he responds with very simple answers, that turns people off; when he says something, then backtracks or is not able to back it up, that's not good either. There's no harm in responding that a particular issue is complex, and he will need to discuss it with his cabinet.

Everytime I read these sentiments about how its useless to fight back, I always recount how the the Chinese eventually triumphed against Japan in the 1930s-1940s. After enduring countless defeats and retreats, China decided to force a major showdown with the Japanese at Shanghai in from August-November 1937. Back then China was rather backward, enduring humiliating treaties, practically under a collection of local warlords and constantly being bullied by a more advanced Japan. Now the only help China had was Germany and the USSR in the form of training and some investments although even they were starting to leave since Japan was allied to them and in the case of the USSR, they were negotiating a treaty. The western powers like the US, UK and France were apathetic as they believed it was only a matter of time before Japan would win the conflict and China was percieved as a pushover anyway.

So in Shanghai, to show the western powers China has had enough and get them to support his war, Chiang Kai Shek decided to make a stand. He sent his best, German-trained units and fought the Japanese for over 3 months.Eventually they were defeated and he lost his best men, but it galvanized the rest of China and the western powers to start sending him aid. And needless to say the rest is history.

Right now, the US, Australia, Japan and even France has our back with regards to the WPS dispute. Now we have to make a stand and borrow a page from China itself. Our friends got our back, but we ourselves have to stand up against the bully.
