Medyo controversial pa la itong topic na ito about turbos and cooling down.
Got this article from another thread dito sa tsikot:
http://ruby.inquirer.net/roadtrip/di...=0717news2.php
and I quote:
"Myth #3: You have to let a turbo diesel engine idle for two minutes before you turn it off.
Fact #3: This is a current myth that has a basis of fact stemming from many years ago. In the early days of turbochargers, a two-minute cool down at idle allowed the turbocharger to dissipate any remaining spinning inertia and the oil circulation cooled the bearing. Today's turbo-diesels are a different story. There is really no reason to "cool down" a turbo-diesel these days, but you won't hurt anything by doing it either."
Kayo ba do you practice cool downs? How many minutes or seconds?
GREEN HORNET, Sir thanks po for your reply and also to Sir ianmitsulancer...
I decided to get one... talagang mas maganda nga ang MONTY compared to FORT 09, No offense po sa mga my Fort...
I visited both showroom mas fresh ang MONTY kesa sa FORT. even dough Quality puts the name on TOYOTA pero same us din namn sa MITSUBISHI... anyway my last concern is sa mga MONTY owners kamusta naman po yung aircon kasi diba po 1st row and 3rd row lang po ang my aircon kamusta naman po ung cooling system for GLS unit?...
THANKS PO ULIT AND GOD BLESS....
Mga Bro, here is some good information about why we need to cool down the turbos:
"The number one cause of turbo failure is oil "coking". Oil "coking" occurs when a turbocharger is not properly cooled down and the oil that normally lubricates the center cartridge heats up and forms residue"
- After a good use of the Turbo, your turbo will naturally have an increased temperature since after all the job of a Turbo is to recirculate Exhaust gases in order to compress air hence the boost.
- This increased temperature in the turbo MAY cause oil to undergo a phenomenen called "coking". As I quote HKS:
Synthetic Oil helps a lot since Synthetic Oil is resistant to Oil Coking. As for me however, I havent switched to Synthetic oil just yet. I will switch to synthetic oil once my Monty has been properly broken in where in the valves/internal bearings/valve seats/internal motor have properly been seated with my kind of driving. THat being said, this will mean the next 5k check up.
- The residue will inadvertently cause the bearings in your Turbo to wear down prematurely, because this will cause unnecessary friction in the bearing.
- What needs to be done in order to avoid oil coking is to cooldown the temperature of the turbo by letting the turbo ingest cooler air and letting the oil lower its temperature down a bit so that there wont be any residue IN the bearings (hopefully if there are residue the oil filter should be the one to collect it NOT the turbo.)
- What I personally do since i still haven't installed a Turbo Timer yet (coz im being picky about the brand) is when i know that I am going to park already I tone down the engine already give it time to rest from whatever driving you did by slowing down near the parking area. When I am properly parked, I let the engine on for about 20-30 secs before i turn it off. This requires discipline though. This is far different discipline coming from our old all-motor cars wherein you park...shut off the engine....get out....hit the alarm button.
For those not satisfied with this information, you can always approach the experts on turbo such as Mato Tan of Matonetics, the people from Autoplus, heck you can even approach Mike Potenciano of MP Turbo. All of these guys are nice guys (i havent talked to the main men of Autoplus just yet but im sure they are as nice) especially Mato as I have spoken to him several times when my brothers and I were still active in the Legal Drag racing circuit at Manila Harbor Center. He is not mayabang and he doesn't give you B.S. He will give you good information about anything car related. Same goes for Mike P. as he is a cousin of a good friend of mine. It is easy to know that Mike is a nice guy kasi when you approach him, the first things you will see are his HUGE teeth smiling back at you.
Anyway, I hope i have shared useful information with my fellow Monty owners.
JPG 111, have you tried 4H long drive already? It also gives you some level of comfort/safety when driving in damp/wet roads, it literally hugs the road. Imagine what it can do with NITTO 420's strapped on to its feet...like running shoes on Prefontaine.
I hope this helps!!
Adios Panieros!
Here is another post coming from a Pilot maintaining Turbocharged engines:
1st. What is coking? Coking happens when a hot turbo charger spinning at 10k-13k RPM is shut off and oil flow stops coating the fins of the charger. The residual oil in the turbocharger thickens and becomes burnt on. coating the fins and inner wall of the turbocharger. Overtime the turbo charger will loose power and the ability to spin at optimum speed due to residue from the oil building up.
2. When finishing a spirited run take it easy on the way home trying to keep the engine under 3k RPM on the way home. Why as you drive home the Turbo has time to cool with 3 things Airflow, Continous oil lubercation, and the spin down produces less friction. Less spinning equals less heat.
3. When you are in the driveway let it idle for aprox a minute.
4. Change the oil every 3-4k on the engine. Synthetic Oil helps alot. Better resistance to heat and thermal breakdown.
These proceedures will insure that your turbochager produces many more horses in the future,,,,

MONTY OWNERS....
My question lang po ako about sa airson diba po 1st and 3rd row lang po ang may aircon... Kamusta namn po ang cooling system hindi naman po ba mahirap palamigan? and my differences po ba yung cooling system ng GLS sa GLS SE?
Im getting my GLS Monty this week...
Thanks po inadvance for the reply...
Thanks for the tips on the turbo cooling Frontier922. Ako rin naman I practice turbo cooling ever since I read the advice of fellow monty owners like KCBoy.
I don't have a turbo timer but I do idle for a minimum of 30 seconds before shutting off the engine.
Yun lang nga, like it was mentioned, it takes discipline lalo na pag mukha kang engot sa mga kasama mo or di kaya when you gas up and you have to wait for a minute or two before you can start filling up the gas tank kasi you're still waiting for the turbo to cool down.![]()
Regarding the aircon, my experience is that the cooling is sufficient up to the 2nd row even without turning on the 3rd row aircon. I've no need to turn on the 3rd row because I've never used the 3rd row to carry passengers, only cargo. Let's see during the summer months next year, as that will really put the aircon to the test.
Bakit kaya ang tagal nung 4x2 dalhin dito sa atin. I hope they'd put a VGT though (upgradeable kaya yung turbo nito?). Sayang kasi ang lakas ng makina 3.2 could produce north of 250hp, 2.5 around 200hp.
Paniero,
Sa GLS SE kasi it comes with climate control. So when you set it simply to AUTO it will adjust to the necessary temperature that you set it with. As it reads in the manual there are 2 thermal sensors (1 front 1 back) that will tell the A/C that it needs more cooling.
Over all, the A/C is very cold. I rarely open the rear A/C, and if I do its because my car was left in the parking lot of greenhills na hindi covered tanghaling tapat. And i guess you know how shitty hot that gets....
But once climate control sets in ang bilis lumamig ng cabin.
My wife always thinks that the third row is always on. i have to show her the switch that its off.
Congrats on your new monty!
Sa mga new owners, how long did you wait to get your unit. Kelan kau nagpareserve at san kau kumuha?
Dude,
I reserved mine first week October at Citimotors Alabang and to make things "faster" I did In-house financing. They gave me the run around for 2 months. Kesho..."next week meron dadating...SURE NA!.." alas, olats.
So 2 months waiting prompted me to search around ALL dealers. In doing so I finally found one freshly delivered by PAMCOR to a Dealership in Dasmarinas Cavite. But they wouldn't give it to me if i wasn't using In house financing...luckily (or unluckily) mine was applied through In house. It took me 2 hours to get my car in the same day.
In house offers a higher monthly but its alright with me as I was able to get the ride that i wanted.
Once I told my agent that i already had mine and i was pulling out of Alabang...he finally came clean...
So a word of advice....do the leg work...don't leave it up to your sales agents....they will always be railroaded by "a higher power" specially now that the monty is slowly becoming a rare commodity.
Hope this loooong answer...answers your question...
Adios!
Would there be any issues / problems if I purchased from a provincial dealer and have it maintained here by Diamond Motors?
