    Huwag overexaggerated, huwag tell hearsays...

I drive an automatic SUV and my concern is overheating my brakes unless I learn how to engine brake using the paddle shifters. What's a safe speed on the way down? Thanks.

every time i go to a place that i havent been for a long time, i always say that "DI NA SIYA GAYA NG DATI"... last time i went to baguio, yun ang sinabi ko... last time i went to subic, pareho rin... last time i went to clark, yun din sinabi ko... last time i went to pagudpod, yun din sinabi ko... last time i went somewhere, i would always say the same thing...

can you actually name a place na pagbalik mo after a long time eh pareho pa rin??? and usually ang di pagkakapareho ay in a negative way... we, residents of metro manila, are blind if we think that our place is not filthier than baguio or any other place... the traffic and pollution in baguio is nowhere near the one that we are experiencing here... everyday!!!!

having said that, i concur that, really, baguio is not as pristine as before... it is not as friendly to nature-trippers anymore... but i would trade our heavenly manila to live in baguio.... anytime...

The speed still depends on you, if you're a bit unsure of your driving skills, you can drive to Tagaytay and get a feel of driving up and down mountain roads. I would suggest you take Marcos Highway for your first drive to Baguio, just try to be in Baguio before noon as it's usually foggy on Marcos Highway at 1 to 2 pm.

I have no experience with paddle shifter but I drive an X-Trail. I simply turn the overdrive off on the way down and switch from D to 2 when needed.

    That's more like it, bro.

Baduy nga ang A/T lalo na sa pababa (ng Baguio, in this case)...

Pag M/T, magandang pahiyawin ang makina....

+1. I got to practice heel and toe downshifting on our Vios on the way down via Kennon. Ang hirap kasi malalim gas pedal pero masaya.

40km/hr OK? What gear would that be? Or too slow? I heard Antipolo is also a good place to practice. Thanks.

My very first trip to Baguio was in 1988 (or thereabout). naku, talagang ibang-iba yung baguio noon compared sa ngayon. the air is colder but milder... and the pine smell really permeates the air. we were on a tourist bus then since it's a field trip, and just after the lion's head we opened the windows and maamoy mo na talaga ang simoy ng baguio. that time, nandoon pa ang mga americans sa CJH, pero in-open na nila sa public as PR na rin kasi nga medyo matindi na ang anti-bases sentiments lalo sa senado. i really admired the american staff houses then, especially that time di pa ako nakarating ng US and it was the closest thing to being in america. bukas pa noon yung bowling alley doon, and you can see the american kids playing sa mini-golf course. ganda ng grass sa greens mahihiya ka tumapak para mag-picturan. all those are memories na lang kasi it's overrun by business interests na. us filipinos seems to don't like open spaces. basta me bakante titirikan. spot on yung pagkadescribe about sa pagkakalbo ng mga bundok. from afar sa biglang tingin smokey mountain (without the smoke pero me fog naman). kapag tinitigan mo shanties pala. nung first time ko doon, punta kami UP Baguio nagkakagulo. me demolition pala. ngayon do as you please na lang yata. last time ko dito was april last year lang. well, sana nga me mga improvements na pag makabalik ulit.

about driving naman... i drive an A/T sedan and wala naman ako naging problema kahit apat sakay at sa kennon pa kami dumaan paakyat at pababa. ang iwasan lang yung mga mabagal na sasakyan esp. trucks kasi nawawalan ka ng bwelo paakyat, at sa pababa naman sa halip na dere-derecho ka lang mapipilitan ka mag-preno ng mag-preno. kaya kelangan talaga alis ka dito mga 2am at the least. pababa naman mga after lunch pwede na,

I used a much heavier car with a full load of passengers. My driver never used manual mode either. Just left it on D. Modern cars really make mince meat out of what was once a 'difficult' climb/descent.

Camp 6 and Camp 7 have the steepest inclines but with all the switch backs it should not pose any difficulty.

And paddle shifters are the BOMB. just Pull or press the left paddle shift to Downshift to a lower gear. try it now. its fun!!!! Watch the rev counter rise at your command!
    Very reassuring. Thanks.

When driving up north, it's actually much nicer than driving to Lucena where there are more suicidal buses. Just be aware of the following when you're on Mc Arthur Highway:
    - Palay being dried on the shoulder (pag maganda panahon)
    - Trikes driving in the middle of the road
    - The oncoming vehicles are generally faster than those you'd encounter on the two lane highways down south so you have to gauge the speed more when you're passing.
    - Bus and jeeps may stop suddenly near populated areas so don't make tutok.

I've had my share of tricycles during my trip to Zambales -- very annoying. Thank you for the pointers.

the point is that the reason we go travel on vacation is to experience something better, to escape the usual negatives we see every day. if we are going to see the same where we are going then we ask why? WHY do i spend much time going there, get tired on the trip, spend hard earned money IF I WILL FIND THE SAME THINGS I AM TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM? we are not saying manila is better. we go to baguio to escape manila hoping that we will not to find the same traffic, the same filth, the same mismanagement. why bother when i can always turn the setting of the aircon in my room to full and make it 10 degrees C without bothering with a 5 hour trip.

tricycles in zambales drive on the rightmost side of the road and give way when you sound your horn. i know, i just got back from Iba today. it is the tricycles that hog the middle of the road, making it difficult for faster going vehicles to overtake that is the problem.

try driving on mac arthur hiway from tarlac city to villasis pangasinan, or from san fernando pampanga to dinalupihan. tricycles there will not budge an inch, some will even kick your fender.

Just don't do slalom race on the way down. Make sure to take advantage of the engine brake on the way down, we don't want our brakes overheating.

can you name a place here in the philippines that has not deteriorated (nature-wise) in the last ten years? a place you visited 10 years ago that up to now is the same thing... or better... i havent found one... if you can find one, please share to us, so that we can visit it also...

almost every place i visit here in the philippines eh pumangit (environmentally speaking), a place i visit regularly in pangasinan doesnt have the field of lush trees anymore, they were replaced by small houses and sari sari stores... and this is true in all places i go to...

my point is that all places here in the philippines are deteriorating... baguio is deteriorating as much as any place in the philippines (actually any place in the planet). If a person's reason of not going to some place is because it is not as it was years ago, then there is no reason to go somewhere else... yes, our only option would be to stay in our own rooms and lower the temperature and hopefully we can experience a better baguio there...

i am different though... i like baguio, it is not as it used to be 20 years ago when i went there the first time but it is still a go-to town for me kahit may mga basura pa (sanay na rin ako sa basura dito sa amin eh hehe)... i will still regularly go there, more than twice a year if possible... ika nga ng mga matatanda... "i-enjoy mo pa yan hanggang andiyan pa kesa magreklamo"

100% agree sir, even un auntie ko nagtataka baket madalas ang overtake sa kanan instead sa may kaliwa, sabi ko nalang eh kung flash ko yan or businahan di gigilid yan, nakakapagod lang even un ibang sasakyan ganyan na gawi ng pag overtake, dami gumagawa nyan sa mc arthur highway so nasanay nalang ako specially sa part ng San Fernando- Angeles..Tarlac naman mas ok un mga tricycle although meron pa din pasaway
