    Hi,

I have a kia sedona 2003 (gasoline v6 engine) with 50k+ mileage. I bought it 5 months ago second hand at kia cebu and just used from office to home and vice versa which is around 10km round trip ride. The van was running fine but when I start the engine this morning I could hear a knocking sound inside the engine. Similar to a pop corn being cooked. The sound gets worst as you step on the accelerator. And the van has no power, after running few meters the engine stops. I had it looked by my neighbor mechanic and he said its the spark plugs but advised me to have it changed by kia since the tools used are different and I went to kia to have someone came over. The kia mechanic agreed that its the spark plugs and replaced it but the problem still occurred. They also checked the coils and the high tension wires, its ok but the problem still there. They checked the air in-take and etc. but the problem is still there. I ended to have the van towed back to my house. Anyone encountered a similar problem? Please advise how to fix the problem and shop recommendation. Thanks.

HAPPY

i was thinking of getting a carnival/sedona. but after just a few minutes of looking thru this thread, i am beginning to get the idea that the car was built around problems... is it faulty design or poor build quality? i had an office mate once. he said his carnival stayed longer in the repair shop than in his garage. i thought he was kidding...
or is it possible, the cars i see here are just a select few that are sold over and over again, changing owners.. that the majority of carnivals out there are as trouble-free as the japanese..

sedona is more refined than the carnival.. most problems encountered with the carnival are already solved in the sedona.. if your getting 2nd hand get the sedona M/T..

i had a carnival before wala naman problem at kung meron man eh may solutions available...

yung carnival ko before 2nd din yun nabili sa kakilala namen na medyo mayaman.. dami nila cars like toyota and bmw sedans but the funny thing is yung kia carnival ang gamit na gamit nila.. iniingatan ata nila yung mga toyota at bmw nila kasi bka masira agad..

If you are looking for trouble-free like japanese van, carnival/sedona is not the right choice. Reliability of Toyota and Honda can't be found in Kia Carnival/Sedona. I have Sedona LS '02 with almost 90K mileage now, it didn't cause me problem like stalling on the middle of the road, but I had replaced more spare parts than the Honda car.

My existing problem is on the aircon rpm actuator (not sure if this is the right term), which was never fixed by Kia Pasay. It broke on the second year where the car is still under warranty. So when the air compressor is on, the RPM is lower. Even the service of Kia casa is not comparable with Honda & Toyota. They are courteous but the mechanic are not top caliber. Quality control of Kia assembly line (Korea?), is not the Japanese grade. This is my experience...

BTW, if anyway can help on the aircon actuator, will surely appreciate. Thanks!

My former ride also had that problem, after the warranty. I was forced to replace it. I already forgot how much. After they replaced it, it didn't break down again. But then, my sedona had so much problems that it was more in the shop than out, so the replaced actuator never was tested as the car was not used as often as I wanted it.

Bottom line, I am happy to have traded it in. I miss its supple suspension, though.

to replace the actuator can be a DIY job. you can buy the original actuator at goodgear. in our case. kia pasay told me that it was the actuator that was busted. so i replaced it on my own. but only to discover that the original one was still working. the problem was that there was no ground. so i conneceted the grounding wire from the actuator to the body. then it was fine. cost of actuator was around 400 (not exactly sure cuz this was 3 years ago).

to locate the actuator. trace the black rubber vaccum tube from the injection pump to the actuator. for the sedona, it's located beside the fuel filter. hope this helps

if your looking to replace your fanbelts. i would strongly suggest you get other brands like gates or bando. at the moment. the only belt i'm using in our sedona that is contitiech is the timing belt (a/c and power steering are all bando). before i was puzzles why the casa would recommend replacing the timing belt every 60k km (unlike japan cars every 90-100k km). but now i know why. even if the timing belt has not reached 60k km. it was all cracked up. contitech is made in germany. but its possible that the material they used is not compatible for our climate.
