Thanks so much for the detailed reply gti. We are now finally closing in on a 2008 swb. I checked the casa records may check engine light daw dati at 28k km, recommendation of the casa was to replace the crdi sensor , pero they sell the entire assembly daw. Also to replace the fuel pump.

Is this a common problem? Im biased against the casa and thinking they are out to make money lang. What are the possible causes and remedyo for a check engine light?

Edit: And is there a way to use the power doors manually? i.e.naka off ang power and manual mode sya. Anybody doing this and okay naman?

I remember the Carnival having a check engine light before. In fact I was the one who brought it to Wheels Inc E. Rod for assessment. I have to say that service there is very good. Can't say the same for their Hyundai counterpart. The lines are just too long. The check engine light turned out to be due to the fuel filter needing replacement. I ended up having it done outside. If the check engine light is on constantly, try having it checked outside the casa and see what they have to say. I'm sure parts will be easy to source. My relative's Carnival doesn't have the automatic doors. But AFAIK, you can turn the power off and use it manually.

Thanks and appreciate the lighting quick reply!

Just to add to the complication, when I asked our suking neighborhood mechanic to come along for a viewing, he replied "sirain yan"

    LOL

Is the check engine light issue still not yet resolved? What is the mileage of the unit? If there are problems, perhaps it would be prudent to take a look at other units. The car's resale value will only ever go down, and it wouldn't hurt to consider other options.

As far as I know, the Carnival's Achilles heel is the electrical department. Otherwise, nothing else is sirain as long as the car is properly maintained.

I finally closed the deal two weeks ago. No check engine light. Whew. And my mechanic did a 180 when I showed him the unit.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it drives very well. Ang gaan dalhin and is a joy to drive. My wife and kid are very happy with it, as am I.

My first challenge now is to fold the other seats. I can easily fold one of the second row seats, but am.stumped with the rest. I even do it the bwelo way by letting the seat back collapse into the bottom to tumble. No luck with the other two.

Last row is even worse, I can only fold down the back but not tumble it. Internet search tells me that there is a cable that needs to be tightened or something. Di ko PA napagawa. May konteng kalampag don sa harap, nothing to worry about. Tires are original from the factory pa so will change those as well.

Change oil coming up, manual says 10W30 but have some spare multigrade 0w20, ok lang naman yon no?

Also found very light surface rust near the door drains-malapit kasi sa dagat nakapark to. So I guess my first diy will be sanding that down, rust converter, primer and paint it hehe

Finally, did anyone here install an oil catch can? Thinking of doing this mod.

P.s. so happy the doors are manual, less potential headaches. As expected the overhead switches are made of brittle plastic, naumpog lang ako and a part fell off lol

Congrats on your new ride! Indeed, it drives very much like a car, and is not cumbersome at all. I remember the seats being like that when the Carnival was first bought last year. But it was nothing that a trip to Banawe didn't fix. Though I wasn't aware on what was really done since I wasn't there. However, the 2nd row seats have always required bwelo in order to tumble. 3rd row seats were very heavy to move, especially if you're doing it inside the car rather than beneath the tailgate. Not sure how it is with the SWB version.

    You're very welcome.

I find the engine performance to be really good. Definitely far from a Vios and a match for a 4 cylinder Accord, without the fuel cost penalty too. I notice that there is hardly any turbo lag despite not having VGT, with excellent throttle response. Is yours a matic or manual? In a trip to Baguio, I caught the tranny hunting gears when left in D, seemingly not knowing when to hold and when to shift, sometimes resulting in losing power while negotiating sharp inclines due to delayed holding of a higher gear. Manual override was definitely a boon in this case, making all the difference in the world in terms of climbing power.

Matic. I have reached a point in my life that if cars reliably drove themselves, I would do that all the time haha thanks for the tip re baguio and gears, very good to know

By the way, is there a way to kill the "always on" feature of the cigarette power outlets? I plan on putting a dashcam and having it always on will drain my battery. I looked at the manual and Google, no joy. Last resort ko na rin for that is banawe

it's easy po, to install a switch on the power cord, so that you do not have to push to on and pull to off, from the socket.
the switch is available in the mall hardware stores. and if you are handy with your hands, you can install it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping there would be a way to do it that it's automatically linked to the ignition of the car. Like it is in other cars, para wala na akong iisipin hehe

All of our newer vehicles seem to be like this. I've noticed that the extra, dedicated 12V socket still works even without the ignition key. But the cigarette lighter socket stops working when the key is pulled off. Why don't you try it?

And it works! I actually didn't think to try that. Thanks GTI

I also sprayed the seats with wd40, it was a long shot, but surprisingly they now fold and tumble yay!

Here is another long shot, the front passenger door seems to not obey the central lock and alarm. This isn't a feature right? If I unlock that door it via key, it unlocks the entire van. But if i manually lock/unlock the lock from inside, nothing. It also doesn't work with the driver and passenger side locking switches

Good for you! It must've been that the seats haven't been folded or used for quite some time now.

In my relative's Carnival, the left sliding door doesn't obey the power lock. AFAIK, they've taken to locking it manually as of the moment. Perhaps the power lock mechanism is one of the Carnival's weak points? I wonder if it'll take replacing the power lock mechanism to solve this problem...

Baka nga it's the locking mechanism that's at fault. I'll post an update here once I get that sorted out. Hopefully it helpsyour relative

True enough it was the mechanism. Brand new is 2.6k but no stock in fronte and they even called some other shops to no avail.

Had to have it opened and the motor, which surprisingly the size of a tamiya mini racer motor, changed with one from a surplus unit. Total damage for the surplus Japanese assembly, which was taken apart to get to the motor, was 1.2k. Not exactly cheap.

I wish I had kept my old tamiya hyper dash motors, kung alam ko lang haha

I was referred by the guys in fronte to a freelancer there, I forget his name. Older dude with only two lower teeth. I just can't remember his name. Ok naman sya. Damage was 350 for the labor, kasama na don palit ng isang signal light and sya naghanap ng surplus locking mechanism (I assume may tubo na sya don but ok na for the convenience).

He got stumped putting it back together coz the motor would crank but not activate the lock. There was another older guy, mang Ben iirc, who was looking and advising him what to do. And his advise was right on the money, naayos din. So binigyan ko nalang ng tip but he was not expecting anything. Kilala sila don sa fronte and I assume nandon sila lagi.
