Part 2 of the Cruze Review
Fuel Efficiency: I use the high octane variety (Blaze and Velocity) whenever possible. The Cruze consumes 7 to 8 kilometers per liter for city driving (Makati-sucat). It gulps 9 to 11 kilometers per liter on the highway (slex). Not bad but it could be better considering that it only runs on a 1.8 power plant. This I think is the culprit for the fuel consumption. Notice that the Cruze is a bit on the heavy size due to its size. The 1.8 engine therefore has a hard time from 0 to 40 kph. A 2.0 liter engine would be the perfect mate for its body so that power to weight ratio will not be a big factor. I had the same experience with my 2.0 liter Camry, which would have been more fuel efficient if it was mated to a 2.4 engine at the very least. It is a basic rule that a small car with a big engine is more fuel efficient than a big car with a small engine. The tone of the 1.8 actually tells you that it is having hard time moving from 0. Since it was not advertised as a speed demon like the Impreza, I cannot complain. The 2.0 liter option should still be provided though.
Ride Comfort: This is where the Cruze shines. I am actually contemplating on replacing the 17 wheels with 18s and I do not think ride quality will be sacrificed. The size, weight, and wide wheelbase contribute to this. Replacing the Kumho tires with betters ones such as Toyo might also reduce road noise.
Handling: The handling is likewise superb. The Traction and Stability controls come in handy when you are driving 60 to 70 kms per hour and decide that you suddenly need to turn. It’s like driving on rails. The steering is likewise very responsive. Not too hard and not too soft. My complaint is actually minor. I would have preferred the use of smoother leather on the steering wheel. The turning radius is also very helpful especially when parking and manoeuvring in tight corners.
More to come.
