Part 2 of the Cruze Review

Fuel Efficiency: I use the high octane variety (Blaze and Velocity) whenever possible. The Cruze consumes 7 to 8 kilometers per liter for city driving (Makati-sucat). It gulps 9 to 11 kilometers per liter on the highway (slex). Not bad but it could be better considering that it only runs on a 1.8 power plant. This I think is the culprit for the fuel consumption. Notice that the Cruze is a bit on the heavy size due to its size. The 1.8 engine therefore has a hard time from 0 to 40 kph. A 2.0 liter engine would be the perfect mate for its body so that power to weight ratio will not be a big factor. I had the same experience with my 2.0 liter Camry, which would have been more fuel efficient if it was mated to a 2.4 engine at the very least. It is a basic rule that a small car with a big engine is more fuel efficient than a big car with a small engine. The tone of the 1.8 actually tells you that it is having hard time moving from 0. Since it was not advertised as a speed demon like the Impreza, I cannot complain. The 2.0 liter option should still be provided though.

Ride Comfort: This is where the Cruze shines. I am actually contemplating on replacing the 17 wheels with 18s and I do not think ride quality will be sacrificed. The size, weight, and wide wheelbase contribute to this. Replacing the Kumho tires with betters ones such as Toyo might also reduce road noise.

Handling: The handling is likewise superb. The Traction and Stability controls come in handy when you are driving 60 to 70 kms per hour and decide that you suddenly need to turn. It’s like driving on rails. The steering is likewise very responsive. Not too hard and not too soft. My complaint is actually minor. I would have preferred the use of smoother leather on the steering wheel. The turning radius is also very helpful especially when parking and manoeuvring in tight corners.

    More to come.

what the hell.

Let's close this case. ;)

As for FC, my first tank yielded a disappointing 4.5km/litre. I was shocked, but I later realized that I made the mistake of loading up on Shell V-Power na hindi out of town trip. May free P300 voucher kasi sa Shell, so nag load up ako sa V-Power. V-Power is da best for those long trips and highways speeds. Pero it seems to give the worst economy among the high-octane variants (Caltex Gold, Petron XCS and Blaze) pag plain old city driving. Parang mabilis nag-eevaporate yung V-Power.

I loaded up with XCS in the second tank. Based on initial findings, mukhang lalagpas akong ng 6km/litre this time. . .
4.5-6km/L? wow...so much for the "ecotec" engine badge. parang hindi na natuto ang mga american cars tsk tsk tsk. O well, sana mag-improve pa ang fc mo as the mileage racks up.

That's really very low, unless you're taking super short trips everytime.

Got 8KM/L the first time on my FD.

Sana um-ok nga. Some of the japanese brands around here around here are getting a little too comfortable with their market share.

The new generation ECOTEC engines now have modern features like variable valve timing.
As for poor FC, thats the poorest I've heard so far, something might be wrong with your car. I've heard of some reviews saying the Cruze has decent/average FC for its weight. At 1315kg, a Cruze isn't exactly a light car.
Motioncars tested the 1.8 A/T model and they averaged 8.36 km/L.

PS: For those wondering "ECOTEC" means "Emissions Control Optimisation TEChnology"

Maybe, but aren't modern engines already broken in or partially broken in at the factory?

*moipogi, about the octane rating, the recommended fuel for the Chevrolet Cruze's 1.8 ECOTEC is 93 octane unleaded.
Using high octane fuel like Shell's 97 octane V-Power will not necessarily improve the fuel economy or performance of your Cruze because its engine was not really designed for this kind of fuel.

For example some cars like the Ferrari F430, BMW M3, Honda S2000 or Civic Type-R use high octane fuel because thats what their high-performance high compression engines need.

PS:It takes more energy to ignite high octane fuel.

Not sure bro..

Pero kailangan tuloy ang break in until 1000 KMS. Tapos change oil. Lahat ng cars namin during break in period walang ginawa kundi humataw. Lahat sila maganda ang FC at power.

Hinataw ko din yung altis ko during break-in this year hehehe ganda ng FC . Sa mga cruze owners ihataw nyo during break in baka sakaling gumanda ang FC, suggestion lang . Though may nabasa nga ako na modern cars are usually broken-in to some extent sa factory.

I just had the part upgrade from my dealer. True enough it was the quick-release connector. They gave me a car care set as a gift and had me fill out a survey form from Chevy Philippines. I also had a window visor installed.

To: resident evil; moipogi; and everyone else who owns a cruze, Have you gotten a call from your dealer regarding a part upgrade as well?

I got the part "upgrade" as well and the gift. My Cruze is now at 3.3k kilometers. Fuel mileage is improving a bit but hardly noticeable. I just noticed that pulling power from 0 improved.

Does anyone know when, if ever, they are going to bring in the 2.0 liter variants? I'm thinking of trading in the 1.8.

To those who have posted their FC: Is that your ACTUAL consumption? Or did you base it on the onboard fuel consumption meter?

I'm asking because my actual FC on my LS 1.8 AT is 15 km/L (highway) and 7 km/L (around town). I've consumed a total of three tankfuls and driven 1,600 kms. So that's an average FC of about 8.8 km/L.

The onboard FC meter does not reflect the actual consumption. It gives out a higher consumption, something like 11 km/L and 6 km/L, for highway and city, respectively.

My actual FC is a little more than 9Km/L. Mixed extra-urban and Highway. 2K+ on my ODO.
