    I have been in your shoes. I used to work in Germany for a year. I did save a lot of money but the homesick is a real killer. I never thought I will be home sick but I did. It is almost impossible to escape. If you are moving to Germany, I hope you have some German language skills. Though most young adults can speak the English language natively, German is obviously widely used. What kept me sane are the travels around the area. But, Europe is boring to tell you the truth. Almost everything is closed on sundays. Shops closes early everyday. I went back to PH because I was homesick and because I found a good paying job. There are a lot of pluses though, career advancement, cultural experiences, etc. 3 years is long though. Some can leave everything behind but to be honest, if you can get a good paying job in the Philippines, nothing beats being home. When I went back, I did not care if traffic was hell here compared to German efficiency. Nothing can replace home

    You'll learn to be a better person for your family when you get there. If you are indeed thinking of the old folks, take care of yourself cause you're the only unica ija in their minds.. Who will take care of you when they're gone?

    Zero on the language I agree that Europe is boring. That is why I am also hesitant to stay there for 2 to 3 yrs because I have no friends, family and I don't understand or speak the language. I will be the only Filipino in HQ I can't spend all my weekends travelling alone since it will be too expensive and the migrant situation scares me. So I am thinking I need to make my flat my sanctuary (and that will cost me money)

    When it comes to work, relationships are important to me above anything else. I could deal with low pay as long as I am happy in the workplace. Although it would be nice to earn more, I would not leave the PH if only to earn more since I can always adjust my lifestyle. I just want to experience working in HQ and getting training from my boss (because he is the best ) I also can't wait to see the look on the face of my local boss and colleagues that I hate so much when they find out that I will be assigned to HQ and they know I can make their lives a living hell So my boss in HQ said konting tiis na lang and I will have my revenge

    Where did you stay in DE pala?

    you must be very good at what you do; if not, they would not waste their time, and effort, to move the heaven, to shake the earth, for you to get a crack at it. you take it. you do yourself a favor.
    it's the road less traveled by...

    The Road Not Taken
    By Robert Frost

    Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
    And sorry I could not travel both
    And be one traveler, long I stood
    And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

    Then took the other, as just as fair,
    And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
    Though as for that the passing there
    Had worn them really about the same,

    And both that morning equally lay
    In leaves no step had trodden black.
    Oh, I kept the first for another day!
    Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
    I doubted if I should ever come back.

    I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
    Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
    I took the one less traveled by,
    And that has made all the difference.

    For one to get his/dream come true, one must wake up and do something to make it happen. One has to get out of their comfort zone. Take the opportunity, not everybody have it

    If I stay, 2018 would be my earliest chance for promotion. And of course I have to work with people I hate (90% of them) No management support and no increase til 2018 most likely.
    Meaning this did not cross your mind before. If you decline now, for the rest of your life, puro "what if" ang magiging laman ng isip mo. Goodluck to whatever you decide, I respect you whatever it is.

    I will not decline naman. Ang issue ko lang yun length of stay. And the people I hate are here in Manila kaya I asked to be assigned abroad.

    So have you made up your mind? How much time do you have to decide? You know the paper works would be tremendous with HR and tax asking you for details on the expat assignment. You need to work on your L1 visa and your tax equalization information. Good luck!

    Yeah I have no plans of declining naman my only issue is whether to ask for a shorter stay. HQ is still working on my assignment, confidential siya, magulo kasi ngayon organization namin since net loss na kami and people are getting retrenched.

    Seriously Cathy I cant see the point why your company is working on an expat package while downsizing. Red means cut the fat and definitely expats are one of the chunks. Unless they are replacing 2 expats in the PH with 1 expat (at half the price) in Germany, you are really getting a good concesion. It is your chance to get ride of those loud chattery officemates and the toxic environment in the office. Grab the chance, start a new role and give it all you have. After the assignment, a promotion is definitely waiting for you when you come home.

    That's why I owe my bosses in HQ a lot kasi pinaglalaban nila yung assignment ko. And I don't expect a good package (eg trips back to MNL) because I know the situation. They just want me out of Manila lang talaga bec they are also aware of how unhappy I am here.

    Train travel takes most of your weekend than the event you want to take. Take Ryanair, it is inexpensive, fast and safe. You be surprised how many friends you make there. Stay away from French people, they are the most arrogant and unfriendly.

    I hate air travel kasi It's easier to go to a train station. I have experienced rudeness from French ticketing personnel (metro tickets) I tried my best to speak their language naman. But the people were generally nice to me.

    You should be asking for housing and clothing allowance.
