Just spray Quick Detailer on the surface to be clayed. Then slide the clay bar across the surface repeatedly until it feels as smooth as glass. The surface should always be lubricated during claying. If you don't have QD, you can mix water and car shampoo in a spray bottle, and use that as lubricant. You can clay painted surfaces and also glass. There are good videos from Meguiar's and Chemical Guys that you can find in YouTube.
For water etching (in surface), you need to use liquid polish. Only water mineral deposits (on surface) can be removed by claying.
